UFC Fight Night 89 went down last night (June 18, 2016) live on FOX Sports 1 from Ottawa, Canada, and the event produced an exciting night of fights featuring multiple electrifying finishes.

In the co-main event of the evening, fan favorite and former lightweight title challenger Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone picked up an impressive third round finish over the larger Patrick Cote in a welterweight bout. “Cowboy” was given a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his efforts.

Earlier on the main card, Canadian Steve Bosse and Sean O’Connell went to war in a three round slug fest that saw each man battered and bloodied. Each man put it all on the line, but Bosse ended up walking away with a unanimous decision victory. Both combatants received a $50,000 “Fight of the Night” bonus for their efforts.

During the preliminary portion of the card, Krzysztof Jotko landed a brutal left hand on Tamdan McCroy that shut the lights off for McCroy in under a minute. Jotko was awarded a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his knockout.

UFC Fight Night Ottawa emanated tonight (June 18, 2016) from the TD Place Arena in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Headlined by a number one contender matchup between Canadian Rory MacDonald and Stephen Thompson, UFN 89 produced a great night of fights for the fans in attendance in the Great White North.

Unfortunately for the Canadian fans though, their top two hometown fighters did not fare well.

The main event saw a tactical chess match unfold between Thompson and MacDonald. “Wonderboy” continued to prove elusive and, with his newfound takedown defense, an exceedingly tough puzzle to solve. While the fight lacked the action that marked both fighters’ last bouts, it was a fascinating game of cat and mouse nonetheless. MacDonald attempted to pressure and close the distance, but more often than not he was met with sharp counterpunches before the South Carolinian circled away. The action picked up in the fifth and final round, but the finish that the “Red King” needed failed to materialize.

In co-main event action, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone wrecked ultra-durable and crafty Canadian veteran Patrick Cote.

Cerrone overcame his usual slow start by hitting two beautiful reactive takedowns in the first round. From there, he put on a gorgeous and violent kickboxing display, knocking Cote down in every round. The left hook was his weapon of choice, and after hurting “The Predator” with it again in the third, two piston-like right hands put his man down for good. Cerrone waltzed into mount and polished him off as his foe covered up. Cote had never before been stopped by strikes.

Here was MMA Twitter’s reaction to these two pivotal welterweight bouts:

High stakes were up for grabs when Stephen Thompson met Rory MacDonald in the main event of last night’s (Sat., June 18, 2016) UFC Fight Night 89 from the TD Place Arena in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

MMA fans everywhere were expecting the world out of “Wonderboy,” who had the momentum of two straight first round knockouts over Johny Hendricks and Jake Ellenberger. The pressure was also heavy on MacDonald’s shoulders in the UFC’s debut in Ottawa, as he was returning from the badly broken nose he suffered in his historic fifth-round loss to Robbie Lawler at UFC 189 over 11 months ago.

The headliner may not have been the all-out explosive war that fans had hoped for, but in the end, the fight ended up a technically sound, hard-fought war by both fighters, with Thompson taking home a well-deserved unanimous decision on the strength of his superior volume and activity.

After the win, Thompson called out for a title shot against the winner of Robbie Lawler vs. Tyron Woodley in the main event of July 30’s UFC 201, and with seven straight victories, it’s tough to deny him.

A highly anticipated welterweight matchup served as the main event for UFC Fight Night 89 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The two combatants were Rory MacDonald (18-4) and Stephen Thompson (13-1). Not only did the fight have title implications, but it very well could’ve been “Red King’s” final appearance inside the Octagon.

“Wonderboy” earned the win and most likely a title shot.

The first minute saw both men engaged in a feeling out process. MacDonald went for a rolling heel hook, but Thompson was able to avoid danger. “Red King” went for the heel hook again, but the result was the same. A front kick to the body landed for “Wonderboy.” An elbow in the clinch landed for MacDonald. Thompson connected with some short punches. “Red King” went high with a kick and it was blocked. The round ended shortly after.

Thompson connected with a couple of leg kicks. “Wonderboy” had his question mark kick blocked. MacDonald briefly got a hold of Thompson and landed a knee to the body. For a third time, “Red King’s” heel hook attempt was avoided. MacDonald drove in with a single leg attempt and elbowed his opponent on the break. A side kick to the body found the target for Thompson. The two exchanged kicks as the horn sounded.

A leg kick for “Wonderboy” got things underway in the third frame. MacDonald landed a right hand as his opponent moved back. “Red King” found himself on his back momentarily. Thompson landed a kick to the body, but MacDonald connected with a right hand. Thompson leaped in and landed a right hand. Three rounds were in the books and both men remained patient as the crowd became restless. Thompson proved to be the more active fighter up to this point.

Round four began and the two fighters started to open up. Thompson landed a punch off the clinch break. “Wonderboy” found some openings and attacked the head and body of his opponent. A side kick had MacDonald off balance briefly. A jab found the home for “Red King.” Thompson continued to find more openings.

A right hand landed for MacDonald in the final round. The two exchanged punches. Thompson lunged forward with a straight right. A wheel kick missed the mark for “Wonderboy.” MacDonald went for a takedown, but wound up on his back with Thompson in side control. “Red King’s” nose was a bloody mess. Thompson stunned his opponent for a moment. MacDonald tried pressing forward at the end of the fight, but the decision was obvious.

Final Result: Stephen Thompson def. Rory MacDonald via unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 48-47)
