Burgos, who improved to 7-0 in the promotion whilst fighting in his home state earlier this month, managed to find himself on the winning side of a close, majority decision win against fellow division standout, Charles Jourdain.

In the midst of a two-fight winning run, Burgos previously featured at Madison Square Garden back in October of last year at UFC 268, the Bronx native defeated Billy Quarantillo with an impressive unanimous decision win.

Dana White welcomed the opportunity to ink a new contract with Shane Burgos

Entering free agency off the back of his contractual obligations completions against Jourdain at UFC on ABC 3, Burgos, who remains open to the possibility of re-upping with the organization – amid welcomes from UFC president, Dana White, noting his willingness to fight at MSG in November once more.

“Before the end of the year, I would love to be back – before the end of the year,” Shane Burgos told LowKick MMA reporter, Michael Owens. “I don’t know the exact date – November 12., they (the UFC) have that MSG (Madison Square Garden) show (UFC 281) – but I’m not opposed to fighting outside the state (of New York) at all.”

“I’ve done it seven times, I’m 7-0 in New York which is awesome, I love to be able to say that,” Shane Burgos continued. “My favorite part about fighting in Long Island, was fighting at 2:30 p.m. – that was f*cking awesome. … If you’re gonna put me in New York, give me the early time slots.”

Weighing up his next opponent following prior callouts of both Dan Ige and veteran division contender, Chan Sung Jung, Burgos labelled a potential fight the streaking, Arnold Allen in the UK a “banger”.

“That would be a banger, that would be a banger,” Shane Burgos said. “… That would be f*cking wild – in a football stadium, too. That would get my blood pumping.”

15-3 as a professional, during his Octagon tenure which began back in December 2016, Burgos has landed other promotional wins against Tiago Trator, Charles Rosa, Godofredo Pepey, Kurt Holobaugh, Cub Swanson, and Makwan Amirkhani.

Coming off a win over Billy Quarantillo at UFC 268, Burgos was looking to add another win to his column after rebounding from two prior losses against Jourdain. They clashed met tonight’s UFC on ABC 3 main card at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.

Jourdain and Burgos went right into it in front of a roaring crowd. Burgos used his pressure to his advantage to get Jourdain’s back. Jourdain did well to survive initially getting out of submission attempts in the first round. He made a comeback in the last round and almost got a finish but Burgos did enough to survive in the thriller.

Rebounding to the winner’s enclosure following a third career defeat, Shane Burgos, a native of The Bronx, most recently featured on home soil at UFC 268 in November at Madison Square Garden, defeating Billy Quarantillo in a unanimous decision showing. Both Burgos and Quarantillo were heralded post-fight for their Fight of the Year contender showing.

Landing his second consecutive victory at UFC Vegas 52, Jourdain managed to stop the wily, Lando Vannata with an impressive opening round guillotine victory. The win came as Jourdain’s thirteenth professionally.

Eurosport reporter, Marcel Dorff was first to report the location and date of Burgos’ matchup with Jourdain, with Cageside Press reporter, Alex Behunin previously reporting the promotion’s intention to book the two featherweight contenders opposite each other.

Prior to his win over Quarantillo, Shane Burgos battled over the course of two gruelling rounds against Muay Thai ace, Edson Barboza, before dropping an early third round knockout defeat in one of the most bizarre finishing sequences in recent memory.

Touted as a major player at 145lbs, Burgos’ other professional defeats have come against division striking aces, Josh Emmett, and Calvin Kattar – while notching impressive wins of his own against Charles Rosa, Cub Swanson, and Makwan Amirkhani.

A proficient finisher, Jourdain has managed to land eight knockout successes to go with a further four submission wins over the course of his 18 fight professional career.

Landing in the UFC back in May 2019 in ‘The Big Apple’ to boot, Jourdain has since scored a quartet of Octagon successes, defeating the above mentioned, Vannata, Andre Ewell, Marcelo Rojo, and Choi Doo Ho.

Multiple sources confirmed the planned booking to Cageside Press’ Alex Behunin last month, with UFC 276 being reported as the targeted date. On Thursday, Eurosport’s Marcel Dorff confirmed that the matchup will take place in New York two weeks after International Fight Week.

Sharing the news on Twitter, Burgos wrote, “And we’re back.”

Burgos (14-2), who is currently ranked #14 at 145 pounds, is rarely, if ever, in a boring fight. Despite being 1-2 across his last three appearances, “Hurricane” never fails to entertain, even in defeat.

After going 6-1 in his first seven Octagon outings, a run of form that included wins against Cub Swanson and Makwan Amirkhani, and a sole defeat to now-top-five contender Calvin Kattar, Burgos fell to consecutive losses for the first time in his professional career. Following a narrow defeat to Josh Emmett in one of 2020’s Fight of the Year contenders, a knockout loss to Edson Barboza, remembered for the freakish nature of the KO, made it back-to-back setbacks.

In yet another entertaining three-round war, Burgos returned to the win column last time out at UFC 268, outpointing fellow fan favorite Billy Quarantillo. In the 31-year-old’s way of a two-fight win streak could be Jourdain (13-4-1).

After an underwhelming start to his UFC career, which saw him go 2-3-1 in his first six appearances, Jourdain has hit his best form yet, winning two in a row inside the Octagon for the first time. Having rebounded with an emphatic decision victory over Andre Ewell last December, the Canadian opened his 2022 account with an impressive first-round submission triumph against 12-fight UFC vet Lando Vannata at UFC Vegas 52 last month.

While Burgos will be looking to maintain his place on the featherweight ladder on July 16, Jourdain will be hoping to add a number next to his name. Although they may have different goals for UFC Long Island, both will be targeting another memorable contest, and perhaps one that will be worthy of a $50,000 FOTN bonus.
