In the wake of Jon Jones’ disturbing arrest, UFC bantamweight Sean O’Malley has suggested that alcohol has a grave effect on a person’s ability to be themselves.

Prior to last month’s UFC 266 pay-per-view, Jones was in Las Vegas for this year’s Hall of Fame ceremony. After being inducted into the Fight Wing for his memorable first clash with Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165, “Bones” found himself in an all-too-familiar controversy.

Hours after the ceremony concluded, Jones was arrested for misdemeanor battery domestic violence and injuring and tampering with a vehicle. Later reports revealed that the incarceration followed a dispute with his fiancée, which had allegedly turned physical.

While the likes of Israel Adesanya, Chael Sonnen, and Daniel Cormier have given damning verdicts on Jones’ latest transgression, Sean O’Malley has laid heavy blame on the alcohol the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion had consumed.

Speaking on a recent episode of The BrOMalley Show, O’Malley said that while there’s no excuse for the crimes Jones allegedly committed, he’s aware of how an excessive amount of alcohol can change a person.

“Speaking of looking good and steps ahead and just dominant, Jon Jones is 1-0 this year, that’s fucked up…it sucks. I don’t feel like I’m in a position to even judge. I don’t know what’s going on in his mind or I don’t know what’s going on in his life. Like, obviously he shouldn’t have done that. Obviously that’s fucked up, obviously he knows that. Dude, when you’re drunk, it’s not your true self. You’re fucking drunk dude…like dude, who knows what he’s dealing with? Not okay, 100%. Should definitely get punished for it. I don’t know if he’s necessarily a piece of shit bad guy. He needs help dude…you can’t beat on your boo.” (h/t Sportskeeda)

Following his HOF induction, Jones provided an update on his return to the octagon. The former champ told reporters that he’s targeting the second quarter of 2022 for his heavyweight debut, preferably against UFC Heavyweight Champion Francis Ngannou. It remains to be seen if his UFC status will be affected after his latest arrest.

While Jones awaits his court date, O’Malley will be preparing for his return to the cage later this year. After a search for an opponent for December 11, which included callouts of Dominick Cruz, Pedro Munhoz, and rumors of an agreed fight with Brian Kelleher, it was announced that “Sugar” is set to meet #15-ranked bantamweight Raulian Paiva at UFC 269.

Since falling to his first career defeat against Marlon “Chito” Vera last year, O’Malley has secured consecutive victories over Thomas Almeida and Kris Moutinho in 2021. His triumph against the promotional newcomer at UFC 264 in July saw him put in a record-breaking striking performance inside the T-Mobile Arena.

Should the 26-year-old advance past Paiva in December, it stands to reason that a number next to his name and a top opponent awaits him next time out.

Suga‘ Sean O’Malley talked about Jon Jones’s most recent run-in with the authorities on the latest episode of his podcast, the ‘brO’Malley show’.

“Jones’s problem with partying has gotten him in trouble before, but nothing worse than this past incident. Jones came back to his hotel room after his Hall of Fame induction on September 24th in Las Vegas, Nevada. He proceeded to pull his fiancee’s hair with his child in the room. When the police got there, they described her as having a bloody mouth and it was swollen. Jones also headbutted a police vehicle while trying to get officers to engage him in a fight.

Since the incident, Jones has posted a couple of Instagram stories. One of them is a workout video with resolutions around him lifting. The other being a post of him and his fiancee kissing, showing that everything is now “fine” between the two.

Many people have spoken out about the incident since. Some call for Jones to be released by the UFC, while others have called for him to get help and offered their support to him. O’Malley is just the latest to speak about the incident.

“Speaking of looking good and steps ahead and just dominant. Jon Jones is 1-0 this year, that’s f*cked up… it sucks. I don’t feel like I’m in a position to even judge. I don’t know what’s going on in his mind or I don’t know what’s going on in his life. Like obviously he shouldn’t have done that. Obviously, that’s f*cked up, obviously, he knows that. Dude when you’re drunk, it’s not your true self. You’re f*cking drunk dude… like dude, who knows what he’s dealing with? Not okay, 100%. Should definitely get punished for it. I don’t know if he’s necessarily a piece of s*it bad guy. He needs help dude… you can’t beat on your boo.” (Transcribed by Sportskeeda)

O’Malley was both, offering his support to Jones while also calling him out on his actions. There is no excuse for beating on a woman, no matter how intoxicated you are. It will be interesting to see how the UFC takes action with the Jones situation.

Sean O’Malley To fight Raulian Paiva At UFC 269

‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley will reportedly be going head to head against the 15th ranked bantamweight Raulian Paiva at UFC 269.

O’Malley had his eyes on Dominick Cruz earlier this week by tweeting “Suga vs Cruz December 11th”. Cruz found himself matched up with Pedro Munhoz at UFC 269, leaving O’Malley without a fight. That was until later last night. O’Malley was taken aback and surprised when the news broke about his upcoming fight with Paiva.

While on twitch, O’Malley found out he was scheduled to fight and wasn’t even brought up to him prior to the announcement. “Twitch Stream, I’m just seeing all this shit too. I haven’t even talked to anybody, I have no clue what they’re even talking about.” O’Malley said to his viewers that were talking about the fight announcement.

The rising star ended up getting a phone call while still streaming and accepted the fight live. O’Malley’s last fight was against Kris Moutinho at UFC 264. O’Malley landed a record-breaking amount of head strikes against Moutinho while on his way to earning himself a TKO victory late in the third round. O’Malley is 14-1, but he still proclaims himself an undefeated fighter since his one loss came via an injury mid-fight.

On the other side of the fight, Paiva has earned himself a three-fight win streak which included an upset majority decision over Kyler Phillips. That match earned both fighters a bonus for the barnburner they had. This fight is a big fight for O’Malley’s career and a win could possibly place him in the top 15 rankings. A win over Paiva could be the fight O’Malley needs to earn himself a fight against Cruz in the near future.

O’Malley is one of the many bright stars in the bantamweight division and has some of the best striking in the division. It will be fun to see the return of the ‘Suga Show’ this December at UFC 269.

ESPN’s Brett Okamoto is reporting that Sean O’ Malley (14-1) will meet Raulian Paiva (21-3) at UFC 269.

O’Malley comes into the bout riding a two-fight win streak. In his last outing, the colorful bantamweight was seen putting a clinic on a late notice replacement in Kris Mouthino. Though Mouthino showed incredible heart and durability, he offered little in the way of offense for O’Malley.

After joining the promotion with two losses in a row, Paiva now finds himself on a three-fight winning streak. Paiva’s most recent victory was an upset over a rising prospect Kyler Phillips in July.

UFC 269 is set for December 11th with the venue yet to be announced. Thus far the card is sparse on announced bouts, but fans can expect to see two title fights at the top of the card.

Amanda Nunes will meet Julianna Peña in a rescheduled bantamweight title match-up. Also slated for the event is a third bout between flyweight champion Brandon Moreno and Deiveson Figueiredo.

Dominick Cruz Rejects O’Malley Callout, Says He Has A Fight Booked

Former UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz has rejected a callout from Sean O’Malley, and in doing so, revealed that he already has an opponent for his next fight.

O’Malley’s callout came as his search for a December opponent continues. He was offered a clash with Frankie Edgar at UFC 268 in November. He cited his coach Tim Welch’s availability and New York’s high taxation as his reason for turning the fight against the former UFC Lightweight Champion down.

It looked as if “Sugar” was set to meet Brian Kelleher at UFC 269 on December 11. O’Malley’s coach asked “Boom” if he was free on that date during an exchange on Twitter. Kelleher even appeared to publicly confirm that the 26-year-old had accepted the fight.

Despite that, O’Malley turned his attention to former champ and #11-ranked bantamweight Cruz. Reiterating his desire to fight on the UFC 269 card, which is expected to be headlined by a lightweight title clash between Charles Oliveira and Dustin Poirier, the surging 135-pound star proposed a clash with “The Dominator.”

Responding on Twitter, not only did Cruz reject O’Malley, but he also announced that he already has a date and an opponent set for his next appearance.

“I have a date with someone that is ranked up ahead of me stud. Same thing you’re looking for. So I get it. May the force be with you in figuring that one out for yourself.”

Given that his opponent is ranked above him, we can narrow down the options. Petr Yan and Cory Sandhagen are set to fight for the interim title at UFC 267, TJ Dillashaw is still recovering from knee surgery, Rob Font and José Aldo are expected to clash at the December 4 Fight Night, Cody Garbrandt will be debuting at flyweight against Kai Kara-France before the end of the year, and Frankie Edgar will meet Marlon “Chito” Vera at UFC 268 in November.

That leaves Merab Dvalishvili, Marlon Moraes, and Pedro Munhoz. Given the Georgian’s win at UFC 266 last weekend, it seems unlikely he’d accept a fight against a bantamweight outside of the top-10, especially so soon after his victory. The same goes for “Magic” Moraes. While his losing skid makes a clash with Cruz logical, there’s little chance he’s already signed on for another fight just days out from another disappointing setback.

Munhoz vs. Cruz makes sense. Given the length of time since the Brazilian’s defeat to Aldo at UFC 265, he’s pretty much the only man inside the top-10 without an opponent and who’s had a decent break since his last fight.

Cruz, a two-time 135-pound UFC champ, boasts wins over the likes of Dillashaw, Urijah Faber, Demetrious Johnson, and Joseph Benavidez. After losing his title to Garbrandt in 2016, “The Dominator,” who’s had a torrid run of injuries in the promotion, was on the sidelines for nearly four years.

Having made an unsuccessful comeback against Henry Cejudo in 2020, Cruz returned to the win column for the first time since UFC 199 against Casey Kenney earlier this year. He’ll be looking to return to the form that once brought him a 13-fight win streak when he’s next in action.

Sean O’Malley was seriously impressed by Nick Diaz’s performance at UFC 266 and is already looking forward to seeing the former Strikeforce champion back in action.

Diaz returned from a six-year layoff to rematch Robbie Lawler this past weekend. The welterweight duo first squared off all the way back at UFC 47 in 2004. On that occasion Diaz emerged with the win, 17 years later ‘Ruthless’ got his revenge at UFC 266.

The fight delivered big time with both men going back and forth for three rounds before Diaz dropped to his knees and refused to get back to his feet forcing Herb Dean to wave off the bout.

O’Malley recapped the fight on the TimboSugarShow podcast, he said.

“That was one the sickest fights ever. Just two f***ing dogs… There’s just not a lot of guys that bring that f***ing level of hype dude.”

‘Suga’ went on to consider who might be next for Diaz. The bantamweight prospect first named Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal as potential opponents before talking up a fight between Diaz and Mike Perry.

“Kamaru (Usman)? Nick versus even Jorge (Masvidal)? Oh, Nick vs. Mike Perry could be sick,” O’Malley said. “Nick might dog him. Just outbox him. That’d be sick, Nick (vs.) Perry would be sick.” (Transcribed by Sportskeeda)

‘Platinum’ was once an exciting prospect himself but has fallen off in recent years. The 30-year-old has lost four of his last five UFC fights and appears to be on the brink of being cut by the promotion, not that he’d mind. Perry has been open about his desire to pursue lucrative opportunities in boxing.

Diaz hasn’t recorded a win inside the Octagon since beating BJ Penn over three rounds more than a decade ago. Prior to UFC 266, he had taken a long time away from the sport after suffering a unanimous decision defeat against Anderson Silva in 2015. The result was later overturned to a no-contest after ‘The Spider’ failed his post-fight drug test.
