Santiago Ponzinibbio’s return is on hold for now. The former welterweight contender was set to make his return to the Octagon for the first time in over two years as he was scheduled to face Muslim Salikhov in the upcoming January 16 event. However, that won’t be the case anymore as Salikhov had to withdraw from the contest. As per a post on social media, it’s due to health problems stemming from COVID-19 symptoms he suffered in September.
There is no timeline for when he can return for now.
There is also no word on whether the UFC will look for a replacement opponent for Ponzinibbio as of now, but there should be enough time to do so.
Regardless, it’s a big blow for the Argentine whose return will have to wait for the time being. Ponzinibbio is currently on a seven-fight winning streak but hasn’t competed since a fourth-round knockout win over Neil Magny in November 2018.
A number of health issues as well as injuries have seen him remain on the sidelines since as “Gente Boa” is no longer ranked in the welterweight ranks due to his inactivity.
Hopefully, he is able to land a short-notice replacement and get his career back on track while Salikhov also has a speedy recovery.
Who do you think Ponzinibbio should face in his return now?

Santiago Ponzinibbio is finally returning to action.
The former welterweight contender hasn’t competed since a fourth-round knockout of Neil Magny back in November 2018 at UFC Buenos Aires.
A number of major bacterial infections as well as a battle with arthritis have kept the Argentine out of action for nearly two years now as his inactivity has seen his removal from the UFC rankings.
Not for long, however.
As per Milenio, Ponzinibbio is ready to return to action and has been offered a fight with Muslim Salikhov for the UFC’s upcoming January 16 event. Nothing is confirmed as of yet, however.
Before his long layoff, Ponzinibbio was a winner of seven straight fights and seemed destined for a title shot. His notable wins included the aforementioned Magny, Mike Perry and Gunnar Nelson.
“I want to come back as fast as possible and fight for the belt,” Ponzinibbio said. “My idea for 2020 is to fight at least three times, including a title fight. That’s my plan for 2020, brother.”
Maybe 2021 is the year Ponzinibbio achieves his goal of becoming welterweight champion.
Salikhov, meanwhile, is on a four-fight winning streak and is coming off a split decision victory over Elizue Zaleski dos Santos in July.

UFC welterweight Santiago Ponzinibbio believes it’s for the best that Colby Covington departed American Top Team (ATT).
Covington made headlines earlier this year when he revealed he had departed his longtime gym in ATT. He claimed it was a decision he made along with ATT owner Dan Lambert as it came off the back of rising tensions in the gym with Covington having friction with the likes of Jorge Masvidal, Dustin Poirier and Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
And Ponzinibbio was certainly happy to see the back of Covington as he felt he was bringing bad vibes to the gym.
“He had to leave the gym for all that role he started playing and bringing in a bad vibe, so he had to leave,” Ponzinibbio said in an episode of Hablemos MMA. “I think it was a dumb attitude from his part and, yeah, better that he left because he was bringing a bad vibe to the gym. So it’s good that he left. It’s for the better.”
Ponzinibbio had trained with Covington in the past and shared coaches with him as well such as head coach Mike Brown. However, they never really had a relationship with each other.
That said, Ponzinibbio did give Covington his props as a fighter and given the current situation in the welterweight rankings, the Argentine would love to face him.
“Friendship we never had,” Ponzinibbio added. “I did train with him, but never friendship. I have nothing against him. He was never really my friend. We did share trainings a few times because we shared the same coach, Mike Brown. So we shared coach, and we would sometimes get together with Mikey and share a class, but nothing more than that.
“It was always work and professionalism and nothing more. I think he’s a great athlete. He’s a top guy in the division, and that’s a fight that would interest me. I think it’s a good matchup for me, and I think I’d knock him out and win. It’s a fight that interests me a lot.”
Ponzinibbio hasn’t competed since a fourth-round knockout of Neil Magny back in November 2018.
