Nick Diaz admitted to having some nerves heading into his first fight against Robbie Lawler.

Diaz and Lawler first met all the way back at UFC 47 in 2004. Back then, both men were still carving out their place in the sport, with the 22-year-old Lawler viewed as a knockout specialist, while the 20-year-old Diaz was considered a jiu-jitsu practitioner with some decent boxing. However, it would be Diaz who would show off the more impressive stand-up up game one his way to a second-round stoppage victory.

Now grizzled veterans, the two men will run it back more than 17 years and 200 UFC events later. They meet on the main card of UFC 266 in a 5-round affair. It is only the second non-championship, non-main event fight the UFC has scheduled for 5 rounds, with the first being between Nick’s brother, Nate Diaz, and Leon Edwards.

Reflecting back on their UFC 47 fight as part of UFC 266 Countdown, Diaz said that the reputation Lawler had gained as a power-puncher and the narrative that he was going to run through the Stockton native got in his head a bit, and Diaz knew he would have to change things up (h/t Sportskeeda).

“So the thing is with Robbie (Lawler) that kind of freaked me out was that he knocked out Steve Berger, Tiki Ghosn… He knocked these guys out, man,” Diaz said. “It was like…there was no way I was going to win and everyone was like ‘oh, you’re fighting Robbie Lawler?’ So when I went out there, I just did what I knew and I spooked him.”

While Diaz was willing to admit Lawler has grown substantially as a fighter in the nearly two decades since, he also feels that he himself has done even more growing. He believes that the improvements he has made will guide him to yet another victory over ‘Ruthless’.

“I’m actually way more of a dangerous fighter than I was when I fought Robbie Lawler for the first time,” Diaz continued. “I’m going to be really unstoppable having made the right decisions… I’m going to beat Robbie again.”

The countdown to UFC 266 has officially begun.

This Saturday, UFC 266 will take place from The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. There will be three five-round bouts on the card, including two world title fights and the return of the enigmatic Nick Diaz.

In the main event, Brian Ortega will have his second career opportunity at UFC featherweight gold when he challenges #4-ranked pound-for-pound fighter, Alexander Volkanovski. Ortega truly shined in his most recent performance against The Korean Zombie, but now he must put his best foot forward once again, this time against the best of the best at 145.

The co-main event will feature Valentina Shevchenko looking to make her sixth successful flyweight title defense when she locks up with veteran Lauren Murphy. Will Murphy be able to defy the massive odds placed against her and be the one to dethrone the seemingly unstoppable Bullet?

And in the third five-round showcase, Nick Diaz will return after six years away from competition when he duels with familiar foe Robbie Lawler. Way back in 2004, Diaz defeated Lawler via KO. Does Diaz still pack the same wallop nearly two decades later? And how well prepared is Diaz ahead of his big comeback fight?

To help answer that final question, you can check out the official UFC 266 Countdown video at the bottom of this article. But first, let’s look at the fully stacked lineup on hand this Saturday night!

Robbie Lawler is not thinking about retirement whatsoever.

The former welterweight champion returns to action next week at UFC 266 when he takes on the returning Nick Diaz in a five-round welterweight contest.

Some observers have suggested it could be the last time we see Lawler in the Octagon, especially as he is currently on a four-fight losing streak.

However, that’s not the case for “Ruthless” who ruled out that this was his final farewell.

“Nah, it’s not possible,” Lawler told TMZ (via BJ Penn). “I’ve been doing this a long time, my body feels good. It’s just waiting for good fights that get me excited, and this is one of those fights.

“”Nick Diaz is a big name and this is going to be a big event.””

For that matter, Lawler is not thinking about retirement at all either as he still feels good competing — even as former rival Carlos Condit called time on his career just a few days ago.

“I have no idea (when I will retire). As long as my body feels good and I’m still loving what I’m doing and I can still get in there and train with these guys and hold my own, and I’m enjoying what I’m doing,” he added. “If all those things are clicking, then I’m going to be doing it.

“But you never know, things change fast. But I feel good. My body feels good, my mind’s good, so I’m going to keep going.”

Following Saturday’s UFC 195 main event for the UFC Welterweight Championship between Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit, Joe Rogan took to social media to rant about the problems with the scoring system in MMA and how it may have cost “The Natural Born Killer” the 170-pound title this weekend.

Rogan, who has been calling last night’s Lawler-Condit title fight one of the best in history since the horn sounded to end the crazy fifth round, explains why the current system in place for scoring fights in MMA is “inexcusable.”

With the old school 10-point must system still in place for MMA, Lawler went on to retain his title after five epic rounds of action with Condit, as a split decision went his way with official scores of 48-47, 47-48, 48-47. You can check out the complete results of last night’s pay-per-view here: UFC 195 Results – Lawler vs. Condit.

Additionally, the longtime UFC commentator tells fans what they can do to help facilitate change. Rogan posted the following:

Condit defeated Nick Diaz by decision back at UFC 143 in February of 2012.
