If you’re a fan of professional wrestling, you likely recognized Colby Covington’s walkout song over the weekend.

“Chaos” walked out to WWE Hall Of Famer Kurt Angle’s longtime theme, as chants of “You Suck,” the same chants fans across the world chanted at Angle over the years, rang throughout the Prudential Center. Covington would eventually leave Newark with a lopsided unanimous decision win over former UFC welterweight king Robbie Lawler.

Now, he’s expected to challenge Kamaru Usman for the 170-pound strap next. Unfortunately, an injury to his eye could delay the contest. Despite that, speaking on “The Ariel Helwani MMA Show” this week, Covington opened up a bit more about walking out to Kurt Angle’s WWE theme.

Covington noted he got his American Top Team (ATT) teammate and WWE star Bobby Lashley to get Angle’s blessing for Covington to use the theme. He also teased a meeting with professional wrestling billionaire tycoon Vince McMahon, revealing his aspirations to become a simultaneous UFC and WWE champion.

“Absolutely man, that was the greatest walkout in the history of this sport, second to none,” Covington said. “The energy and the electricity going through the arena when I walked out to that song was just amazing. And I got to give a big shout out to Kurt Angle, for giving me the blessing to be able to use that song, was so generous of him.

“I’m very thankful to him. And also to Bobby Lashley for asking Kurt Angle if I could have the blessing to use his song. So big thank you to those guys, and Vince McMahon I’m going to see you soon man. I’m getting that WWE belt and I’m going to have this UFC belt. I’m going to be a two-sport World Champion.”

Brock Lesnar is the only ever athlete who has bounced back-and-forth from WWE and the UFC while working for both companies at the same time. However, Lesnar has never held both a WWE and UFC title simultaneously. Covington has yet to sit down with UFC brass to determine if he’d be allowed to cross over but believes the Las Vegas-based promotion recognizes good business when they see it.

“We haven’t had that sit down talk yet, but I think they’re gonna realize it’s good for business,” Covington said. “To be able to cross over and go back-and-forth. I mean, Brock Lesnar did it, so why can’t I do it?”

As for the Kurt Angle theme, Covington confirmed it will be his new regular walkout song in the UFC moving forward.

“Nah, that’s going to be my new song,” Covington admitted. “Everybody knows I’m the most handyman in all of sports. I mean, it’s just so fitting for me, you know? Just hearing the crowd yell, “You suck! You suck!” There’s nothing more American than that. And what I represent, you know, being a Trump supporter, everybody hates us. Everybody hates a winner. So I’m going to give them what they want.”

Colby Covington put on a tremendous performance this past weekend in Newark. “Chaos” outclassed Robbie Lawler with such relative ease, even his adversaries had to give him props.

However, Covington had a minor setback heading into the contest. Covington revealed he suffered a nasty cut above his eye prior to the fight, which almost forced him to pull from the bout. Luckily, Covington was able to stitch it up and cover the cut with makeup so the athletic commission wouldn’t pull him from the fight.

Speaking on “The Ariel Helwani MMA Show” today (Mon. August 5, 2019), Covington detailed how the cut happened. Covington revealed he suffered the laceration due to an accidental head-butt during a sparring session.

“Yeah, when I was training, a little boxing sparring, we were just doing some body sparring that day,” Covington said. “I didn’t wear headgear, it was stupid. The guy leaped in and he head-butted me – it was nasty man. I honestly wanted to pull out, I was getting negative thoughts. I was like, ‘Yeah man, I got to pull out.’

“And then, the worst part is like, it was three weeks before the fight so we still had a manageable time to get it healthy, but we do stitches and they mess up the stitch job. They did them really loose, they didn’t do them tight, they didn’t do them from the muscle to the skin.

“So they were really loose and there was still a big gash in it, but it didn’t matter man, nothing was going to stop me from getting my hand raised and going out there. It didn’t matter if I was fighting King Kong that night. I was gonna put on a show for the President and the first family sitting front row.”

Covington noted that he might need some “pretty serious” surgery for the cut. It could sideline him anywhere from a couple of weeks to one or two months.

“Yeah, I honestly, I really do think I need to get it re-stitched,” Covington said. “And they’re going to have to do a pretty serious surgery where they have to cut back open the eyelid, and they’re going to have to stitch the muscle to the skin. I could be out for a couple of weeks, maybe a month or two.

“That’s why December in Vegas might work out better. So we’ll see when I get back to Florida next week. I talked to Dan Lambert, I go to the doctor and see. I don’t want this nasty gash that I have right now that covers my whole eyelid, I don’t want to have to fight with that like that the rest of my career because it’s going to get opened easy and I don’t want to risk taking a loss in a fight because of a doctor stoppage.

“That would be the worst way to lose. So I want to make sure my body is healthy, my face I completely healed, we get this stitched properly, and then we’ll be ready to go.”

Colby Covington impressed many people with his recent performance — so much so that even bitter rival Tyron Woodley couldn’t hate on him.

Covington made it seven wins in a row when he dominated Robbie Lawler over five rounds in their UFC Newark headliner this past weekend. It now puts “Chaos” in a position to challenge Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title next.

And Woodley seemed to be impressed by what he called a “great performance” from his former teammate:

“The actual performance, he had a great performance,” Woodley said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday. “He put a lot of pressure on Robbie, very good gameplan to press Robbie like that and really deflate him. Some people don’t realize how exhausting wrestling can be. And yeah, he [Lawler] may not have gotten taken down in the 18 or 19 tries he [Covington] attempted but to fight the takedown, to get the underhooks and defend, push him away, to really be hesitant to let your hands go because he might get underneath you and the unrelenting pressure he put on him — it was impressive.

I can’t hate on him and act like he didn’t put on a performance. He may not have the most power but you can’t really fault somebody for something they weren’t born with. So he has to throw 600 punches. 600 punches may equal 60 of Robbie’s punches. He kept himself out of harm’s way, he kept mixing it up…it looked like a drill match to be honest. He had a good performance. I think Robbie kind of lost focus in the fight.”

So given his performance over the weekend, who does Woodley think will come out on top between Covington and Usman?

“Very tough, I can’t say one thing,” Woodley explained. “It’s any man’s fight. Neither one of them is known for their punching power. Usman will have a little bit more power, a little bit more relaxation and flow. They both have very strong minds, I don’t think anyone’s going to break in this fight. I don’t know exactly how Usman deals with somebody rattling him…I’m interested to see how he responds to it.”

Woodley Return?

As for Woodley, he could return this year provided it’s the right fight for him. Lawler and Rafael dos Anjos are names he is interested in facing, but if it makes sense for him to wait for the winner of the next title fight, that’s what he’ll do:

I will return later this year for sure,” Woodley added. “…We’ll see. …Physically, I’ll be prepared to fight this year. If it comes down to a point where it makes more sense for me to sit back and spectate and pick up the winner of this next fight [Usman vs. Covington], obviously that’s going to make the most sense.”

Who do you want to see Woodley face next?
