Bellator has lined up two heavyweight matchups, Cole Konrad vs. Paul Buentello and Ricco Rodriguez vs. Seth Petruzelli, for Bellator 48 on Aug. 20 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

Bellator 48 will be the third and final 2011 Summer Series events and is expected to feature the finals of the featherweight tournament which kicked off this past Saturday.

The Konrad vs. Buentello non-title fight was originally announced for Bellator 42 in April, but Buentello would later withdraw due to a back injury. Konrad, who won all seven of his fights in 2010 en route to becoming the Bellator heavyweight champion, will be fighting for the first time this year.

Rodriguez and Petruzelli will both be making their Bellator debuts. Although Bellator is billing this as a heavyweight bout, the agreed upon catchweight is 230 pounds,
according to Petruzelli. Petruzelli was released from the UFC after his loss at UFC 122 last November and scored a TKO this year at WEF 46 in April. Never fighting for the same promotion in a row, Rodriguez has won his last 11 fights.

Booking Alert: Rodriguez-Petruzelli, Buentello-Konrad Added to Bellator 48 Card

“I’m going to beat you so bad you’ll look like you were in a car wreck. Then I’m going to drag you over to the driver’s seat and run away into the night.”

With their featherweight tourney already underway, Bellator would like to remind you that they’ve got some big boys that can throw down too. Two fights have been announced for their upcoming Bellator 48 card, going down on August 20th.

With their featherweight tourney already underway, Bellator would like to remind you that they’ve got some big boys that can throw down too. Two fights have been announced for their upcoming Bellator 48 card, going down on August 20th.

One of MMA’s most tortured souls, Ricco Rodriguez, will return to the spotlight against Seth Petruzelli in a catchweight bout of 230lbs. Rodriguez, you may recall, picked up his 11th straight victory over TUF alum James McSweeney at Bamma 5 before suffering a TKO loss (arrest) to the Ahwatukee Police Department last month. Petruzelli recently righted his ship with a victory over Dave Mewborn at WEF 46. Prior to that win, he lost two in a row before being cut by the UFC.

Also slated for the card is the rescheduled bout between Cole Konrad and Paul Buentello. This fight was originally scheduled for Bellator 42, but a back injury forced “The Head Hunter” from the event. Fully recovered, he’ll finally get to lock horns with the impossibly boring Bellator Season 5 champion. There’s no doubt that Konrad will be looking for takedowns early and often, but the question remains: is it because he fears Buentello, or because he fears the consequences?

Stephan Bonnar to Fight Karlos Vemola! In Other News…Who is Karlos Vemola?

Stephan Bonnar seems to be the US Representative of the UFC as he is now set to fight Karlos Vemola, a Czechoslovakian fighter who won a TKO victory over Seth Petruzelli at UFC 122 back in November. Stephan Bonnar seems to be the US Representative of the UFC as he is now set to fight Karlos Vemola, a Czechoslovakian fighter who won a TKO victory over Seth Petruzelli at UFC 122 back in November. This will be Bonnar’s third match-up against a European fighter (fourth if you include the back-to-back Krzysztof Soszynski fights). Bonnar tweeted about the upcoming UFC on Versus 5 tilt from his TrashTalkinKids account today:

“Who is karlos vermola? That’s ez, Bonnar’s next fight! Just released @Jon_anik and @ngaugeinc are the first 2 know. yeah dewd!!!”

We always appreciate Bonnar’s sense of humor and his inference that he doesn’t know who the f*@# Karlos Vemola is either. It’s good to see Bonnar’s have-fun-with-it attitude at this point in his career. I mean, what the hell, right? It’s a fight!

And Now He’s Fired: Seth Petruzelli

It looks like the post-UFC 122 cuts just keep coming.

Five Ounces of Pain is reporting that Seth Petruzelli has been dropped by the UFC after being finished for the second time in as many fights in his most recent stint in the Octagon.

30-year-old Petruzelli (12-6 MMA, 0-4 UFC), who lost by TKO to Karlos Vemola at the event in Oberhausen, Germany 10 days ago and was also submitted  by Ricardo Romera at UFC 116 in July in his first fight back since being dropped by the promotion originally in 2007 joins fellow UFC 122 losers Peter Sobotta and Goran Reljic on the unemployement line. Both fighters were also given their pink slips by the promotion because of their respective three-fight losing skids.

UFC 122 Predictions

Nate Marquardt vs Yushin Okami I don’t see Okami posing any threat to Marquardt other than maybe winning a decision, not that this couldn’t happen it could. Nate Marquardt vs Yushin Okami

I don’t see Okami posing any threat to Marquardt other than maybe winning a decision, not that this couldn’t happen it could. Marquardt on the other hand has the power to finish Okami inside three rounds. I like Marquardt here.

Jorge Rivera vs Alessio Sakara

This is the second billing fight and is a smart card for a free Spike TV showing. Rivera likes to stay on his feet and of course Sakara does as well. I like Rivera here.

Dennis Siver vs Andre Winner

Both guys have great boxing, Winner has better. Siver has some deadly leg kicks and his sidekick and back fist he uses quite a bit. Andre Winner though I could see putting a pounding on Siver without taking him out until the judge’s decision. Winner via decision.

Amir Sadollah vs Peter Sobotta

Amir Sadollah. UFC likes to showcase him.

Krzysztof Soszynski vs Goran Reljic

In the battle of eastern block names, I like Goran Reljic in this one. However, if Goran gets on his back, Soszynski probably does his key lock.

Kyle Noke vs Rob Kimmons

I’ll ride with Noke. Seemed tough on the show.

Vladimir Matyushenko vs Alexandre Ferreira

Vlad.

Duane Ludwig vs Nick Osipczak

In this match Ludwig is a 2-1 underdog here. I like Ludwig to win and with these odds seems like a no brainer.

Seth Petruzelli vs Karlos Vemola

Petruzelli via ridge hand.

For a pro fighter, a lot of things seem atypical about Ricardo Romero. First off, as he tells Old Dad in an interview with MMA Fighting on Monday, Romero’s MMA career still plays second fiddle to his day job as an energy derivatives broker on Wall Street. Secondly, he admits he only started training to fight as a way to get over the depression of breaking up with his baby mama. Lastly, and most of interest to us here at the Potato, Romero managed to overcome a laundry list of injuries suffered during his UFC debut in July to defeat Seth Petruzelli by second-round arm bar.

Romero pretty much got the tar beat out of him for the first five-plus minutes of his bout against Petruzelli. Despite a 10-1 record compiled fighting on New Jersey’s independent scene – including victories over some known names like the UFC’s James McSweeney as well as TUF washouts Constantinos Phillippou and Karen Grigoryan  – Romero looked completely unprepared for UFC action. He was “Octagon jitters” personified and his honesty on that subject is something else that is refreshing about the former Rutgers wrestler.
