Thus, it appears that Belfort has a comeback fight. It should be noted that the promotion has yet to confirm the bout but is expected to do so.

This news comes after earlier this week Belfort revealed that he had signed with ONE Championship now that he’s out of retirement. As of this writing, there’s no word yet on the date of his next fight.

Belfort took to his official Instagram account where he thanked Jones for accepting the fight:

“I was in the middle of ? filming for an upcoming project (which I’m excited to share with you all soon?) when I got the official response from @RoyJonesJr so I thought I would share that little moment with you all,” Belfort posted. “I am very excited for what’s to come with @OneChampionship and this upcoming fight, I’m even more excited to be the first to bring you this new way of competition, it allows for the 1st time different worlds to collide in a way that’s fair and exciting!??? Thank you accepting Roy and I am looking forward to this fight!”

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort has just signed with ONE Championship.

The 41-year-old joins other former UFC stars such as Eddie Alvarez, Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, and Sage Northcutt who recently made the jump. Speaking to media shortly after the announcement, Belfort threw out a rather interesting fight idea.

“The Phenom” said he’d like to step into the squared circle with boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. (via Boxing Scene):

“One fight that I’d really like, I told Chatri [Sityodtong] I’d really like to put on this fight, is me vs. Roy Jones Jr. So Roy, wherever you are, I want to come challenge you for a boxing match — but with this condition. I’m going to be able to dirty box with you.

“I won’t be able to kick you, but I will be able to dirty box with you. I’m going to be in your face the whole time so it’s going to be a different boxing match. So that would be a very fun thing to do.”

Recently, TMZ Sports spoke to Jones and got his reaction to the offer. He accepted Belfort’s challenge to meet him inside the ring:

“This is what I do for a living. Y’all must’ve forgot. That’s who I am. I love a battle. I love a challenge. So, if that’s what you want, that’s what you get. Ain’t like you gotta ask me twice,” Jones said.

Jones said he’d need a six week fight camp to get ready for a fight with Belfort. He added he’d need eight weeks if he wanted to showboat:

“I got nothing but the utmost respect for you. You were a helluva MMA fighter. You one of the best of all time. But, when it comes to boxing, this is what I do. I’m the ruler. I’m the king of this thing.

“Ya understand me? Since Muhammad Ali is not on Earth anymore, I don’t think there’s nothing ever on this Earth as bad as I am with these hands.”

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’ legacy has been brought into question in recent years.

Jones has had several run-ins with the law outside the Octagon, as well as the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) while in competition. However, he overcame all those obstacles to return this past weekend (Sat. December 28, 2018) at UFC 232 on pay-per-view (PPV). Jones defeated Alexander Gustafsson to win the vacant 205-pound title.

After the fight, boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. spoke to media about UFC 232. Jones Jr. was in attendance after announcing his boxing promotion will be streaming fights on UFC Fight Pass in 2019. In regards to Jones, the former cruiserweight champion said he doesn’t think anything will taint the true legacy of “Bones” (via MMAjunkie):

“Nothing will taint the true legacy of who Jon Jones is,” he said. “People always (ask), ‘You think the steroids taint their image?’

“I don’t think it taints their image, because if steroids made that much difference, anybody could be that good if they just used steroids. Everybody that does it don’t be that good. Even in the fights (Jones) passed the tests on, he was still that good.”

Prior to UFC 232, Jones found himself in another debacle with USADA. He turned in a drug test which tested positive for banned substances yet again. However, it turns out the substances were the same metabolites that Jones was suspended for last year. Jones was allowed to stay on the card, but not without issue.

UFC 232 was originally set to be held from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, due to Jones’ abnormality, the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) could not license Jones in time for the fight.

As a result, the fight was moved to California after the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) granted Jones a license to fight.
