Moments after his Octagon debut at UFC 116, Ricardo Romero was back in the locker room of the MGM Grand washing the blood off his body and doing a little damage assessment.

He couldn’t close his jaw all the way, so he was pretty sure that was broken. When he tried to lift his arm a sharp pain shot through his chest, indicating that something was probably damaged in there. His knee was also starting to stiffen up, making even the act of standing in the shower seem increasingly dicey.

“I was just thinking, this is going to be a really fun trip back home,” Romero recalled with a chuckle.

Romero would leave Las Vegas after his first UFC fight with a broken jaw, torn pectoral muscle, and sprained knee. He also left a winner, which might be the most amazing part, especially considering what a horrible start he got off to against MMA veteran Seth Petruzelli that night.

After finishing 10th out of over 2500 competitors in last week’s World Series of Poker, UFC fighter Mike Swick must be feeling pretty lucky. Either that, or he was not intimidated by my 0-3 record in Writer vs. Fighter and saw a chance for an easy victory. Whatever the reason, Swick was gracious enough to agree to face me in a UFC 116 prediction contest this afternoon, and for that I thank him.

I may have gotten smoked by “Babalu” Sobral in last week’s match-up, but I’m trying to stay positive. I figure it can only help me that I got Swick to make his predictions after he’d stayed up until 5 a.m. playing poker in Las Vegas, where he says he’s been doing “very well.”

Well Mr. Swick, prepare to have your fortunes changed. Maybe. Hopefully.

Amid all the hoopla surrounding the heavyweight title fight at UFC 116 this weekend, it’s easy to forget that while some fighters are competing for glory and lucrative paydays, others are just fighting for survival.

Hardly a UFC event goes by without at least one or two of the losers getting quietly cut from the roster a few days later. Their contracts may still have three fights left on them, but one bad performance (or just consecutive losing ones), and suddenly that piece of paper is good for little more than bird cage lining.

So who could be facing make-or-break moments at UFC 116, and who’s most likely to join the swollen ranks of America’s unemployed after this weekend? Let’s take a look after the jump.

Seth Petruzelli isn’t kidding himself. Despite the four-fight win streak he’s accumulated since his last run in the UFC ended in 2007, he knows that there’s one win in particular that is more responsible than the rest for his return to the Octagon at UFC 116 this Saturday.

And no, it isn’t his first-round TKO of 9-18 fighter Sean Sallee, or even his most recent victory via submission over 5-5 Ryan White.

“Obviously, the Kimbo [Slice] win helped tremendously,” Petruzelli (12-4) told MMA Fighting. “Without that, I think it would have taken a few more wins for me to get back in the UFC.”

Steve Cofield from Yahoo! Sports caught up with Seth "The Promotion Killer" Petruzelli in Las Vegas last week ahead of his UFC 116 return bout with Ricardo Romero and discussed a variety of topics including his sexual leanings, his planned entrance for the show (which will include a midget) and the fact that beating Kimbo hurt his career more so than it helped it.

UFC middleweight Tom Lawlor may be the one who’s gotten all the attention for weigh-in antics and entertaining pre-fight entrances that seem to exist somewhere in the space between parody and performance art, but he didn’t pull them off alone.

If you look closely at the human dog Lawlor lead around on a leash before UFC 100, or the terrified training partner he dropped with a Dan Severn takedown during the UFC 113 weigh-ins, that’s where you’ll see Seth Petruzelli‘s contribution to these great moments in pre-fight fun.

So when Petruzelli makes his return to the Octagon at UFC 116 next weekend, you better believe he’s going to call in a favor or two from Lawlor.
