Sage Northcutt ONE Championship

Former UFC welterweight prospect, Sage Northcutt is set to enter mixed martial arts competition for the first time since a ONE Championship debut loss to Cosmo Alexandre back in 2019 – booking an outing against Ahmed Mujtaba on May 5. next under the banner of the Chatri Sityodtong-led organization.

Northcutt, 26, has yet to feature since ONE Championship: Enter the Dragon back in May 2019 against kickboxing talent, Alexandre – where he suffered a devastating knockout loss inside just 29-seconds.

Sidelined for almost four years since, Sage Northcutt underwent a high-profile surgical procedure to address multiple fractures suffered in his face following the loss to the Brazilian kickboxer, limiting his activity under the ONE Championship banner.

Sage Northcutt books first MMA outing in almost 4 year period

However, according to an initial report from Sports Illustrated, Sage Northcutt, a native of Sacramento, has booked his first outing in almost four years in the form of a clash against the 10-2, Mujtaba on an upcoming May 5. card.

11-3 as a professional, Northcutt made significant waves during his three-year tenure under the scrutiny of the UFC, debuting with a first round knockout win over Francisco Trevino at UFC 192 in May 2015.

Establishing a 6-2 promotional records during his eight-fight stint under the Dana White-led banner, Northcutt exited the UFC in the midst of an impressive three-fight winning run – including victories over the trio of Michel Quinones, Thibault Gouti, and Zak Ottow.

Prior to his third professional loss against Alexandre, Northcutt suffered just two losses professionally against both Byran Barberena, and UFC alum, Mickey Gall – both coming via submission.

The May 5. event featuring Northcutt will mark ONE Championship’s first venture into the United States – with undisputed flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson set to meet with Adriano Moraes in the pair’s title trilogy bout in Colorado

Woodley: Northcutt & VanZant Prove UFC Pushes Fighters Too Quick

Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley thinks fighters like Sage Northcutt and Paige VanZant paid the price for being rushed to the spotlight. Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley thinks fighters like Sage Northcutt and Paige VanZant paid the price for being rushed to the spotlight.

Woodley made a name for himself as the UFC welterweight champion, defeating Robbie Lawler for the belt before earning successful title defenses against the likes of Demian Maia and Stephen Thompson.

While Woodley’s best MMA days may be behind him, he remains one of the most vocal personalities in the sport. He isn’t afraid to speak his mind especially when it comes to issues involving the UFC.

During a recent appearance on The Residency Podcast, Woodley gave his thoughts on how the UFC promotes young talent.

“They (UFC) force feed. What happened when you forced Sage Northcutt on us? … No shade, that’s my homie, but they pressed him too quick. He wasn’t ready. I was his training partner, I’m telling you, he wasn’t ready,” Woodley admitted. “He would’ve been great, he could’ve been a champion. He gave me many, many ass-whoopings in the gym. But then he couldn’t take when somebody went to submit him. He couldn’t take pressure. If he couldn’t get right up, it would frustrate him. That was the thing that me and my coach wanted to work with him on. Because he was so young.

“So, Sage, Paige VanZant, all these people they wanted us to be like, ‘This is the person,’ but they gotta still win. What happens when you fuck around and you blow somebody up to ‘this is the person’ and they lose, to Charlie Oliveira. You may want Gaethje there because he doesn’t give a fuck and just says crazy shit, but he may not be able to fuck with Charlie Oliveira. The sport is the sport.”

One exception to Woodley’s points is Khamzat Chimaev. The welterweight star has catapulted to the title hunt after just a few wins, including most recently against former title challenger Gilbert Burns.

VanZant recently made her professional wrestling debut in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and is also signed to Bare Knuckle FC. VanZant went 5-4 during her UFC run.

Northcutt most recently competed against Cosmo Alexandre in ONE Championship back in May 2019. During his UFC career, he went 6-2, with both losses coming by submission.

Woodley feels that the career trajectories of fighters like VanZant and Northcutt would’ve gone a different direction had they taken the Sean O’Malley route with a slow, methodical path to a title.

Do you agree with Tyron Woodley’s comments about Sage Northcutt and Paige VanZant?

Sage Northcutt will no longer be competing at ONE On TNT IV.

Northcutt was set to make his highly-anticipated return against former ONE lightweight champion Shinya Aoki at the event taking place April 28 in Singapore. However, that is no longer the case as the former UFC prospect is suffering from lingering effects of COVID-19 as per ESPN.

It’s a big blow for Northcutt who hasn’t competed since May 2019 when he was brutally knocked out by Cosmo Alexandre in his ONE debut.

The 25-year-old was looking to make a splash in his comeback and earn his first win at the promotion in the process, but that will have to wait for now.

As for Aoki, he will remain on the card and battle Eduard Folayang instead.

It will be a trilogy fight with their first two meetings being lightweight title clashes that saw both fighters earn one win apiece. Their most recent meeting was in March 2019 when Aoki submitted Folayang to become the lightweight champion at the time.

Folayang was originally set to take on Yoshihiro Akiyama but the latter had to withdraw due to injury.
