Strikeforce Lives On for Now, But Will Lose Heavyweight Division and Challengers Series

(You know what? I still think Chad Griggs could have whipped all your asses.)

Strikeforce put out a press release today announcing their contract renewal with premium cable channel Showtime, which officially begins with the Rockhold vs. Jardine event on January 7th. Under the terms of the new agreement, Showtime will produce and televise up to eight live events, and will also begin broadcasting undercard fights on Showtime Extreme.

Said Dana White: “We’re excited about this renewal with Showtime and I expect to put on some big Strikeforce events next year. I never thought I would say this, but I am very much looking forward to building Strikeforce and working very closely with Showtime.”

According to the press release, the winner of the World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament (either Josh Barnett or Daniel Cormier) will compete again on Showtime under the Strikeforce banner in the months to follow. But after that, the reign of big men in Strikeforce will be history.

Scott Coker confirmed during a media call this afternoon that the heavyweight GP winner’s follow-up fight will be the last heavyweight match in Strikeforce. After that, the promotion will be focusing on lighter weight classes and the women’s divisions. Filling their championship vacancies at 170 and 205 will also be a priority: “When you think about the fights we’re having Saturday and in January, it’ll eventually lead to title fights in the weight classes,” Coker said. “We’ll put fights together and work toward titles in those divisions.”

Also on the chopping block? The Strikeforce Challengers series, which never made a whole lot of sense to us anyway — and would serve even less of a purpose if those lower-tier fighters can now be featured on prelim broadcasts of larger events. [Ed. note: We’ll have Moles start working on an emotional farewell piece.]

Current Strikeforce fighters – including champions Gilbert Melendez, Luke Rockhold, Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos and Miesha Tate – will remain in Strikeforce, meaning that the UFC’s talent-poaching may come to an end. Gilbert Melendez is reportedly excited about that.

So, business not quite as usual — but if you’re Scott Coker, a downsized product is better than no product at all. Stay tuned…

LAS VEGAS — Strikeforce isn’t quite dead yet.

Following a recent shakeup at Showtime that saw former sports head Ken Hershman leave for HBO, it seems that there is a renewed hope that the premium cable network might be able to strike a deal with Strikeforce.

So far, there’s been at least one change to the ongoing negotiations. While they had previously been handled by Zuffa co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta, White has taken the reigns in search of a new deal.

“I was in New York [Wednesday] and met with Showtime,” White said following a UFC 137 press conference on the Brooklyn Bridge replica outside the New York New York Hotel. “That’s why I was there. So yeah, I’m it now. I took over.”

White said he was able to inject himself into the situation now that Hershman is gone. The two have had a notoriously rocky history over the years, with White pulling no punches over his thoughts on Hershman. Even now that the executive has moved on, White did the same, saying dealing with the channel has gotten a lot easier now that he’s gone.

Why?

“Because he’s an idiot, and the rest of the guys aren’t,” he said.

As of now though, there is still no deal. So for the time being, reports of other Strikeforce fighters — Fabricio Werdum, for example — defecting to the UFC will come to a close. The timeframe for a decision has been extended as the two sides attempt to keep the promotion alive past the first quarter of 2012. But at least there is a newfound sense of optimism involved.

“I had a great meeting with them,” he said. “We’ll see how it goes. I met with all of them, the whole crew. It went very well, and we’ll see how it progresses.”

Viacom’s Purchase of Bellator Fallout: Four Overlooked Things That Will Likely Happen Because of the Deal

(Well, at least *some* of the inevitable changes will be good.)

When it was announced today that media giant Viacom had purchased Bellator Fighting Championships, most of us probably overlooked the bigger picture of what the deal means to the landscape of MMA. At a glance, better financial backing and being on a more popular channel like Spike means better fights and bigger paychecks for fighters, but behind the scenes the scope of the deal is likely much bigger than we know and the aftershocks will be felt for some time.

Check out four of the biggest likelihoods that will come out of the purchase after the jump.

Strikeforce and Showtime part ways:

Before all of you business experts begin furiously typing that Showtime isn’t technically affiliated with Viacom, keep in mind that a majority of the specialty channel is still owned by media mogul Sumner Redstone, whose family also owns CBS and he still remains on the board of directors. As such, it’s unlikely that one of the networks under the Redstone umbrella would give a leg up to the competition, meaning that Strikeforce is likely dust in the wind by the end of the year.

MMA on CBS again:

There’s a very good chance that CBS was using Chuck Liddell’s appearance on Hawaii Five-O this week as a litmus test to gauge the popularity of the sport with its viewership to see if signing with a promotion would be in its best interest. Although the ratings aren’t back yet for the episode, the fact that CBS’s PR department was pushing the episode to the MMA media pretty hard the past few weeks means they wanted the show to do well and were making sure it did. It’s no coincidence that they prominently displayed the ProElite cage and logos throughout Chuck’s cameo on the show. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire and it would have been just as easy for the show to cover up the PE logo or use a generic cage, so there’s a pretty good chance that the promotion is on the cusp of that deal with CBS we talked about a few months back. Now that all of the cards are down, we can probably expect an announcement in the following weeks that a deal that compliments ProElite’s newly announced broadcasting contract with HDNet is in place.

Spike gets back into the MMA reality series game:

Although no easy task, there’s a good chance that we will see Spike pick up where they left off with The Ultimate Fighter and begin producing a new original series to go hand-and-hand with Bellator programming on the channel. The challenge will be coming up with something fresh and new that won’t get stale. Maybe they should take our advice and put both opponents for an upcoming bout in the same fighter house and let nature take its course.

Counter-programmingpalooza:

Both Spike and the UFC have proven that they can be spiteful by attempting to sabotage the competition by airing replays of big fights as a calculated counter-programming measure. Dana White has said that he’s not at war with Bjorn Rebney, but since BR is no longer the primary owner of Bellator, all bets are off. Expect “The Baldfather” to switch to Berzerker mode like he did with Affliction and ProElite 1.0 when both promotions announced that they would be going head-to-head with the UFC. Things are going to get interesting shortly.

Worth noting is the fact that Spike still owns the primary broadcasting rights to a portion of the UFC library and considering that they aren’t planning on moving Bellator over from MTV2 until 2013, there’s a pretty good chance that they will be wringing every last drop of blood out of the contract before it expires.
