Sean O’Malley set to appear before the NSAC in order to get some answers regarding his recent positive drug test.

As a result of this test that popped, it has halted his MMA career, which is a shame considering the current state of it. He’s a rising prospect under the UFC banner and one that fight fans have taken a liking to after making a name for himself.

If you recall, O’Malley failed an out-of-competition drug test conducted by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Now, he’s set to appear before the Nevada State Athletic Commission on November 14th for his hearing.

According to the agenda that was made available by the commission, this hearing is set to be focused on the disciplinary complaint. Or a proposed adjudication agreement. In more simple terms, it all comes down to representing a plea deal of sorts.

Sean O’Malley Looking To Get Answers

The reason is due to the rising prospect denying that he did anything wrong. Instead, he has expressed confidence he would be exonerated with the facts of the case.

Once he popped for the test, USADA gave him a temporary suspension and was pulled from a fight with Jose Quinonez at UFC 229. Now, along with USADA, the state athletic commission also has the ability to discipline him.

O’Malley told ESPN.com he had tested positive for ostarine. This is a banned selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) that’s turned up in several cases in the past. With him already being on the sidelines, he decided last month to undergo hip surgery to repair a nagging problem.

O’Malley last fight took place in March at the UFC 222 pay-per-view event. This is where he suffered a serious ankle injury to outpoint Andre Soukhamthath. This marked his second straight win inside of the Octagon. He was turned into a star once appearing on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series. As a result, he continued his undefeated record to 10-0.

Just a day after he is pulled from UFC 229, Sean O’Malley has revealed the banned substance he tested positive for.

Timing is everything. And for the UFC’s top bantamweight prospect ‘Suga’ Sean it couldn’t have been worse. O’Malley was pulled from his fight this weekend (Oct. 6, 2018) against Jose Quinoñez due to failed a drug test administered by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).

O’Malley broke the news himself on social media. He thought since the UFC will no longer reveal potential violations until the proceedings are complete he should get ahead of this and let his fans know the deal.

The Substance?

He further explained his position on the Ariel Helwani MMA Show, where he revealed exactly what he tested positive for.

“It’s called ostarine, I guess that’s the one that catches everyone that is kind of in all these random pills,” he said. “I feel like there has to be a new rule implemented or something because this has happened too many times.”

O’Malley expressed his anger at the situation, noting he would miss out on a big payday:

“It’s just not fair because I was about to go make a six-figure payday, my stock was about to go up and I was going to go knock this dude out in the first round. I am getting punished for something I didn’t do intentionally,” he added, while revealing caffeine pills could be at the root of the problem.”

He then detailed the reason why he thought he had tested positive for ostarine. He believes it was because of caffeine pills:

“I’m really hoping it’s these caffeine pills I took. I didn’t think anything of it. Obviously the ingredients on the caffeine pills are all USADA-approved, but what wasn’t in the ingredients is what I popped for, so it sucks.”

O’Malley’s fans

O’Malley will miss out on a huge payday. The biggest in his career by far. As for why “Suga” decided to be transparent about this entire situation that he knew 10 days ago? Karma.

“I had this guilty feeling in my stomach not to tell my fans why I am not fighting. No one knew, no one was releasing that I wasn’t fighting,” he said. “So I felt the need to. I am not to worried about people thinking I’m on steroids or trying to cheat. It’s just not me. I think the fans know deep down that I am not trying to cheat.”

O’Malley hopes to have this situation taken care of in a speedy fashion and hopes USADA will be lenient on him. “Suga” added, if snitching is involved, forget it.

A failed drug test has forced Sean O’Malley off UFC 229.

The rising bantamweight star announced on Instagram tonight (Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018) that he had failed a USADA-mandated drug test. The failure forced him off of his scheduled bout with Jose Quiñonez at this weekend’s UFC 229.

The UFC recently announced some changes to their current drug testing partnership with USADA. Perhaps the biggest change came in the form of fighter failures not being announced until their case was resolved. This was due to cases involving unintentional use tarnishing fighters’ reputations.

O’Malley said he’s currently dealing with such a case himself. He wanted to get ahead of the game as a result. ‘Sugar’ announced his current issue to fans. He claims he’s identified the dietary supplement which caused the failure:

O’Malley is maybe the UFC’s fastest-rising star at the lower weight divisions. He calls this setback only a “speed bump on the way to greatness,” but this is certain to be more than that as a result.

The well-liked prospect has built a large following in his first full year on the official UFC roster. He was fighting on by far his biggest card at UFC 229. Conor McGregor will be facing Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event. It’s tough to get a better card on which to gain exposure.

O’Malley is a highly-publicized user of marijuana. It’s unknown whether or not his failed drug test involves the oft-discussed use of cannabis. His words make it seem like it’s more of a performance-enhancing drug issue due to a tainted supplement.

He admitted he wanted to as open as possible even though his failure would have remained private under the new rules:

“Even though under the new policy, my case would not be public right now, I feel it’s important to be upfront and honest with my fans,” O’Malley wrote. … “We’ve sent remaining samples from the bottle I took to the USADA lab and [sic] as well as a full-sized bottle. I’m told the testing of these supplements can take as long as 30 days.”

“Sugar” won all three of his UFC bouts thus far. His most recent was a decision win over Andre Soukhamthath in March. He broke his foot and has been out since. His return on the UFC’s biggest-ever card will never materialize.

Another big-name talent is on the sidelines due to USADA regardless. Let’s hope it’s not for too long.
