Robert Whittaker Discusses Mistake Of Fighters Getting Title Shots After Missing Weight

Whittaker has discussed why the UFC giving fighters title shots after missing weight is a mistake.

Robert Whittaker discusses why the UFC is making a mistake by giving fighters who miss weight title shots as he believes that shouldn’t be the case. If you recall, Whittaker won the interim title when he beat Yoel Romero back at UFC 213 in July of 2017 by unanimous decision. He was later crowned the champion after Georges St-Pierre vacated it.

Next Fight

The UFC has already announced that once Whittaker is healthy enough to fight again, he will make his next title defense against top contender Kelvin Gastelum.

Robert Whittaker Discusses

Whittaker recently sounded off on why the promotion should stop giving fighters title shots who miss weight. Keep in mind that although the champ has never missed weight, he did fight someone who did. Romero missed weight for their fight at UFC 225.

“It’s like me going down to bantamweight, not making weight, winning because I’m much bigger and then getting a title shot,” said Whittaker via MMA Fighting. It’s not fair. It’s not fair. Because on the flip side, the guys that are making weight don’t make it easy. It wasn’t easy to cut weight and make weight and do the job. We still had to struggle, we still had to diet weeks out. We’re just more professional at it. We just did it right.”

Reality

“The people who do make weight are also in a hard position,” Whittaker said. “Because they’re in a position where they still need to make money to pay the bills, to earn a wage, to do their job. But they also have the support of hundreds of thousands of people who have come to see them fight or that are watching them on TV to watch a fight. The fans. That’s kind of why you fight — they drive the sport,” he added.

“When you ask a guy, ‘Are you gonna take a fight if your opponent doesn’t make weight?’ Is it really asking? Does he really have a choice? When you back them into a corner like that, is there really a choice to be made? You have to look at the whole process behind it. It’s a very funny topic, missing weight and getting title shots,” Whittaker said. “I think the punishments should be more severe, but I don’t know.”

Whittaker will also coach the upcoming The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 28 opposite of Gastelum prior to them fighting for the strap.

Video: ‘TUF 28’ Coach Robert Whittaker Planning Return To The Octagon

Middleweight champ Robert Whittaker is hoping to return to the octagon sooner than expected.

‘TUF 28’ coach Robert Whittaker is planning a return to the octagon in early 2019.

Whittaker has traveled one hell of an injury road in his short tenure as middleweight champion. In his most recent title defense at UFC 225 against Yoel Romero, the champ badly injured both of his hands and tweaked his knee. Surgery was needed to rebuild one of Whittaker’s hands and the other required months of painstaking rehab.

Things, however, appear to be looking up for the Aussie who is coaching opposite Kelvin Gastelum on the final season of The Ultimate Fighter premiering this Wednesday (Aug 29, 2018) on FS1. “TUF 28” Heavy-Hitters will feature both heavyweight and women’s featherweight divisions.

A fitting send-off for the reality show perhaps. Both Whittaker and Gastelum navigated the drama of the TUF house and prevailed. Both men now return as coaches.

Speaking to media members in Los Angeles yesterday (Aug 27, 2018) Whittaker articulated that even though his pending title fight against Gastelum doesn’t have a set date or time, he hopes it to be the early part of 2019.

Regardless of lack of venue or outcome of the show, Whittaker and Gastelum are going to fight for the strap. If the Aussie has it his way it will be sooner rather than later.

Yoel Romero Says He’ll ‘Start Charging USADA Rent’

Yoel Romero says USADA might as well move in with him.

The hulking top-ranked UFC middleweight recently shared a photograph of his latest USADA drug test. “The Soldier of God” doesn’t appear too pleased with the frequency they’re testing him at.

Romero posted on his Instagram that they had visited him twice in this month alone. He then joked he would “start charging them rent” because of that frequency:

“2 times in the month #iluhju usada. Soon I will start charging rent and you can just stay with me in my house ? #seeyousoonboi”

Romero recently saw his supposedly confirmed fight with rising star Paulo Costa stricken off November’s UFC 230. The Cuban powerhouse said he needed more time to recover due to surgery for a broken orbital suffered in his close loss to Robert Whittaker at UFC 225.

The Olympic medalist has missed weight for his last two fights, rendering them non-title affairs because of it. He recently confirmed he would not move up to light heavyweight regardless.

As for USADA, Romero was suspended for six months due to a failed test that was ultimately deemed a contaminated supplement.

Paulo Costa Is Unimpressed With Champ Robert Whittaker

Paulo Costa is unimpressed with UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker.

Costa is in the midst of a tremendous middleweight campaign. The 27-year-old Brazilian is undefeated in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career. He currently holds a record of 12-0 and has finished all of those victories.

In his last outing, Costa defeated decorated striker Uriah Hall via knockout. He finished the former Ultimate Fighter finalist in the second round at UFC 226. Costa was awarded Performance Of The Night for his win.

After an impressive victory, Costa began campaigning for a fight with former middleweight champion Chris Weidman. Costa hopes to make a huge statement en-route to a 185-pound title opportunity.

Instead, the UFC gifted Costa with an even bigger opportunity. He will fight No. 1-ranked Yoel Romero at Madison Square Garden at UFC 230. Costa recently told MMA Junkie that he’s confident he can knock the Cuban powerhouse out:

“This is the biggest challenge of my career,” Costa said. “But every fight is the biggest challenge, so I’m very confident. I will (knock him out).”

Title Shot:

With a big win over “The Soldier Of God,” Costa feels he’ll have therefore solidified himself as the next man up for a middleweight championship opportunity:

“After (I) win this fight, I will go to the title shot,” Costa said. “I believe that.”

It goes without saying that Whittaker is an extremely gifted mixed martial artist. He has been undefeated since jumping up to 185 pounds, racking up a plethora of knockouts and eventually capturing the title.

Whittaker has defeated the likes of Uriah Hall, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and back-to-back wins over Yoel Romero. The Aussie champ will defend his title against Kelvin Gastelum after the pair coach The Ultimate Fighter 28 (TUF 28) opposite one another.

Costa doesn’t see anything special about Whittaker despite “Bobby Knuckles’” amazing track record and results inside the cage. In fact, he calls a potential bout against Whittaker “a regular fight”:

“He’s a regular fight, for me,” Costa said. “He’s not so good in the standup, or wrestling, or jiu-jitsu, he’s a regular fight, you know?”
