After Daniel Cormier was knocked out by Stipe Miocic at UFC 241 to lose the heavyweight title, many wondered what was next. He could retire, or if he wanted another fight the Miocic trilogy is there, as well as a possible Jon Jones trilogy.

According to Cain Velasquez, one of ‘DC’s’ friends, he believes the 40-year-old wants the Miocic trilogy.

“You know what, he really hasn’t told me what he wants to do, and I didn’t ask him,” Velasquez said to MMA Junkie. “It was somewhat close to his fight, and my prayers are with his family. He just lost his dad, so he’s in that whole state.

“I believe he wants to come back and fight Stipe. If he wants to do that, then I’m 100 percent behind him.”

The trilogy fight with Miocic would no doubt be an interesting fight for Daniel Cormier. He was having success in the fight and was up 30-27 on two of the judge’s scorecards entering the fourth round. Yet, he stopped using his wrestling and got rocked and finished on the feet.

For Cain Velasquez, he believes Daniel Cormier can beat Stipe Miocic and will be behind him if he decides to return again.

“I believe he can go out there and beat Stipe, for sure,” Velasquez said. “I think he has all the tools, and if he really wants to do that, he can, but he doesn’t have to prove anything to anybody, I don’t think, but this is a decision that he has to make, and he will. Once he does, whether he wants to not do it anymore or get that one fight again, I’m 100 percent behind him, and I’m always supporting him.”

But, the major question is, will Daniel Cormier fight again is a major one.

Dana White Open To Stipe Miocic vs. Daniel Cormier 3

After Stipe Miocic TKO’d Daniel Cormier in the main event of UFC 241, it evened up the series at 1-1. So, logically, a trilogy bout would make sense. However, the fighting future of ‘DC’ is currently unknown.

If Cormier does indeed return he has options on who to fight and the Miocic trilogy makes sense. White said he was very impressed with the fight.

“Stipe and Cormier, that was a f*****g war between two heavyweights that hit like trucks,” White said following the Contender Series.

Although Daniel Cormier was noncommittal on his future, Dana White says he still has lots left to give to the sport. He also remains one of the best fighters on the roster.

“I think he’s one of the best in the world,” White said. “I was looking at the (official UFC) rankings today when they came out – it’s just (expletive) insane to me. This guy on Saturday night was the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world. He loses and drops to No. 7, and he loses to the No. 1 heavyweight contender in the world, and the guy who has the most consecutive title defenses in UFC history, and Cormier drops to No. 7? It’s crazy. He’s much higher than that, and he’s one of the best to ever do it. He’s still one of the best in the world.

“He looked damn good until, like I said the night of the fight, whoever came up with that ‘go to the body’ gameplan in between rounds was (expletive) brilliant. Brilliant. It was even more brilliant the way Stipe executed it. So, yes, I think he’s one of the best in the world, and I don’t think he should retire, but that’s up to him and his family.”

So, if Cormier does indeed stick around White says he will do whatever he wants, which he suspects will be the Miocic trilogy.

“I’ll do anything (Cormier) wants to do, and obviously I’ll do anything that Stipe wants to do,” White said. “Stipe’s got to want the trilogy, too.”

Daniel Cormier was looking to defend his heavyweight title for the second time in the main event of UFC 241. There, he was rematching Stipe Miocic in their fight from last summer at UFC 226 where ‘DC’ won by first-round knockout.

Early on, Cormier was winning the fight and was up 30-27 on many media scores. He was landing the harder shots, took Miocic down and was having his way with him.

But, in the fourth round, Miocic switched game plans and started to attack the body which really started to hurt Cormier. Then, after multiple body shots, it was all over as Miocic attacked the head, wobbled ‘DC’ and then finished him on the ground. Just like that, Stipe Miocic was the new heavyweight champ while Daniel Cormier is not.

Following the loss, many pros reacted to the fight, but one of Cormier’s closest friends and training partners in Khabib Nurmagomedov took to Instagram to give his thoughts.

“The winner has many friends, but a person who lost has real ones.
Keep your head up, you already proved that you are one of the best who ever compete in this sport @ufc” — Nurmagomedov on Instagram.

What is next for Daniel Cormier is unknown. But, as Nurmagomedov writes, ‘DC’ is one of the best to ever do it.
