Rising star Sean O’Malley believes he is just a couple of fights away from becoming the bantamweight champion. O’Malley will be looking to pick up his second win since returning from his lengthy USADA imposed hiatus. Last time out he stopped Jose Quinonez inside one round at UFC 248 earlier this year to improve his perfect record to 11-0.
The 25-year-old was recently booked to face former title challenger Eddie Wineland at UFC 250. ‘Sugar’ says although his opponent is no longer a top contender, beating him will still solidify his reputation as the top prospect in MMA.
“I think it’s a perfect next step up, next match,” O’Malley told Luke Thomas. “Beating him, he’s not one of the top top guys right now but he’s a vet, he’s got a weird style, and I think beating him definitely shows I’m as good as I say I am. But it’s not like I’m beating someone in the top 10 right now, so I think I go out there, beat him, it shows that the hype is real, but I’ve still got a lot to prove.”
The UFC bantamweight title was made vacant earlier this week after Henry Cejudo confirmed his retirement from the sport. Four 135lb contenders are set to battle it out to become the next champion and O’Malley says it won’t be long before he is in line for a title shot.
“There’s four people they talk about for the bantamweight title,” he said. “No one is really standing out. No one is really like, ‘This is who we want to be our champ.’ I win a couple more fights, I’m that guy. I’m the guy that people are gonna want to see, the bantamweight champ. And I’m gonna go out there and perform like I did last time, against Eddie (Wineland), and whoever I fight next, I’m gonna go out there and do the same thing.
“I’m only a couple fights away from the title, because if you look at the rankings, they don’t really matter. You had Jose Aldo ranked, what, number six in the bantamweight division? He’s never even won. You had Dominick Cruz coming off a loss fight (for the belt). The rankings don’t matter. I think those top four dudes right now, (Aljamain) Sterling, (Petr) Yan, Cory (Sandhagen), and . . . Marlon (Moraes), those top four dudes are killers. They’re high level blackbelts in MMA. But no one is talking about them. No one is like, ‘That’s the dude.’ No one is that interested. I’m that guy. I’m the guy that’s going to come, knock these dudes out, get my title shot, and I’m gonna be champ. It’s gonna be people want to see me there, and it’s going to be exciting.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

The charismatic 25-year-old has since announced on his Twitch channel he expects to face Eddie Wineland next month, although the fight is not yet official it has been verbally agreed and contracts are due to be signed soon.
O’Malley last fought in March at UFC 248 and picked up an impressive TKO win inside two minutes against Jose Quiñones. This was the first ‘Suga Show’ in over two years after he became embroiled in a complex case with the United States Anti-Doping Agency. O’Malley was found to have ostarine in his system in the build-up to a scheduled fight at UFC 229. He was banned for six months for this violation. After serving his ban O’Malley was due to face Marlon Vera but was again pulled from the fight for a second violation, testing positive for ostarine for the second time. Although it seems likely the test result was a case of residual effects O’Malley was forced to serve another six-month ban form the sport.
Former UFC title challenger Wineland is the man tasked with upsetting the unbeaten young star. The 35-year-old bounced back from consecutive defeats against John Dodson and Aljeandro Perez last time out to beat Grigory Popov via TKO at UFC 238 almost a year ago.
Who do you think wins when Sean O’Malley squares off against Eddie Wineland at UFC 250 on June 6?
Sean O’Malley is not a fan of UFC bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo’s gimmick. Sean O’Malley is not a fan of UFC bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo’s gimmick.
Ever since becoming a champion in the UFC, Cejudo has embraced himself as the “King of Cringe” with a more outgoing and outspoken comedic personality. It has rubbed many people the wrong way in the process.
But what can’t be denied is Cejudo’s fighting ability as he has beaten the likes of Demetrious Johnson, TJ Dillashaw and Marlon Moraes in his last three outings. O’Malley acknowledged this but isn’t sure the cringe gimmick is really working out for the Olympian.
“I wouldn’t consider that working for him,” O’Malley told MMA Junkie. “I think he’s definitely trying, but he’s just trying too hard and it’s hard to watch. And I guess that’s the way they’re going for – the cringe – but I think he could have taken that a different route. I don’t know. I think as a champ, he’s beat some really, really good dudes. Yeah, he’s really good – but he’s just a cringey dude.”
Another criticism of Cejudo is that he only seems to be targeting big-name fighters coming off losses. He was initially set to defend his title against Jose Aldo at UFC 250 next month.
The plan now seems to be facing Dominick Cruz on the proposed May 9 card. And O’Malley feels there are more deserving contenders in the division who should be earning the next crack at the title.
“Yeah, it’s super weird,” O’Malley said. “That Jose Aldo fight, I definitely thought he won against Marlon (Moraes). … Dana’s like, ‘No, I thought he won that fight, I’ll give him a title shot.’ So it’s pretty cool Dana has that power and it’s his company, (but) it’s pretty weird coming off a loss.
“I mean, Cruz deserves it in a sense – all the injuries he’s had to deal with and how his career went, so I don’t know. I wouldn’t be upset with him getting it but there’s also guys like (Cory) Sandhagen and (Aljamain Sterling) that probably deserve it more, coming off wins. Yeah, that’s a tough one.”
As for O’Malley, he certainly has time on his side as the unbeaten prospect will no doubt be looking at targeting bantamweight gold in the future.
