After a staph infection forced Hawaii’s Louis Smolka [17-7-0] out, the search began to find a short-notice replacement for 135lb showman, ‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley [13-1-0] at July 10th’s UFC 264.

The bright spark, O’Malley, is said to have had a number of contenders chomping at the bit for the chance to face off against the high-profile fighter. Yet many fans arched their eyebrows following the announcement that the little-known Kris Moutinho [9-4-0] would be squaring off with Suga, in his debut for the promotion. Better still, the clash serves as a tasty hors d’oeuvre to the McGregor vs Poirier III main meal at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena, live on PPV. Quite the induction for the 5’7” Moutinho.

The initial frontrunner to face ‘Suga’ was Vancouver, Washington native, Ricky Simón but that bout fell out of bed when the American Top Team Portland alumni was unable to make the 135lb bantamweight cut-off.

“They sent me a list of a couple of guys, Simón being one of them,” O’Malley told MMAJunkie I told them, ‘I want to stay on the card. I’ve had a great camp and my weight is trending towards a bantamweight fight. Find me someone that can make ’35.’ They sent me a list of names, Simón was the toughest one on there and I picked him. They called me and said, ‘He can’t make weight.’ I don’t know if it was a miscommunication that they put his name in there, for ’45. I told the UFC, I was pretty clear that I want to fight at ’35. So, I dunno. There’s a lot of people on Twitter that called me out that weren’t on that list. I’m just happy I’m on the card at ’35.”

O’Malley comes in as a -900 favourite for the bout. Yet, despite the criticism from the fans, the Montana Maverick remains wary that Moutinho isn’t getting the props he merits.

“A lot of people think it’s a lose-lose for me. I make a lot of money to go out there and knock the guy (out). This guy’s tough. I watched one of his fights this morning and he’s not just a scrub, he’s not a nobody. Well, he is kind of a nobody because no one really knows who he is. But to be fair, not a lot of people know who Simón is, really. He’s beat a couple dudes in the UFC. I couldn’t tell you how many fights he’s had in the UFC. So he comes in there, he shocks the world, it’s a huge fight for him. Props to him for stepping up to take it.”

While there’s evident respect for the skills of Moutinho, the 5’11’’ KO specialist, O’Malley, will still be looking to sizzle in Sin City.

“He might go in there thinking it’s a win-win for him. He goes out there and loses, he’s in the UFC. But I don’t just knock people out. I change people’s careers. Mentally, the way I knock people out, they step into that cage and they’re different the next time they get out there. So it could be the beginning of his career or it could be the end of his career. So, we’ll see.”

Cory Sandhagen Sean O'Malley

Cory Sandhagen is a fan of Sean O’Malley’s style, but not his recent track record of opponents when it comes to his time in the UFC to this point.

Sandhagen spoke with LowKickMMA ahead of his highly-anticipated main event bout with former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw at UFC on ESPN 27 later this month. O’Malley is slated to face Kris Moutinho on the UFC 264 main card, who will make his promotional debut after Louis Smolka had to withdraw from the bout due to an undisclosed injury in fight camp.

Many around the MMA community have been frustrated with the lack of competition that O’Malley will face on paper at the upcoming pay-per-view, and Sandhagen is one of them.

“I’d like to see him fight some tougher guys,” Sandhagen told LowKickMMA’s James Lynch. “I don’t know how much of that is on him, or on the UFC. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt because when I hear him speak, you can tell he wants to be a champ.

“But he’s fighting guys that won’t make him a champion. I don’t think too many guys in the division stepped up so he was stuck with a debuting guy.”

Moutinho will make his UFC debut on short notice after brief stints with Cage Fury and CES MMA. This will by far be the biggest stage that he’s been on to this point in his career on the biggest card of the summer, featuring the trilogy between Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor.

O’Malley has won four of his last five fights, with his lone loss coming against Marlon Vera at UFC 252. He is coming off a dominant knockout win over Thomas Almeida at UFC 260 after a seven-month hiatus.

O’Malley vs. Moutinho will still garner the attention of viewers, but not nearly the excitement as opposed to if O’Malley faced someone like Tim Elliott or Ricky Simon. Regardless, all eyes will be on O’Malley as he attempts to continue his rise through the UFC.

‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley has a theory about why his original UFC 264 opponent, Louis Smolka, withdrew from their scheduled match-up less than two weeks out.

The official reason for Smolka’s sudden withdrawal is that he was declared medically unfit to fight due to an infection. ‘Da Last Samurai’ insists he still wanted to fight at UFC 264. Smolka says he still hopes to fight O’Malley “down the line”.

“I was really excited for this fight,” Smolka wrote on social media. “Being from Hawai’i, I have that jus scrap mentality so if it were solely up to me, I’d still fight. But, I have an infection so unfortunately I’ve been deemed medically unfit. It sucks, but we have to be responsible about my health and the health of my training partners and opponent. I understand that Sean is set to stay on the card so I wish him the best. I’m sure we will see each other down the line.

“This is a bummer, but it’s the reality of fight camps and continuous training. We are optimistic that we can get a new date set for you all when I my infection clears.

“Thank you to my family, the @ufc, my managers, nutritionist, coaches, team, and the fans for the help and support. I appreciate you all very much. We are known for turning setbacks into comebacks, so that’s the plan.”

O’Malley isn’t buying Smolka’s reason for withdrawal. The popular bantamweight fighter took to his YouTube channel to provide an alternative theory on his opponent’s pull-out.

“Smolka’s manager was at my gym, watching me spar the other day, a couple of weeks ago and I was on fire. I was on fire,” O’Malley said. “He asked Tim and I respectfully, he said, ‘Hey do you mind if I sit and watch?… I said, ‘Watch, tell him whatever you want, I don’t care.’ I looked f*ck*ing sharp that day. This is complete conspiracy theory. I looked sharp, I was on f*cking fire.”

“Sparring day for me is an opportunity to perform,” O’Malley added. “In my head, it’s the fight. I gotta perform, I gotta do what I do in the octagon… Did his manager go and say, ‘Hey bud, I love you, don’t take this fight. I don’t want you to die.’ Smolka’s licking fu**ing wrestling mats trying to get staph, I don’t know if you can get staph…That’s a conspiracy theory, maybe that’s what happened, maybe not.” (Transcribed by Essentially Sports)

O’Malley is now set to face UFC newcomer Kris Moutinho on the undercard of Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor III on July 10.

Louis Smolka has released a statement detailing what led to his recent withdrawal.

Smolka was expected to open up the UFC 264 main card on Saturday in a bantamweight matchup with rising star Sean O’Malley. That was until it was reported that Smolka had to pull out due to injury.

In the scramble since, O’Malley will remain on the card as he will instead battle promotional newcomer Kris Moutinho on short notice. As for what led to Smolka pulling out, it was an infection that deemed him medically unfit to compete despite wanting to fight through it.

He’s hoping to get a new fight date once the infection clears and that he will meet O’Malley down the line.

“I was really excited for this fight,” Smolka wrote on Instagram. “Being from Hawai’i, I have that jus scrap mentality so if it were solely up to me, I’d still fight. But, I have an infection so unfortunately I’ve been deemed medically unfit. It sucks, but we have to be responsible about my health and the health of my training partners and opponent. “Thank you to my family, the @ufc, my managers, nutritionist, coaches, team, and the fans for the help and support. I appreciate you all very much. We are known for turning setbacks into comebacks, so that’s the plan.”

Smolka was looking to make it two wins in a row having last TKO’d Jose Quinonez in December.

O’Malley will also look to make it two wins in a row after he knocked out Thomas Almeida in March. It was his first fight since suffering his first professional defeat against Marlon Vera last year.
