Submission of the Day: Tyler Stokes Taps Jesse Thacher With Kneebar From Back Mount

On Saturday night at Phoenix FC 1 in Overland Park, Kansas, an impressively bearded flyweight by the name of Tyler Stokes stopped Jesse Thacher in unique fashion with a kneebar from back mount.

Stokes slips to the mat while throwing a kick just seconds into the fight, but pops up and surprises Thacher with a haymaker to the jaw, then takes his back. About 20 seconds later, Stokes grabs Thacher’s left leg and pulls it straight up over Thacher’s head. Thacher taps immediately, and Stokes celebrates with a tumbling routine.

Not a traditional kneebar, Thacher’s submission is fairly close to the “Suloev Stretch” that Kenny Robertson pulled off in the UFC last year. Do we have a new dark horse candidate for 2014’s Submission of the Year Potato Award?

VIDEO: Cat Zingano Returns to (Jiu-Jitsu) Competition, Immediately Pwns Some Broad with a Flying Armbar

The last time we checked in on Cat Zingano, she had just been cleared to train for the first time in over a year following the knee injury that forced her out of a TUF 18 coaching gig and a beatdown at the hands of fight with Ronda Rousey. Over that period, Zingano tried her hardest to remain fresh in our minds by posting a few gruesome knee drain videos here and there, but time passed, Rousey continued to destroy all challengers placed before her, and Zingano’s name was all but lost amongst the Holms, Cyborgs, Caranos, and Mayweathers of the WMMAsphere.

But now, video has surfaced of Zingano back in action. “Alpha” returned to competition in triumphant fashion at Grappler’s Quest, a grappling tournament being held as part of the UFC Fan Expo in Las Vegas last Saturday, picking up a 14 second submission via flying armbar. According to some spectators, the sub was “undeniable in its illness.”

To be honest, Cat’s opponent (Liz Exell) just looked like she was happy to be there. Still, check out a video of the sweet submission above, then fill the comments sections with cries of how Rousey vs. Zingano needs to happen yesterday.

The latest example of mind-blowing grappling ingenuity comes to us from Cage Warriors 60 on Saturday, where a lightweight submission artist named Ivan “Buki” Buchinger tapped Mick Sinclair in the second round with a…well…it’s hard to say, really.

Sherdog ID’s the move as a “scarf-hold armlock,” which is basically true — and more descriptive than the ring-announcer’s vague claim of a “modified Americana” — but the positioning of Buchinger’s body, and the way that he sets up the hold by trapping Sinclair’s right arm with his legs before cranking on the neck makes this submission unique and kind of astounding.

Side note: Buchinger got his ass handed to him by Conor McGregor when they fought last December. But still, good sub, mate.

In the midst of our eJizzing about Coty Shannon’s absurd omoplata-choke from his amateur debut last June, we completely overlooked the fact that the budding bantamweight star landed an equally mind-boggling submission in his most recent fight. Nemesis Fighting Alliance sent us this clip of Shannon’s win over Justin Jovanovic, which took place at NFA: Night of Fire on April 27th of this year.

The lanky grappler doesn’t look too graceful on his feet — a woman in the crowd laughs at the 1:23 mark, possibly at Coty’s footwork — but once he drags Jovanonic to the mat, it’s on, son. Shannon takes Jovanovic’s back, snakes his arms around Jovanovic’s head and under one arm, tosses his shin up on Jovanovic’s neck and squeezes out a tap immediately. So it’s sort of like a Peruvian Necktie, except with a gogoplata twist. Or something. I feel like Eddie Bravo would have a name for this move. “Oh yeah, brah, that’s West Coast Poison Control, all my students know that one [*exhales a cloud of smoke*].” Anyway, it’s awesome and you should all watch it.

We may be only a few months into 2013, but the list of potential Potato Award recipients is quickly filling up like it’s going out of style. We already have a strong frontrunner for “Flop of the Year” in Nick “Turbo Tax” Capes, and just last week, we introduced the greatest knockout of the year, “The Skywalker Crotchcracker” (a.k.a The Spinning Harold Howard, The McSleepytime Falcon Roundhouse, or The Over-the-Shoulder-Boulder-Holder).

And although the fight in which Olivier Fontaine was able to pull of this absolutely insane flying armbar actually went down in early February, the video of said armbar has only recently started making its way around the MMA blogosphere. We’ve thrown a full video of the fight above, but skip to the 1:28 mark to see just what we’re talking about.

After Sofian Benchohra manages to snatch up one of Fontaine’s legs on an attempted body kick, you assume Fontaine is seconds away from an always demoralizing leg sweep. WRONG. Fontaine counters with a beautiful spinning, flying armbar — almost a somersault armbar, if you will — that Gina Carano couldn’t pull off with all of the stunt coordinators in the world in her corner. After a brief struggle, Fontaine secures the tap shortly thereafter. Good night, my anus.
