Sean Sherk is set to make his UFC return later this year, but he isn’t looking to fight any chumps.

The former UFC lightweight champion hopes to jump right back into the mix of contenders seeking a world title shot. After months of silence regarding his fighting career, Sherk recently took to Twitter to officially announce his UFC return:

I will be coming back before the years end but I need a good fight not some chump who needs some fame!”

Sherk hasn’t competed since his controversial split decision victory over Evan Dunham in September 2010. After the win, he went on an extended hiatus to rehab several injuries.

At 38 years of age, Sherk can still make some noise in the lightweight division if he’s able to return to form. He’s a formidable striker and one of the best wrestlers in the world at 155-pounds.

Unfortunately, some will knock Sherk for his performance against Dunham, but people tend to forget that Dunham was on his way up the contender’s ladder before being knocked off by “The Muscle Shark.”

With that said, the lightweight division has seen a major growth in talent in the past couple of years. There are hardly any “chumps” at 155 pounds competing in the UFC.

An interesting return bout for Sherk would be against former title contender Gray Maynard. Since losing to Frankie Edgar at UFC 136, Maynard has been relatively quiet, and the UFC has yet to announce any future opponents.

Like Maynard, Sherk’s last professional loss came at the hands of Edgar in May 2009.

MMA News: Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos to Appeal Failed Drug Test

Former Strikeforce Women’s Featherweight Champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos will appeal her one-year long suspension handed down by the California State Athletic Commission at their next meeting, scheduled for April 9, according to MMA junkie.

CSAC Executive Director George Dodd confirmed the news on Monday when contacted by MMA junkie, though he also mentioned that an agenda for the meeting was not set yet.

Santos was suspended on January 6 when she failed a CSAC post-fight drug test for the anabolic steroid stanozolol.

Cyborg briefly improved her winning streak to 11 after knocking out title challenger Hiroko Yamanaka just 16 seconds into their Dec. 17 fight that took place in San Diego, California.

However, the result of the bout was changed to a no-contest and Cyborg was stripped of her title as a result of the positive drug test.

The female fighter took to her official website the next day offering an apology to the fans, although she ultimately blamed the failed drug test on an over-the-counter diet supplement, which she did not name.

A source from within Santos’ camp said the 26-year-old fighter hoped to have the length of her suspension reduced so that it will be possible to book her next fight.

In the past, fighters such as then UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk and then Strikeforce middleweight Phil Baroni, both in 2007, successfully appealed CSAC issued suspensions.

In both cases, the suspensions were cut down from one year to six months.

Whatever the reason, each weight class has had its fair share of bad champs.

Let’s take a look at the worst UFC champion from each weight class from lightweight through heavyweight.

WTF?! of the Day: Sean Sherk Mistaken for Crime Warlord, Temporarily Detained in UK

(This is what I get for offering them a ticket to The Gun Show.)

Oh, those wacky Brits. It appears that, while touring the UK as part of a MMA seminar tour, former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk was accidentally pegged in connection with a well known crime boss (our guess would be Salvatore Riina) when the vehicle he was riding in was stopped at a roadblock.

After a small misunderstanding, machine gun toting bobbies descended upon Sherk and forcefully removed him from the car, which they believed to be loaded with illegal firearms. Fighters Only has the exclusive:

As he was being ferried into the area, the car he was travelling in was stopped by a roadblock and armed police swooped on the vehicle. Police had the vehicle on their database as being linked to a local man who they believe to be a key gangland figure.

Sherk thought the car was being subjected to a routine stop until it turned out to involve several carloads of police officers carrying automatic weapons, including Hechler and Koch MP5 machine guns – the UK police do not normally carry guns.

Having remained sat in his passenger seat because he had not understood an instruction to exit the vehicle, Sherk was dragged out by tense officers. They cuffed his hands behind his back and pulled him away where he was none too gently searched before being dumped on the floor.

After finding no such weaponry in Sherk’s car, “The Muscle Shark” was sent on his way with nothing more than a hell of a foreign relations story to tweet to his army of Xenophobic followers.

The report also states that Sherk took the British blunder in “good spirits” but made note that “despite the widespread ‘village constable’ reputation that UK police have – the officers were much more aggressive and heavy-handed than what he has ever experienced in the US.” Apparently he doesn’t follow the news that closely.

Sean Sherk Dragged out of Car at Gun Point in UK Police Ordeal

Former UFC lightweight champion Sean “The Muscle Shark” Sherk might not have been expecting to be caught in the middle of a police ordeal while on a seminar trip in the UK, but that’s just what happened earlier this week, according to FightersOnlyMagazine.

According to the article, the car in which Sherk had been traveling near Huddersfield was “on their database as being linked to a local man who they believe to be a key gangland figure.”

Soon after being stopped by a roadblock and approached by “several carloads of police officers carrying automatic weapons, including Hechler and Koch MP5 machine guns,” Sherk was dragged from the car and handcuffed.

After the search for firearms was conducted, the police let Sherk and his driver leave.

Sherk took the incident in good spirits but it has changed his thoughts on the UK; he noted that – despite the widespread ‘village constable’ reputation that UK police have – the officers were much more aggressive and heavy-handed than what he has ever experienced in the US.

Since Sherk’s last fight in the Octagon over a year ago, the 38-year-old has been rehabilitating from several injuries and attending seminars. This event may have him second-guessing his career outside the cage, and just may make him fighting in the UFC sooner than later.

Sherk has only fought twice since 2009 and is 1-1 in his last two. All of his losses are to current or former UFC champions.
