Shinya Aoki and Chatri Sityodtong

The relationship between Japanese MMA icon Shinya Aoki and ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong has seen better days.

On Sunday, Aoki returned to the ring at ONE 165 in his home country expecting to square off with ‘Super’ Sage Northcutt. Instead, ‘Tobikan Judan’ ended up fighting former ONE bantamweight world champion John Lineker in a remarkably short-notice openweight MMA bout. Given their significant size difference and opposing skill sets, Aoki made quick work of Lineker, earning a first-round submission via neck crank.

Following the bout, Aoki spoke with ONE commentator Mitch Chilson in the ring where he was asked about why he accepted the fight with Lineker. “Since he asked me to, there was no other choice, but to do it,” Aoki said, the “he” referring to Sityodtong.

However, it appeared as though Aoki had said something else that the translator either missed altogether or chose to omit. According to X user @puraiya, the former ONE lightweight titleholder shared his disdain for the promotion’s founder in his comments to the live crowd.

“When my relationship to Chatri, a man I thought of as a friend, became one of “boss and employee”, I really came to f*cking hate him… but when that guy asks something of me, I guess I have no choice.”

We can’t confirm the 100% accuracy of the translation provided, but during Aoki’s post-fight interview, there was a very noticeable moment of awkward silence from the crowd, indicating that he had said something more than what the translator revealed.

Fans tuning in and sharing their thoughts on social media were seemingly clued into what Aoki was saying.

One wrote, “I love how much the translator was stuttering trying to figure out what to say,” while another added, “I realized the awkward silence of the crowd for a sec.”

Chatri Sityodtong Has a History of Disrespecting Japanese Fighters Despite Desperately Trying to Break into the Market

It’s unclear what the issue, if any, is between Aoki and Sityodtong, but could it have something to do with the CEO’s continued disrespect towards Japanese fighters as a whole.

“The biggest challenge for Japan is… If you look at the last several years, it doesn’t matter which discipline, Japanese fighters come into ONE and they get crushed,” Sityodtong said in a post-fight press conference. In order for ONE Championship to blow up in Japan, we need the best of the best in Japan — K-1, Rise, RIZIN — they’re the best in Japan, but when they come to ONE Championship, they lose. If you look at the Japanese record, there’s a lot of losses in ONE.”

Sityodtong also kickstarted a war of words with K-1 producer Carlos Kikuta after the ONE CEO shot down the possibility of co-promoting an event with K-1, saying, “It’s a tiny organization and the level is very low.”

The victory came as Northcutt’s sophomore outing under the banner of the Chatri Sityodtong-led banner, having suffered a devastating 29-second KO loss to Brazilian kickboxing ace, Cosmo Alexandre back in 2019, suffering multiple facial fractures in the first round loss, sidelining him for over three years.

As for Aoki, the veteran Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu icon has been sidelined himself from mixed martial arts since November of last year, dropping his second consecutive loss in the form of a first round knockout loss to Saygid Izagakhmaev, which came off the back of a TKO loss to compatriot, Yoshihiro ‘Sexyama’. January’s outing with Northcutt is expected to come as Aoki’s final in mixed martial arts competition.

Sage Northcutt takes on Shinya Aoki at ONE Championship 165

Sage Northcutt will no longer be competing at ONE On TNT IV.

Northcutt was set to make his highly-anticipated return against former ONE lightweight champion Shinya Aoki at the event taking place April 28 in Singapore. However, that is no longer the case as the former UFC prospect is suffering from lingering effects of COVID-19 as per ESPN.

It’s a big blow for Northcutt who hasn’t competed since May 2019 when he was brutally knocked out by Cosmo Alexandre in his ONE debut.

The 25-year-old was looking to make a splash in his comeback and earn his first win at the promotion in the process, but that will have to wait for now.

As for Aoki, he will remain on the card and battle Eduard Folayang instead.

It will be a trilogy fight with their first two meetings being lightweight title clashes that saw both fighters earn one win apiece. Their most recent meeting was in March 2019 when Aoki submitted Folayang to become the lightweight champion at the time.

Folayang was originally set to take on Yoshihiro Akiyama but the latter had to withdraw due to injury.

Sage Northcutt will be back in action soon.

The former UFC prospect will return to the cage when he faces former ONE lightweight champion Shinya Aoki on April 28. Officials informed ESPN’s Ariel Helwani of the booking before Northcutt confirmed it himself in a chat with the former.

The bout will be contested in ONE’s lightweight division which has a 170-pound limit.

Northcutt hasn’t competed since May 2019 when he suffered a brutal first-round knockout at the hands of Cosmo Alexandre in his promotional debut. That bout took place at welterweight (185 pounds) with Northcutt facing a bigger and much more experienced opponent in Alexandre.

It also snapped a three-fight winning streak for Northcutt who will now be looking to return to the win column in his old division and earn arguably the biggest victory of his career against Aoki.

Aoki is on a three-fight winning streak following victories over Honorio Banario, Kimihiro Eto and James Nakashima. In total, he has won seven of his last eight fights with his only loss being a TKO defeat to current ONE lightweight champion Christian Lee.

In addition to being a former ONE lightweight champion, the Japanese legend is also a former DREAM and Shooto champion.

What do you think of this fight? Is Aoki too experienced for Northcutt?
