Sean Omalley’s return to the octagon has been moved back from UFC 247 which is scheduled to take place on Feb 7. He’ll now fight Jose Quinonez at UFC 248 on March 7 at the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+. No reason was given for this date shift.

O’malley hasn’t fought since March 2018. The 25-year-old rising star was on the cusp of big things before his career came to a halt. By the time he get back in the cage he’ll have sat out for more than two years due to issues with the USADA (US Anti Doping Agency). O’Malley tested positive for banned substance Ostrarine. He was forced out of his UFC 229 fight with future opponent Quinonez and faced a six month ban despite claiming this failure was due to a contaminated dietary supplement. The bantamweight star was set to make his eagerly anticipated return against Marlon Vera at UFC 239 in July 2019. However, he again failed USADA tests for the same substance. It was believed to be a residual effect from his initial fail but nonetheless he was pulled from the card and faced further investigation, although no additional punishment was given.

He’ll face a tough return to the octagon. Quinonez has been active winning five of his last six bouts. His lone defeat came to another rising star in Nathaiel Wood in March 2019. The Mexican got back to winning ways last time out against Carlos Huachin. Quinonez will want to make it two in a row by exploiting any potential ring rus his opponent may have.

UFC 248 is currently without a main event right now. Although Israel Adesanya is expected to make his first middleweight title defence against Yoel Romero on the card. The co-main event will see Weili Zhang face off against Joanna Jedrzejczyk for the 115lb title.

Sean O’Malley is back.

After having last competed at UFC 222 back in March 2018, “Sugar” announced he would be returning at UFC 247 which takes place February 8 in Houston, Texas.

In an Instagram post on Tuesday, O’Malley posted a photo of himself alongside Jose Quinonez who is seemingly his opponent. As per MMA Junkie, the matchup is confirmed.

“MERRY CHRISTMAS MOTHA F*CKAS. I promise 2020 is my year,” O’Malley wrote as the caption. “I’m coming back and taking over. I can’t wait for you guys to feel the energy I’m bringing into the Octagon Feb 8th in Texas.”

Although the fight is not officially confirmed by the UFC, one can expect an announcement soon.

O’Malley’s long absence can be attributed to a leg injury he suffered in his last win over Andre Soukhamthath. Afterwards, he had to deal with United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) ordeals after testing positive for traces of ostarine. At the time, he was scheduled to face Quinonez at UFC 229.

O’Malley tested positive for ostarine again ahead of his UFC 239 fight with Marlon Vera earlier this year which kept him on the sidelines further. However, they were remnants from his previous failed test so he was suspended, but didn’t receive any sanctions.

Hopefully, he can get his career back on track in the new year.

Sean O’Malley was supposed to return at UFC 239 against Marlon Vera. Yet, he was flagged by USADA and the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) removed him from the card. But, USADA says it is from the same tainted supplement that he was already suspended before, ie. Jon Jones’ situation.

The NSAC voted unanimously to extend O’Malley’s temporary suspension, according to MMA Junkie. They are reporting the bantamweight should have his hearing at the next commission meeting. Which as of right now, does not have a date. Yet, they mentioned the NSAC is normally fluid on dates.

O’Malley is coming off of a six-month suspension for Ostarine, where he along with a few other fighters all were caught with it in their system. Yet, they were all ruled from a tainted supplement but were still suspended, and the 24-year-old is the only one where it came back up in his system.

Currently, he is 10-0 as a pro with his last fight coming at UFC 222 in March of 2018. There, he beat Andre Soukhamthath by decision. He is 2-0 inside the Octagon and got signed to the Las Vegas-based promotion after he beat Alfred Khashakyan by knockout on the Contender Series.

When Sean O’Malley will be cleared to return, or who he will fight is to be seen.
