It looks like the UFC is targeting former featherweight champion Jose Aldo’s return for their UFC on ESPN+ 2 card.

MMA Junkie is reporting that the promotion is working on a fight between Aldo and top-ranked Renato Moicano for the Brazil event. The show goes down from the Centro de Formacao Olimpica do Nordeste in Fortaleza, Brazil on February 2, 2019.

Aldo has only lost to two men in his UFC career, those being Max Holloway (twice) and Conor McGregor. Following back-to-back losses to “Blessed,” Aldo bounced back for his first victory since July of 2016 earlier this summer. He defeated Jeremy Stephens via first-round TKO. The Brazilian is winding down in his MMA career after having competed since 2004. He’d like to make one more title run before hanging his gloves up for good.

As for Moicano, he is making a lot of noise in the featherweight division as of late. Following his first career loss to Brian Ortega in July of last year, Moicano has picked up back-to-back wins. He recently submitted longtime UFC veteran Cub Swanson in August in the first round. Now, he’ll likely be sharing the cage with his fellow countryman in Aldo, who will undoubtedly be the toughest test of his career.

Recently, Moicano was booked to be the backup for this past weekend’s featherweight title fight between Max Holloway and Brian Ortega. However, Moicano missed weight the day before fight night. Thankfully, both Ortega and Holloway were fit to compete and Moicano’s services were not needed. Hopefully he can solve whatever weight cutting issues he had for his bout against Aldo.

The alternate fighter that was supposed to be the backup plans should the main event of Max Holloway vs. Brian Ortega not take place has missed weight. Just last month, it was revealed that ising featherweight prospect Renato Moicano would be the backup fighter in case one of these stars missed weight.

Holloway is slated to defend his UFC featherweight title against Orega in the headliner of the UFC 231 pay-per-view event. Holloway has had issues making it to the cage as of late. It all started when he was originally set to challenge for the lightweight title at UFC 223 in April. Then, Holloway was removed from his initially scheduled fight with Ortega at UFC 226 due to concussion-like symptoms.

UFC officials held the weigh-ins for this event on Friday morning and Moicano missed weight. Keep in mind that his only job this week was to make weight and he would be paid for his efforts. He weighed in at 146 pounds, which is over the championship limit.

This is where it could’ve been interesting. He won’t attempt to cut the extra pound. So hypothetically if he had to step into the main event, Moicano would not be eligible to win the title. Also, Moicano was cleared by a doctor to continue cutting weight. But with the main event fighters making weight, he decided to call it at 146 lbs.

The Brazilian was initially set to compete on the card against Mirsad Bektic but Bektic was forced to withdraw from the fight. It led to him being left without an opponent and the promotion made the call to put him in this spot.

Artem Lobov Calls Out Renato Moicano, Will Donate Half Of Purse To Charity

Artem Lobov calls for a fight with rising UFC featherweight title hopefull Renato Moicano, and is willing to give half his fight purse to charity.

Its been a rough go of things inside the Octagon for Artem Lobov as of late.

However, “The Russian Hammer” isn’t letting that affect his confidence.

Lobov recently took to Twitter to call out rising UFC featherweight prospect Renato Moicano. Lobov even offered to donate half of his UFC fight purse to charity if given the opportunity against the Brazilian:

“Let me fight Moicano if no1 gets injured  ,I am 1 of the few to never turn down fights and 1 of even fewer to never pull out, this is the Ultimate Fighting not Ultimate stand by to fight,so lets make Moicano fight!!”

“Still here, still ready to go!! I’ll donate half my purse to childrens charity, in case you needed another reason  . Where are the Fertittas when you need them, they always respected and rewarded the true fighter!!”

Lobov calling out Moicano is certainly an interesting move from the SBG Ireland product. He is currently 2-5 inside the Octagon and has an overall losing record of 13-15-1 in mixed martial arts (MMA). He has decided to call out Moicano, who is on a two-fight win streak since suffering the only loss of his MMA career to Brian Ortega in summer of 2017.

Moicano will serve as the standby fighter in case things go wrong for either Max Holloway or Brian Ortega at UFC 231 this weekend (Sat. December 8, 2018). If either Ortega or Holloway is forced off the card, Moicano could be challenging for a UFC title.
