After the UFC Fight Night 95 event in Brasilia, Brazil on Saturday night, UFC Heavyweight contender Roy “Big Country” Nelson spoke in a backstage interview among other things, about his decision to kick referee “Big” John McCarthy in the butt after his second-round TKO of Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.
Nelson, who said it was hard enough fighting a friend in Bigfoot Silva, spoke about being frustrated with “Big” John over the late stoppage in the fight.
“The referee just did a late stoppage,” said Nelson. “If I gotta do his job too, to stop the fight, because I had a big conversation with John [McCarthy] in the back about doing his job” said Neson, through a number of stutters, before closing by saying, “Bigfoot doesn’t need to take anymore blows to the face.”

At the UFC Fight Night 95 post-fight press conference held after the big event in Brasilia, Brazil on Saturday night, UFC Heavyweight contender Roy “Big Country” Nelson spoke about his post-match actions at the show.
After TKO’ing Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in the second round of their main card bout on Saturday (video highlights here), Nelson kicked referee “Big” John McCarthy.
As Nelson explained at the post-fight presser, he was frustrated that he was forced to hit Bigfoot more times than necessary due to what he considered a late stoppage from “Big” John.
“I’m friends with ‘Bigfoot,’ he has a family, you know? I don’t need to keep punching him in his face. And it’s not one of those like where If I it him so hard and he fell flat on his face that I could have walked away like Mark Hunt. But he fell on his back. I felt like I was giving ‘Bigfoot’ extra damage where he doesn’t actually have to get hit that much. It was more of a push. Like, ‘Dude, come one.’ We had a conversation in the cage about and I told him, ‘He was knocked out.’ And he said, ‘No he wasn’t.’ I know what a knockout is. I knock people out, that’s what I do for a living. For me, it was just one of those, I didn’t want to hurt him more than I had to. It’s like a cop beating the shit out of somebody. It’s like, ‘Dude, enough’s enough.’ It hurt my feelings. I apologized to ‘Big John,’ but I wouldn’t take it back. It just hurt me that I had to keep on hitting a guy that didn’t need to be hit.”

It will be interesting to see how this one unfolds.
UFC heavyweight Roy Nelson, after winning his bout with Antonio Silva on Saturday at UFC Fight Night 95, grew frustrated with referee “Big” John McCarthy for what Nelson believed was a late stoppage following his right-hand shot on Silva.
One of the ways he chose to express that frustration was to push-kick McCarthy in the backside from behind after the fight concluded.
Contact with referees is strictly verboten in more or less every sport, MMA included. In fact, in 2014 a ref shove earned lightweight Jason High his UFC release.
Nelson explained afterward that he hadn’t wanted to hurt Silva—the two are friends away from the cage—any more than was necessary.
“It was a push,” Nelson said of the move at the post-fight press conference (h/t Shaun Al-Shatti of MMA Fighting). “It was more of like, ‘dude, come on.’ Then we had a conversation in the cage. I was like, ‘Dude, he was knocked out.’ And [McCarthy] was like, ‘No, he wasn’t.’ And I’m like, dude, I know what a knockout is. I knock people out. That’s what I do for a living.”
A little farther removed from the heat of battle, Nelson apologized for his actions, but added that he didn’t regret making the move.
“I apologize to Big John, but I wouldn’t take it back,” Nelson said at the presser. “It just hurt me, that I’ve got to keep on hitting a guy that doesn’t need to be hit.”
According to the MMA Fighting report, UFC officials indicated they would not take any disciplinary action against Nelson. It is uncertain what, if any, action will be taken by the Brazilian athletic commission that sanctioned the event, which took place in the federal capital of Brasilia.
Back in 2014, UFC president Dana White said of the High situation (via Sophia Helwani) that “if you touch the referee, [you are] done. …You don’t put your hands on the referee. Ever.”
Although the touch in question following the Nelson fight was a foot, not a hand, it’s probably reasonable to presume White was speaking figuratively, and that contacting a referee with a foot is similar to touching a referee with a hand.
Only, apparently, it isn’t.
There was no immediate explanation from the UFC on why it viewed the Nelson incident differently from the High incident.

Surprisingly enough, Cris “Cyborg” Justino did not add to her impressive list of first round victories Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 95.
But she didn’t suffer defeat either.
Justino bruised Lina Lansberg in the first before finishing her in the second round with vicious ground-and-pound, improving to 2-0 inside the Octagon. The reigning Invicta FC featherweight champion bested Leslie Smith earlier this year.
The co-main event featured Renan Barao earning a decision over Phillipe Nover, while Roy Nelson knocked out Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in a featured main card bout.
However, Nelson’s win will be remembered more for his post-fight antics, as “Big Country” appeared to kick referee John McCarthy because he felt the stoppage was late.
Here are complete results:

UFC Fight Night 95 (also called UFC Brasilia) went down from Ginasio Nilson Nelson in Brasilia, Brazil tonight (September 24, 2016). Headlined by Cristiane ‘Cyborg” Justino’s second bout in the UFC, the event featured a plethora or Brazilian talent.
The main event went down according to the script. Justino’s opponent, UFC newcomer Lina Lansberg, lasted longer than many expected, making it to the second round. But she had to withstand a hellacious beating to do so. Lansberg could mount no meaningful offense, and spent the entire fight in survival mode before the referee finally intervened.
The co-feature saw former bantamweight champion Renan Barao get back on the winning track in his second fight at 145 pounds. He battled former Ultimate Fighter finalist Phillipe Nover, taking a unanimous decision after three relatively uneventful rounds.
And finally, the third from the top billing saw the heavyweight slugfest with the outcome most expected. Roy ‘Big Country’ Nelson and Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva duked it out for the better part of two rounds before Nelson found the chin of his Brazilian counterpart and then finished it on the ground. Most of the chatter about the fight centered on what happened next.
Upset that referee ‘Big’ John McCarthy had not stopped the fight sooner, Nelson made his displeasure felt. After walking away in frustration at being forced to hit his friend Silva more than he felt necessary, Nelson came back and kicked McCarthy in the butt as the latter tended to the prone Brazilian.
