Curtis Blaydes vs. Shamil Abdurakhimov in a heavyweight bout continues the main card of the UFC 242 event: 

Round 1: Blaydes comes right out of the gate and dragged him down to the floor. He stayed on him as Abdurakhimov stood back up to his feet before Blaydes took him down within a minute of the round. Abdurakhimov managed to get back to his feet moments later and they were striking. Blaydes drove him back down to the floor. Blaydes got the full mount and rained down some monster strikes to end the round. 

Round 2: They had a nice striking exchange until Blaydes caught him with an uppercut and took him down where he got half guard. Blaydes started to rain down big shots until the referee stepped in for the stoppage.

A heavyweight bout between Curtis Blaydes and Shamil Abdurakhimov has been finalized for UFC 242 which takes place September 7 in Abu Dhabi.

It was reported earlier this month by Farah Hannoun that the two heavyweights were close to finalizing their bout. According to Abdurakhimov, he had signed his part of the agreement and was waiting on Blaydes. Just over a week since, it is now made official.

Blaydes bounced back from a second defeat to Francis Ngannou late last year by comfortably outpointing Justin Willis. He will now look to make it two wins in a row and continue to stake a claim for a title shot.

As for Abdurakhimov, he has been on a recent tear. Following his knockout loss to Derrick Lewis in 2016, the Russian has won three in a row. His recent wins include knockouts of Chase Sherman and Marcin Tybura, as well as a decision win over former champion Andrei Arlovski.

The announcement comes after the main event of UFC 242 was recently made official as Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier will collide in a lightweight title unification clash.

A heavyweight bout between Curtis Blaydes and Shamil Abdurakhimov is close to being finalized for UFC 242.

A recent report from Farah Hannoun about the matchup was verified by Abdurakhimov on Instagram on Friday. He claims he has signed his part of the contract and is waiting for Blaydes to make it official.

The Russian has won his last three fights as well as five of his last six. His victims include Marcin Tybura, Andrei Arlovski and Walt Harris. As a result, he is currently ranked No. 10 in the rankings.

As for Blaydes, he recently bounced back from his second defeat to Francis Ngannou with a dominant unanimous decision victory over Justin Willis earlier this year. The Illinois native has won five of his last six bouts and is currently ranked No. 4 in the rankings. He also holds wins over Alistair Overeem, Mark Hunt and Aleksei Oleinik.

UFC 242 takes place September 7 in Abu Dhabi and is expected to be headlined by a title unification clash between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier. It is not official, however.
