UFC flyweight Rogério Bontorin’s time fighting in the Octagon has come to an abrupt conclusion as the promotion has reportedly released him. Bontorin was slated to face up-and-coming flyweight contender Manel Kape at UFC 275. But he badly missed weight and was transported to the hospital, forcing the promotion to cancel the fight.
Bontorin is now planning on a move to bantamweight for his next MMA venture.
Bontorin earned a shot in the UFC following a stint on Dana White’s Contender Series. He earned a standing rear-naked choke submission in Round 2 against Gustavo Gabriel.
Bontorin would go on to earn wins over the likes of Matt Schnell and Raulian Paiva during his time in the UFC. Before getting a shot in the UFC, he enjoyed brief stints in Imortal FC and Brave CF.
Bontorin tested positive for a performance enhancer last June but it was later determined that it was due to a tainted supplement. He served a reduced suspension and later fought against Brandon Royval back in January.
Bontorin will look to revive his career at bantamweight and potentially sign with another top promotion later this year.
Are you surprised that the UFC opted to release Rogério Bontorin?

This weekend’s anticipated flyweight pairing between division contenders, Rogerio Bontorin and Manel Kape has been removed from the UFC 275 main card in Singapore – with the former requiring hospitalization due to the effects of weight cutting.
Rogerio Bontorin, the current #8 ranked flyweight contender, is without a victory in his last four Octagon appearances, most recently suffering a January split decision defeat against Brandon Royval.
As for Kape, the former Rizin FF champion managed to land the #14 rank in the division back in December with a one-sided first round knockout win against Zhalgas Zhumagulov.
Rogerio Bontorin requires hospitalization due to the effects of weight cutting
Per an initial report from EurosportNL reporter, Marcel Dorff, Bontorin required hospitalization ahead of his scheduled weigh-in for his bout against Kape at the Singapore Indoor Arena.
“Just got told Rogerio Bontorin was transported to the hospital earlier this morning. With Bontorin vs. Kape missing on the PPV card visual during the Road to the UFC broadcast it looks like the fight is off #UFC275 tomorrow….”
As a result, UFC 275 is now-scheduled to continue with a total 11 bouts. The event is scheduled to feature a pair of undisputed championship fights, including a light heavyweight bout between Glover Teixeira, and Jiri Prochazka.
Valentina Shevchenko also features in a co-headlining slot against Taila Santos for the undisputed flyweight title.
Another main card attraction comes in the form of a strawweight title-eliminator rematch between former division champions, Zhang Weili, and Joanna Jedrzejczyk – in a re-run of their March 2020 Fight of the Year.
At the time of publication, it is currently unknown which bout will take place on the main card in place of Bontorin vs. Kape – and it is also unknown if the flyweight matchup between the two will be revisited in the future.

UFC 275 has lost a bout late in the day, with the main card clash between Rogério Bontorin and Manel Kape scrapped just a day before the pay-per-view.
#8-ranked flyweight Bontorin was looking to get back on track in Singapore at the expense of former Rizin champion Kape, whose two-fight win streak has seen him climb to #14 on the 125-pound ladder.
But ahead of the event’s weigh-ins, rumors began circulating that the fight may have been canceled, with the latest episode of Road To UFC displaying a four-fight main card, the absent pairing being that of the flyweights.
After reports emerged that the Brazilian had been taken to hospital early Friday morning, MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn received confirmation from a UFC official that the fight is indeed off the card, with Bontorin suffering from “weight management issues.”
Bontorin has previously missed weight once in his six-fight UFC career, tipping the scales at 137 pounds ahead of his bantamweight bout with Matt Schnell last May.
It’s since been confirmed that the welterweight clash between Andre Fialho and Jake Matthews, originally set to open the prelims, has been elevated to the main card.
With the cancelation of Bontorin vs. Kape, the UFC 275 fight card is as follows:
Glover Teixeira (C) vs. Ji?í Procházka (light heavyweight championship main event)
An exciting flyweight scrap between Rogério Bontorin and Manel Kape has been added to the UFC 275 pay-per-view. The event, set for June 11, is slated to go down inside the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. As well as marking the UFC’s return to the Asian nation for the first time since 2019, UFC…
Kape (17-6), a former Rizin bantamweight champion and the current #14-ranked UFC flyweight contender, has found form in the Octagon after consecutive losses to Matheus Nicolau and Alexandre Pantoja got him off to a losing start in the promotion.
Now, following memorable first-round knockouts of Ode’ Osbourne and Zhalgas Zhumagulov, the Portuguese-Angolan star is looking to continue his momentum up the 125-pound ladder.
He was initially set to have the chance to do so against Sumudaerji last month. However, the bout was scrapped after “Starboy” withdrew due to “personal reasons.” Kape later revealed that he’d been flagged by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for the DHCMT Turinabol M3 metabolite. Given his quick booking, it stands to reason that he’s been cleared of any wrongdoing.
The cancelation has now turned out to be somewhat of a blessing in disguise for Kape, as he’s now set for the chance to fight even further up the ladder against the #8-ranked Bontorin (16-4). The Brazilian was originally scheduled to welcome Kape to the UFC in 2020, but that bout fell away after Bontorin suffered an ankle injury.
While “Starboy” is riding a two-fight win streak, the higher-ranked Bontorin is without a victory since 2019. As well as defeats to Ray Borg, Kai Kara-France, and Brandon Royval, the Brazilian saw a decision victory over Matt Schnell overturned after he tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide.
Kape will be looking to enter the top 10 at flyweight with an impressive display in Singapore, while Bontorin will be looking to rebound by halting the charge of the Portuguese-Angolan.
The current fights expected to take place at UFC 275 are as follows:
Glover Teixeira (C) vs. Ji?í Procházka (light heavyweight championship main event)

The bout was expected to be a fun one and certainly did not disappoint. The two 125 pound contenders went back and forth for the first 10 minutes before controversy ensued late in the fight.
With the scorecards seeming to be locked up at one round apiece, Royval locked in a tight armbar in the third round. Bontorin appeared to submit, but it went unnoticed by referee Mark Smith and the fighters battled to a judge’s decision.
It ultimately proved to be irrelevant as Royval won via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28) but plenty from around the fight world chimed in on Twitter after noticing the tap on television.
Now What For Brandon Royval?
What do you think is next for Royval after this win?
With a win over Kai Kara-France and a hard fought battle with the current champion Brandon Moreno, Royval has proven to be able to hang with the elites at 125. Is he one win away from a title shot?
How about Bontorin? This marks three losses in his last four and he should expect to drop down from his current #7 spot in the rankings.
Did you think Brandon Royvalshould’ve got the submission win at UFC Vegas 46?
