Randa Markos

Randa Markos, who entered the UFC in 2014 is no longer a member of the UFC’s roster.

Markos fought out her UFC contract back in October as she beat Livia Renato Souza by decision. The victory snapped her four-fight losing streak, but she is just 11-11-1 as a pro, so the UFC decided not to renew her contract making her a free agent.

Now, after the news came out the Randa Markos is not a member of the UFC’s roster anymore, she took to social media to release a statement on it. She also confirmed she would not be retiring and wants to continue fighting.

“It’s been a long journey. 18 fights with the UFC. Never turning down a fight, constantly active from day one. I am blessed to have had the opportunities I’ve worked hard to achieve. Although my contract is up with the UFC, fighting is in my blood. I don’t think I can ever just walk away from my passion. One chapter has ended on to the next. Thank you everyone that has helped me along the way. Thank you to all my amazing fans and thank you God. Excited and ready for what’s yet to come,” Markos wrote on Instagram.

Markos went 7-10-1 inside the Octagon and for years she alternated wins and losses with a draw mixed between. She had fought the who’s who of the strawweight division but came up short against the likes of Claudia Gadelha, Amanda Ribas, Mackenzie Dern, and Alexa Grasso. However, she does hold notable wins over Carla Esparza, Angela Hill, and Ashley Yoder as well as a draw against Marina Rodriguez.

Where Markos will fight next is uncertain. Neither Bellator nor PFL has a women’s strawweight division, but she could possibly move up to flyweight. Or, the Canadian could look to fight locally in Canada or overseas, regardless, the UFC veteran will likely have options for her next fight.

Where do you think Randa Markos will fight next?

Luana Pinheiro

For the first time since her controversial victory over Randa Markos, Luana Pinheiro has spoken out.

Pinheiro made her UFC debut this past weekend after her first round knockout of Stephanie Frausto on the Contender Series earned her a contract. While her performance on the show had many fans excited to see her in the octagon, her first fight in the UFC didn’t exactly go as planned.

Headlining the preliminary card against Markos, Pinheiro got off to a strong start, using her judo background to land a number of high impact throws. However, in the final minute of the first round, a scramble led to Markos landing an inadvertent and illegal upkick.

The commentary team, most notably UFC lightweight Paul Felder, were quick to downplay the severity of the blow and even suggested on-air that Pinheiro was exaggerating the effects of the shot. However, Pinheiro lay on the ground for several minutes and the cage-side physician eventually ruled her unable to continue. After the fight, Markos and her team said that they too believe Pinheiro oversold her injury in order to get the disqualification win.

Pinheiro has since taken to Instagram to address her DQ victory. While she says that the fight didn’t go the way she had planned, she didn’t bring up any of Markos’ statements.

“Hey guys!!! I’m passing by to first say I’m fine!”, Pinheiro wrote. “Secondly, I want to thank everyone for their support, both before and after the fight. I want to thank all my team who worked so hard with me to get to our best version for this fight.”

“No one wanted this victory more than me and no one feels more than I do for the fight,” she continued. “I imagined a thousand possibilities for my arm to end up standing up and none of them was the way it ended up. But regardless of how the breakdown didn’t go how I wanted it and how I worked for it, I’m happy for all work I made to arrive well prepared for the fight. I’m going to work hard to continue to pursue my evolution and bring out the best version of myself in the upcoming challenges. Thank you for everything and let’s go, we still have a long way to go!”

While Pinheiro may not have mentioned the accusations made by Markos and the commentary team, you best believe she has heard them. She has shown she has the skills to be a force in the strawweight division, but now faces an uphill battle to get into the good graces of most fans. It will be interesting to see how she carries herself and performs going forward.

Randa Markos has spoken out for the first time since she was disqualified from her UFC Vegas 25 match-up against Luana Pinheiro.

‘The Quiet Storm’ landed an unintentional up kick that left her opponent unable to continue fighting.

Referee, Mark Smith, awarded Pinheiro with the DQ win and Markos is not happy about it.

“I’ve been in the fight game for a while now. I’ve never intentionally thrown a illegal blow. It’s a fight, shit is bound to happen,” Markos wrote on social media. “I took three eye pokes (requiring stitches and loss of vision) and never thought for a second that I wasn’t going to continue. I had such a good camp training with @travislutter, @cdpowertrain and @adams.justin1 in Texas and was ready to showcase my skills for the greatest fight promotion in the world. Yes my foot grazed her but that my opponents Inability to continue seemed a bit oversold and suspect. I let her know after the eye poke that I wasn’t leaving that cage without a win and she stole that from me.
I’m excited about whatever is next. I have a tone of heart in me that needs to be let out. Thank you to everyone that helped me with this camp. I love you all and I’ll be back soon #ufc #quietstorm #mma #easywayout #littlebitch”

Markos is currently riding a four-fight losing streak.

A submission loss to Mackenzie Dern was sandwiched between decision defeats to Kanako Murata and Amanda Ribas in 2020.

It seems unclear if Markos well get another shot at redemption in the UFC.

The 35-year-old joined the promotion in 2014 after a run on The Ultimate Fighter Season 20.

Markos has secured several big wins during her UFC run over the likes of Aisling Daly, Carla Esparza, and Angela Hill.

Luana Pinheiro has her first win under the UFC’s banner, in the form of an opening round disqualification ruling against division veteran, Randa Markos after she was struck with an illegal upkick.

In an exciting couple of exchanges in the opening round, the Brazilian landed an unintentional eye poke against Markos, which seemed to open a cut on her right eyelid. After consulting the Octagon-side physician, Markos was cleared to continue, however, she appeared to be quite cautious about returning to action as he began blinking and wiping the blood from her eye.

Scoring a judo throw on a now uber-aggressive Markos, Pinheiro landed the Iraqi born veteran on her head. Moving to her back near the centre of the Octagon, Markos threw an illegal upkick, catching Pinheiro in her face, knocking her back and eventually to the canvas.

With referee, Mark Smith calling a halt to the action, Pinheiro, who appeared to be effected significantly by the shot, asked if she had lost the fight as she lay on her back. Waving the fight off as a result, Octagon announcer, Joe Martinez confirmed the Brazilian had taken a disqualification victory.

Below, catch the highlights from Pinheiro’s disqualification victory.

Improving to 4-1 in the UFC, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Mackenzie Dern notched her second straight victory of the year – scoring an opening frame armbar win over Randa ‘Quiet Storm’ Markos. Now under the tutelage of renowned coach, Jason Parillo – Dern had reportedly spent some considerable time focusing on the stand up aspect of her skillset, however, it was her often flaunted grappling skills which led her to a triumph.

Threatening with a triangle after a slip off an attempted kick, Dern eventually transitioned to an armbar at the fence, and despite Markos’ best efforts – the strawweight staple was forced to tap midway through the opening frame. Arizona native, Dern can add the Iraqi born contender to a May kneebar win over Hannah ‘Shockwave’ Cifers.

Below, check out Dern’s quickfire armbar victory over Markos.
