With Brunson Out of March 3 Strikeforce Bout, Tim Kennedy Willing to Step In Against Jacare

With the news today that Derek Brunson has failed his medicals and as a result has been forced out of his March 3 main card bout with Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza at the upcoming Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey show in Columbus, OH, it appears that one prime candidate for the bout is very interested in stepping up on just over two weeks notice: Tim Kennedy.

Kennedy, who still has a bitter taste in his mouth from the unanimous decision loss he suffered against Souza back in August 2010 at Strikeforce: Houston responded to questions on Twitter today regarding his desire to take the bout and said he is in shape and ready to go if he gets the call to rematch the Brazilian submission specialist.

“I know I don’t really have an objective opinion, but I’m pretty accurate in how I view how fights went, and I thought I landed more strikes,” Kennedy told MMAjunkie.com after the fight. “I thought I landed more kicks. I knew I stuffed both of his takedowns. I knew I was the only one that scored takedowns. I knew I was the one that was controlling the center of the ring. In my understanding of the scoring of MMA, that means I won the fight.”

Brunson wasn’t cleared by the Ohio commission when they learned that he wears contacts when he fights — a common practice by fighters. After being told that he would be pulled from the card, he tweeted today that he will be booking an appointment for Lasik eye surgery in the near future.

“Failed medicals [– specifially the] eye exam. I’ve been fighting with contacts for 11 fights, [and it] never was an issue [before],” Brunson explained. “Ohio won’t pass my eye exam. I’m working on getting Lasik [surgery] this week. I’ll be back in no time.”

Hopefully Zuffa books Kennedy for the rematch since it’s unlikely that many opponents will be lining up to take on a tough former Strikeforce champ in two-and-a-half weeks. Tim is said to be next in line at a shot at champ Luke Rockhold, but a planned January bout never materialized for unknown reasons.

Holy Crap, You Gamblers: Ronda Rousey Is a -375 Favorite Over Miesha Tate

(Hey, I keep tons of random trash in *my* car too! SOUL MATES. / Photo via @RondaRousey)

On March 3rd, red-hot women’s MMA prospect Ronda Rousey will drop to 135 pounds for the first time to challenge Miesha Tate for her Strikeforce women’s bantamweight title. Rousey’s pro MMA career isn’t even a year old yet, and she’s already facing the world’s top-ranked 135’er, a woman who holds victories over such big names as Marloes Coenen and Zoila Gurgel.

And according to oddsmakers, Miesha Tate is dead meat.

Props to MiddleEasy for alerting us to the current betting odds for next month’s Tate vs. Rousey showdown in Columbus, Ohio. Due to her string of armbar victories within the first minute of her fights, Ronda Rousey is as high as a -375 favorite in the matchup, with Tate slated as a +275 ‘dog. That, my friends, is insane.

Should Rousey be the favorite here at all? It’s hard to say. Miesha Tate represents such an extraordinary leap in competition level for Rousey, that it’s nearly impossible to predict how their fight will play out. This will be the match that determines if Ronda is overhyped or the real deal. And yet, the oddsmakers have already decided that this is Ronda’s fight to lose.

With a pairing this volatile, we wouldn’t actually recommend that you bet money on this fight. But if you’re a Miesha fan, you might want to jump on this line early.

Semi-related: Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey is scheduled to take place the same day as UFC on FX 2. For the last time, Zuffa — you own Strikeforce now, so you can stop trying to bury them with counter-programming.

Ronda Rousey Recounts Beating Up Dudes in a Movie Theater (VIDEO)

Ronda Rousey made an appearance on Attack of the Show and explained her side of her Twitter beef with Cris “Cyborg” Santos. Rousey says Santos posted a “photoshopped” picture of a beat up Gina Carano and said Ronda Rousey was next. Ronda is hardly intimidated by Photoshop and tactfully responded: “@criscyborg you don’t just have a dick, you are a dick for posting that picture of Gina, you cheater.”

Rousey is pretty good with defense as she also talks about an incident where some chick in a mini skirt surrounded by dudes, put her legs up on Rousey’s chair in a movie theater… WTF?!?! Where was Rousey watching this movie? Was Pee Wee Herman beside her? It turns out, Rousey was watching Juno and after the movie she politely pulled off the chick’s ugg boots and threw them while muttering something about her mom not raising her with manners. Then about 4 dudes swarmed Rousey in an attempt to protect their lovely lady’s honor and Rousey gave them a swift beat down.

The interview is entertaining and worth 7 minutes of your time. Watch below:

Gegard Mousasi vs. Mike Kyle Added to March 3 ‘Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey’ Card

A light heavyweight tilt between former Strikeforce 205-pound kingpin Gegard Mousasi and controversial American Kickboxing Academy fighter Mike Kyle has been added to Strikeforce’s March 3 “Tate vs. Rousey” event in Columbus, Ohio.

A light heavyweight tilt between former Strikeforce 205-pound kingpin Gegard Mousasi and controversial American Kickboxing Academy fighter Mike Kyle has been added to Strikeforce’s March 3 “Tate vs. Rousey” event in Columbus, Ohio.

Kyle revealed the news today via Twitter.

Mousasi, who is undefeated in his past five bouts, including a draw to Keith Jardine last April, has not faltered since losing the Strikeforce strap to Muhammed Lawal back in April, 2010. Recently, the Armenian-born fighter who is the current DREAM light heavyweight champion revealed last year that he may try out for the Dutch Olympic boxing team in February and if all goes well he will compete at the Olympics this summer.

First he will have to prove his pugilistic skills against Kyle, a knockout artist in his own right who racked up 12 of his 19 wins by knockout.

MAK has competed as a moneyweight fighter the past few years with various levels of success, including a surprise KO of future Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante in June 2009. Since then he hasn’t fought the same level of competition, except for Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, who knocked him out at Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu II in December 2010. In his only fight since, he defeated Marcos Rogerio de Lima by unanimous decision at Strikeforce World Grand Prix: Barnett vs. Kharitonov in September.

The card will be headlined by a women’s bantamweight championship bout between challenger Ronda Rousey and champion Miesha Tate. Also on tap are a welterweight bout between Paul Daley and Kazuo Misaki as well as lightweights Josh Thomson and KJ Noons.

Rumors of a bout between Gegard Mousasi and Mike Kyle have spread at various times over the last year. In fact, the duo seemed destined to meet in both April and September of 2011 before various issues sidetracked the pairing from being made.

Now, it’s on again.

Sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed that the Mousasi-Kyle matchup has been agreed to as the co-main event of March 3’s Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey event.

Mousasi (32-3-2) was last seen just over one month ago, showing improved takedown defense to go with his usual aggressive striking game en route to a unanimous decision over Ovince St. Preux.

Meanwhile, Kyle (19-8-1, 1 no contest) is coming off a unanimous decision victory of his own, this one coming against Marcos Rogerio de Lima in September.

The winner of the bout may eventually earn a chance to fight for the vacant Strikeforce light-heavyweight title.

Mousasi-Kyle is the co-headliner just underneath a women’s bantamweight title bout with Miesha Tate against Ronda Rousey. As MMA Fighting reported earlier Monday, a lightweight fight between Conor Heun and Ryan Couture was just added to the event as well.
