PRIDE/WEC veteran Paulo Filho was hospitalized this morning in São Gonçalo, Brazil, after he suffered an apparent seizure before a scheduled fight last night. According to MMAFighting’s Guilherme Cruz, Filho was slated to take on UFC veteran Amilcar Alves in the main event of Fatality Arena 7, but was pulled from the bout just hours before it was supposed to take place.
At one time, Filho was considered one of the greatest middleweights in the world, with a perfect 8-0 PRIDE record and a WEC championship belt leading his list of accomplishments. His bizarre loss to Chael Sonnen at WEC 36 in November 2008 was a turning point. Since then, Filho has become notorious for everything from drug addiction, insanetattoos, abrupt firings, and a recent string of losses; Filho has only scored a single victory in his last seven matches. And now this seizure crap, as if he needed any more problems in his life. Get well soon, Ely.

Last week, TUF Brazil 1 winner Rony Jason made dumbass headlines when he elbowed a wall backstage following his UFC Fight Night 32 loss to Jeremy Stephens, subsequently injuring himself and catching a suspension from the Brazilian MMA commission for unsportsmanlike conduct. It turns out that the incident was actually captured on video by Dana White’s personal cameraman, and included in the new UFC 167 Danavlog, which you can watch above.
“Elbowed a wall” is putting it lightly — Jason obliterates the damn thing with the kind of strike that would have been nice to land during the actual fight. The event staff immediately notices that he’s cut, and lead him away to tend to his wound.
Other than that, this installment of the Danavlog is filled with the kind of emotional post-fight moments and Baldfather hijnix you’ve come to expect from these things, although there is one more very notable scene. If you were among the people who thought that the Belfort vs. Henderson fight was stopped early — and Dan Henderson himself was one of those people — please skip to the 8:49 mark to see Hendo’s leg convulsing against the cage. Yeah. That’s a knockout, guys.
I’m actually a little surprised that the UFC would include such a grisly, unflattering moment in one of their official videos, but I commend them for it. This is the sport we love, and we all need to deal with the consequences.

Oh, so you didn’t find Jacob Volkmann‘s latest win at WSOF 3 completely thrilling? Well, nuts to you and your judgement, hot shot, because it turns out that “Dr. Feelgood” may have had a near-death experience the very same day the fight went down.
According to a recent interview Volkmann did with Sherdog, the lightweight blacked out, hit his head and had seizures on the floor of his Las Vegas hotel room before weighing in for his fight against Lyle Beerbohm. Volkmann, a chiropractor, decided to not tell anyone, weigh-in and fight anyway.
Goodness gracious.
“The maid knocks on my door and keeps on knocking, and I [thought], ‘I’d better not get up too fast.’ So I got up and walked toward the door, and by the time I got my hand on the door, I blacked out,” Volkman told Sherdog. “Next thing I remember, I was shaking on the floor, having seizures.”
“I banged my head, and I must have hit my back on the door handle,” Volkmann went on. “I didn’t tell anybody, because I didn’t want them to say I couldn’t fight because I just had a seizure. I had bills to pay, so I really didn’t have a choice.”
Off the record, Volkmann then proceeded to call Phillipe Nover a “complete pussy, even for a male nurse, bro.”

Fighting really is a tough way to make a living, folks. Not only did Volkmann feel the need to conceal his experience, he says that even now he won’t necessarily seek medical treatment.
“Mentally and physically, I felt fine. I didn’t feel cloudy. I kind of did a self-analysis based on my medical background. I just wanted to make sure that my cognitive was there and my mental state was up to par,” said Volkmann. “I was mentally able to fight, still. The thing about chiropractic education is that the first two years are the same as an M.D.’s education. You just branch off after two years.
“It was a byproduct of being dehydrated. I don’t think I need a CAT scan or [anything],” Volkmann said. “There’s nothing cloudy. My memory is fine. I don’t feel sluggish at all. I’m good to go.”
We give Volkmann grief from time to time for being a loudmouth, whining goofball outside of the cage, but we must not forget that when it comes to the business of training and fighting, the man formerly known as “Christmas” is a top fighter and a straight OG gangster.
I’ve heard plenty of horror stories that come as a result of a weight cut gone bad in mixed martial arts. Most fighters who undertake a weight cut have done so before. They’ve wrestled since they were kids, and while cutting weight at the junior or high school level is mostly frowned upon, the practice […]

This knockout from an unidentified and undated muay thai event video is as nasty as any we’ve seen.

This knockout from an unidentified and undated muay thai event video is as nasty as any we’ve seen. The perfectly executed straight right, shin to the face combo renders the victim unconscious and makes him look like he suffers from cerebral palsy or epilepsy.
