Three Very Interesting Non-Title Fights In Store From UFC Still This Year (Editorial)

Sure, Ronda Rousey’s return will be hyped to the brim.

And the upcoming interim featherweight title fight between Anthony Pettis and Max Holloway is sure to be fireworks.

Oh, and Cody Garbrandt challenging Dominick Cruz for bantamweight supremacy is awesome.

But there fights that have no title on the line are really ones that I am looking forward to before we close the door on this very interesting 2016 calendar year.

– First up is Donald Cerrone vs. Matt Brown at UFC 206.

Honestly, Cerrone has placed himself on the short list of contenders since moving up to welterweight and could wait on the sidelines for an eliminator bout. But this is “Cowboy” we are talking about and he has not desire to waste time not competing.

Brown, meanwhile, has lost two straight and four of his last five after stringing together a seven-fight win streak between 2012-14.

– Next, Sage Northcutt and Mickey Gall square off at UFC on FOX 22.

Northcutt showed his mental toughness when he rebounded from his first career loss in July with a decision win over Enrique Marin. In January, the uber-prospect lost to Bryan Barberena via submission.

Gall, of course, ended the dream of Phil “CM Punk” Brooks in the MMA debut for the former WWE superstar. Gall did what most everyone expected him to do: dominate, submitting Brooks in the first round.

– And finally, former heavyweight champions – and opponents – Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez battle it out at UFC 207.

Werdum captured the first meeting when he submitted Velasquez back at UFC 188 in 2015. However, he dropped the title to Stipe Miocic this past May in his first defense before rebounding with a decision over Travis Browne.

Velasquez has battled injuries over his career, but is 5-1 since a loss to Junior dos Santos in his last six. That includes finishes of Browne, dos Santos and twice vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.

Of course, all of this is contingent on the fighters remaining healthy and making it to their scheduled dates.

Tyron Woodley: Sage Northcutt Is Faster & More Powerful Than Wonderboy

UFC welterweight champ Tyron Woodley is headed for the biggest fight of his MMA career when he faces surging No. 1 contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson in the co-main event of November 12’s blockbuster UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden in New York City. UFC welterweight champ Tyron Woodley is headed for the biggest fight of his MMA career when he faces surging No. 1 contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson in the co-main event of November 12’s blockbuster UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden in New York City.

After winning the title with an earth-shaking first round knockout over former champion Robbie Lawler at July 30’s UFC 201, ‘The Chosen One’ will now meet an opponent whom many feel has the perfect to defeat his hard-charging style, as “Wonderboy” used his unique karate-based offense to defeat former title contender Rory MacDonald in his most recent bout at UFC Fight Night 89.

The one-sided decision win secured seven straight wins and a title shot for Thompson, who has finished Johny Hendricks, Jake Ellenberger, and surging middleweight Robert Whittaker during the streak. He may possess the most momentum of any fighter in the Octagon, yet Woodley believes Thompson isn’t even as good as his new training partner.

In a video released on his Youtube channel, Woodley is featured sparring with highly touted UFC lightweight Sage Northcutt. Apparently impressed with ‘Super’ Sage’s skills, Woodley made the bold proclamation that Northcutt is indeed faster, more powerful, and in possession of better takedown defense than the larger and more experienced Thompson (transcribed by Bloody Elbow):

“These young guys, man. Old man got to whip out those new tricks, because they come at you,” Woodley said about Northcutt. “I work with Sage. He’s obviously in a similar style as the opponent I will be fighting against.”

“He, just in my opinion, is just a little bit faster, and his strikes come with a little bit more force. His takedown defense should be better. His power should be better, so I’m actually training with a better version of what I’m going to compete with.”

Those words could (will) evoke the collective ire of the online MMA community in a big way, as Woodley has already been the subject of many an online attack following his win over Lawler, including alleged instances of racism.

But aside from those ridiculous back-and-forths, Northcutt is still very inexperienced compared to Thompson, and has yet to display the pure knockout power that the flashy, pinpoint striking “Wonderboy” has used to win his way to the top of one of MMA’s deepest divisions.

Do you believe Northcutt comes close to outclassing Thompson in the areas Woodley focused on? Watch their training video and decide for yourself:

Following his first round submission win over CM Punk at UFC 203 last month, Mickey Gall called out fellow top prospect Sage Northcutt for a fight. The UFC brass got wind of the call out and made the bout official at UFC on FOX 22.

Gall recently spoke with TMZ Sports about the fight and he had a lot to say about his opponent. According to Gall, he thinks this fight will go the distance and will not end in the first round like his previous fights have ended. Gall vowed to put a beating on Northcutt and break his bones.

“I’m gonna do a lot to him. I don’t see this one being one round. I see this being longer than that and I’m gonna break his bones. I’m gonna hurt him bad. I’m gonna bust him up, break his bones, tear things. I’m gonna put a beating on him…His boxing sucks. His ground game is pretty bad. So there’s holes on both sides. I know how I’m gonna fight him. It’s gonna be bad for him. He’s gonna feel like crap.”

Despite the trash talk, Gall made it clear that he doesn’t dislike him but thinks he is a dork and can’t wait to get his hands on him.

“I don’t dislike him. I think he’s very corny. I think he’s like a silly boy. I don’t know, I think he’s kind of a dork but I don’t hate him at all. I love him. I can’t wait to fight him, can’t wait to get my hands on him.”

Gall has said in previous interviews that they should have a stipulation on the line for this fight like a good ole pro wrestling match. Gall suggested a loser’s hair leaves town bet on their fight. It should be noted that Northcutt never responded to the challenge, but Gall says the offer is still on the table.

“Heck yeah, why not? I put it out there. I didn’t hear anything from him but hey, if I lose I’ll cut my hair, but I ain’t losing. You can see a bald blond boy.”

Gall thinks after winning a few fights, down the road, he’ll be UFC welterweight champion.

“I’m gonna be a UFC champion. I don’t know a timetable, those things are hard to say but eventually I’ll be UFC champion.”

UFC on FOX 22 takes place on December 17th at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California. No other bouts have been announced for the event.

Mickey Gall asked for CM Punk, and Mickey Gall received CM Punk.

Now, after calling out Sage Northcutt, the UFC brass has answered yet again, placing Gall and Northcutt on the UFC on FOX 22 card.

Gall (3-0) earned his second Octagon triumph last month when he defeated Punk in the first round. The youngster dominated the former WWE superstar, locking up a submission to remain unbeaten.

Northcutt (8-1) got back on track in July when he defeated Enrique Marin. “Super” had suffered his first career loss in January of this year to Bryan Barberena – the only other time he has fought at welterweight where the Gall contest will take place.

No other bouts have been made official for UFC on FOX 22, which takes place December 17 from the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California.
