Sara McMann has sounded off on fighters using illegal substances in MMA.

Sara McMann has been a crucial part of the UFC bantamweight division since 2013. She is a talented fighter and former Olympic wrestler. She earned herself a title fight back in 2014 and has been working to earn another at 41 years old.

McMann, having experience in both MMA and wrestling, has a unique point of view on a particular subject within the world of combat sports: performance-enhancing drug usage.

McMann has fought some of the best the UFC bantamweight division has to offer. She came up in the division around the time the USADA was introduced as the UFC’s drug testing partner. In the time since the USADA has been involved, many fighters have tested positive and been suspended, fined, or both. McMann, however, does not believe that all cheaters are being caught.

“I can tell you, unequivocally there are people cheating, and I’ve actually fought opponents, sometimes it’s people I beat, and sometimes it’s people that I haven’t and I’ve had some of their teammates message me personally, I won’t say who but like, Hey, I don’t know if this helps or not but they definitely are doing PEDs and like it’s, it kind of breaks my heart,” McMann said in an interview with THE HANNIBAL TV.

Drug usage in the UFC has been a hot-button issue for many years. Perhaps two of the biggest cases of USADA failure are Jon Jones and TJ Dillashaw.

Dillashaw tested positive for a banned substance and was suspended for two years. Dillashaw admitted that he did in fact take this substance and accepted his punishment. Jones tested positive on multiple occasions and to this day maintains his innocence. This sort of behavior will never sit well with McMann.

“Morally, I don’t think it’s okay. I don’t,” she said. “I don’t want to know or be friends with or support anybody who cheats. Yeah. But even more than that, people have died in MMA, you know, or brain damage or alter their life and you say, ‘Yeah, we signed a waiver, but we kind of signed the waiver expecting somebody to be on an even playing ground.

“I mean, they should start a cheater league and then they can go and just bash each other’s brains. Like, for me, I had to mentally kind of get past it. Because I had a lot of bitterness.

“I had a lot of bitterness and anger towards people who are doing that and I’m like, you know if it gets to a certain point, I really feel like a lot of my opponents are cheating or doing PEDs. I’ll just retire.”

McMann won her last outing against Karol Rosa back in March following a loss to the new champion Julianna Peña. McMann is looking to get another chance at Peña but first will face Aspen Ladd on August 13.

How common do you think PED use is in the UFC today?

A UFC bantamweight showdown between former title challenger Sara McMann and rising contender Aspen Ladd is set for an August 13th UFC Fight Night.

News of the McMann vs. Ladd booking was first reported by All Access MMA.

McMann is coming off of a unanimous decision win over Karol Rosa back in March. She had returned to the Octagon following a 14-month hiatus since her loss to Julianna Peña at UFC 257.

McMann challenged for the bantamweight title back at UFC 170 against then-champion Ronda Rousey. She went on to lose via first-round TKO but rebounded with wins over Lauren Murphy and Jessica Eye.

McMann, a wrestling standout, will face a tough challenge in the form of Ladd. Despite coming off back-to-back losses to Raquel Pennington and Norma Dumont, she remains one of the top prospects in the bantamweight division.

McMann and Ladd were supposed to fight in June 2020 before Ladd suffered a torn ACL and MCL. McMann was removed from the card and fought against Peña seven months later.

McMann and Ladd are both looking to get back into the bantamweight title discussion with a win. Peña will defend her title against Amanda Nunes in a title rematch later this year.

The McMann/Ladd matchup adds to an Aug. 13 Fight Night that is still without a main event. A venue and location for the card are expected to be announced soon.

Scoring the first finish of the night in her return to the win-column, The Ultimate Fighter 18 victor, Julianna ‘The Venezuelan Vixen’ Pena stamped her bantamweight title aspirations via a late, third-round rear-naked choke win over verteran one-time title chaser, Sara McMann.

In a three-round affair jam-packed with grappler exchanages and scrambles, Pena and McMann entered the third frame possibly tied on the judge’s scorecards, however, Pena removed the three Octagon judges from the equation with a late rear-naked choke win.

Softening 40-year-old McMann with hammer-fists and well-placed ground strikes, Washington native, Pena eventually got both her hooks in before transitioning to a body-triangle. Patiently setting up herself for a rear-naked choke win, Pena scored the tap from McMann, before calling for a bantamweight title clash against two-weight world champion, the dominant Amanda ‘The Lioness’ Nunes.

Below, catch the highlights from Pena’s submission win over McMann at UFC 257.

Aspen Ladd

Bantamweight contender Aspen Ladd is injured and therefore unable to compete against former title challenger Sara McMann at UFC on ESPN 12 on June 27. John Morgan of MMA Junkie broke the news via social media, he wrote.

“Unfortunate news for a top women’s bantamweight contender: @AspenLaddMMA suffered an injury in training and is out of her fight next week with Sara McMann. I’m told her recovery could be anywhere between 3-9 months.”

Ladd returned to the winning ways last time out by stopping Yana Kunitskaya at UFC Washington in December 2019. Prior to that Ladd suffered the first and only loss of his MMA career. The 25-year-old was clipped early by renowned striker Germaine de Randamie who finished the rising star in just 16 seconds when they fought in the main event at UFC Sacramento in July 2019.

The #3 ranked bantamweight took to Instagram to announce she had been forced out of her fight with McMann and provide more details about her injury, she wrote.

“Unfortunately, for the first time in my career I’m being pulled due to injury. This is me right now, finally home after an #mri today and a long talk with a very good doctor. So here’s the timeline, I got injured on my last hard day of training last week but still planned on toughing it out and fighting, I didn’t realize quite how bad it was. I have been training on it since the initial injury to the best of my abilities and my weight was( is) super low already. So I was thinking I had this. Anyways, I had planned on getting a cortisone shot, and when I showed up to that appointment yesterday the concerned doc ultrasounded my knee, then booked the #mri stat . Turns out I just have a REALLY high pain tolerance. I have 2 grade 3 tears and a couple other injuries going on. I’ll know later this week Iif surgery is in my future, but hope to be back in the cage before the end of the year. Honesty is the best policy so here you go, sucks because I feel phenomenal otherwise #shithappens #timetofixit #ufc
