Expected to feature at UFC 279 on September 10. – the undisputed bantamweight title fight between division champion, Aljamain Sterling, and challenger, former two-time division gold holder, T. J. Dillashaw, is now expected to land as the co-headlining bout for UFC 280 on October 22. at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Last time out, Aljamain Sterling co-headlined UFC 273 back in April, successfully unifying the bantamweight titles with a rematch win over rival and then-interim titleholder, Petr Yan in Jacksonville, Florida.

Aljamain Sterling x T.J. Dillashaw is set to be shifted a month later to the Middle East

Returning from his infamous two-year retroactive USADA suspension back in July of last year, former two-time undisputed bantamweight champion, Dillashaw, successfully defeated common-foe, Cory Sandhagen in a close, split decision win as he returned to the division limit. Yahoo! Sports reporter, Kevin Iole was first to report the news of Sterling’s rescheduled title fight with Dillashaw.

“The bantamweight title fight between @funkmasterMMA (Aljamain Sterling) and @TJDillashaw will be co-main event on #UFC280 on Oct. 22 in Abu Dhabi,” Kevin Iole tweeted.

Initially, Sterling and Dillashaw were targeted to feature at a UFC 279 event in September, however, with the confirmation of a welterweight headliner between Khamzat Chimaev and Nate Diaz for the pay-per-view event, the bantamweight title fight between Sterling and Dillashaw has been shifted.

Clinching the undisputed bantamweight crown back in March of last year, Sterling managed to win the title via disqualification after Yan landed an illegal knee in the fourth round of their title showdown.

As for Dillashaw, the former two-time undisputed bantamweight titleholder first landed the crown with a major upset win over Brazilian veteran, Renan Barao, before then defeating former teammate, Cody Garbrandt in 2017 to win the title for the second time in his lengthy Octagon tenure.

UFC 280 takes place on October 22. from the Etihad Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE – with a vacant lightweight title fight between former champion, Charles Oliveira, and the #4 ranked, Islam Makhachev set to take main event honors.

Aljamain Sterling is ready to sign the paperwork to fight T.J. Dillashaw, but wants to be paid more before signing on the dotted line.

News of the bantamweight title fight between Dillashaw and Sterling came out yesterday. The UFC was looking to book the fight as the headline of UFC 279 on September 10.

It seems that Sterling has dampened the talks a bit, as he feels like he needs to be paid more. With how Sterling has blossomed in popularity and how he played the “bad guy” against Yan in their last fight, Sterling believes he is owed more.

Sterling is coming off his first title defense against Petr Yan, the same person he won the belt from. He won the title off of a DQ. Yan clearly made contact with a huge knee to the head of Sterling while he was downed, but many believed that Sterling may have put on an act, when it came to the damage it caused. Many fans and people in the media believed that the UFC needed to make it a rule that you can’t win the championship due to disqualification, but only lose it.

A fight against Dillashaw would be his second title defense and just Dillashaw’s second fight back, since his suspension he received from using PED’s.

Aljamain Sterling put out a Youtube video explaining his stance on the fight

“There’s no fight until there’s ink on paper, and as of right now, my contract is exactly the same,” Sterling said on his video.(Transcribed by MMAFighting.com)

“There has been no escalator in this fight,” Sterling said. “I’d like to think I played my part, did the right things, and even allowed myself to be the bad guy in the last outing with Petr Yan, and help play up the storyline. So one would think that being a company man would actually help you in the long run. So I did my job – as of right now, I’m training, hoping that we come to some type of agreement to give some type of pay bump which naturally happens in all the contracts.”

Sterling and Dillashaw will be a great fight once the two sides can come to an agreement. One could only imagine how long it will take of Sterling and the UFC to come to terms.

Aljamain Sterling features for the second time this year under the UFC banner

Attempting to land his second successful defense of the bantamweight title, Uniondale native, Aljamain Sterling co-headlined UFC 273 back in April, unifying and defending the bantamweight titles with a split decision win over Dudinka rival, Petr Yan.

As for Dillashaw, the veteran Angels Camp technician headlined UFC Vegas 32 back in July of last year against common-foe, Cory Sandhagen – handing the Colorado native a close, split decision loss in his return to the Octagon for the first time since completing a two-year retroactive USADA suspension. MMA Junkie reporters, Nolan King, and Mike Bohn were first to report Sterling’s targeted title defense against Dillashaw.

Linked with a title showdown against Dillashaw following his Jacksonville, Florida win over Yan back in April, Aljamain Sterling, a staple of Serra-Longo Fight Team – was also briefly linked with a matchup against former featherweight champion, Jose Aldo, however, the Brazilian is expected to fight Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 278 the month prior.

In the midst of a seven-fight winning run, Sterling, who managed to win the title with a disqualification win against Yan back in March of last year, also holds wins over the above mentioned, Sandhagen, Pedro Munhoz, Jimmie Rivera, Cody Stamann, and Brett Johns during that streak.

Undefeated in his last five bantamweight walks under the UFC banner, Dillashaw, who first achieved undisputed gold with an upset knockout win against Renan Barao back in 2014.

In his second title coronation back in November 2017, Dillashaw rallied to stop former teammate, Cody Garbrandt with a second round knockout at Madison Square Garden, before defending the title against the Ohio native with a first round knockout win in the pair’s immediate championship rematch.

Former two-time UFC bantamweight kingpin, T.J. Dillashaw has taken aim at his fellow former two-time division best and past opponent, Dominick Cruz – after the latter questioned how Dillashaw could potentially fight for a title next following an infamous two-year USADA suspension before his July return.

Dillashaw, who shared the Octagon with then-challenger, Cruz back in the main event of UFC Fight Night Boston in January of 2016, dropped the undisputed bantamweight champion to the former in the form of a close, split decision defeat.

In his most recent Octagon appearance, Dillashaw, a native of Angels Camp, headlined a July UFC Apex facility event against Cory Sandhagen, earning his place amongst title contention with a close, split judging win of his own.

However, Dillashaw has received criticism as of late for his calls for a title fight against champion, Aljamain Sterling – with many pointing to his notorious USADA anti-doping violation back in January 2020 following his flyweight title challenge loss to Henry Cejudo.

Slapped with a two-year, retroactive suspension, Dillashaw, who plys his trade under the tutelage of Duane Ludwig, tested positive for in-competition use of erythropoietin (EPO) – resulting in him relinquishing the bantamweight title.

Commenting on Dillashaw’s potential title siege against Sterling next, Cruz questioned how he could march right back into his a title tilt following his past anti-doping transgression.

T.J. Dillashaw reacts to recent comments from past opponent, Dominick Cruz

Reacting to Cruz’s comments, Dillashaw labelled the former champion a “salty c*nt”, and insisted he was clearly jealous of him.

“He (Dominick Cruz) sounds like a salty c*nt,” T.J. Dillashaw told Submission Radio during a recent interview. “I just think he’s obviously jealous of me being able to stay in the top, you know, my layoff and how long I’ve been in the sport and me still be able to come back and prove that I’m still the best. And I did lose money, right? Me not fighting for two years while being a champion is a lot of money out of my pocket. [If I] kept racking up wins, getting title defenses, I mean, we’re talking about millions and millions of dollars that I let slip through my fingers because I made a f*cking stupid mistake.”

“So yeah, I paid my time, I came back and f*ckin’ grinded to get that win on f*cking one leg and one eye, and there’s nothing you can do to deny me that it’s my shot,” T.J. Dillashaw explained. “So, like I said, he’s just being salty, and that’s kind of his personality anyways. He’s kind of an unlikeable dude, I mean, I’ve always respected him and I think he’s got a good eye for stuff, but he’s got like this chip on his shoulder where he feels like everything’s owed to him, and he’s just like always complaining about sh*t.”

Targeting an August Octagon comeback, Cruz, who holds recent wins over both Casey Kenney and Pedro Munhoz – the most recent of which at UFC 269 in December, has welcomed fights against the likes of former champions, Petr Yan, and Jose Aldo.

UFC bantamweight T.J. Dillashaw is eyeing up revenge over Henry Cejudo if he wins the title against Aljamain Sterling.

It’s likely the former two-time UFC bantamweight champion will be fighting against current division’s champ Sterling for the title next. With the Jamaican having called out the American in his post-fight interview at UFC 273, Dillashaw is hungry for the title.

UFC President Dana White even approved the fight himself following UFC 273 with Petr Yan having to take a backseat, for now, to see if a trilogy fight will go ahead with him and Sterling.

Both fighters have spoken publicly about how they feel the fight will be ‘easy’ for themselves, envisioning a clear path to victory. Dillashaw recently claimed that Sterling isn’t a UFC-calibre champ while the champion sees his foe as an ‘easy fight’.

Speaking to ESPN MMA, Dillashaw spoke of his timeline with a title shot around the corner.

“All the chips are lining up perfectly right now,” said Dillashaw. “I mean, get my belt back from Sterling, I got Cejudo supposedly saying he’s coming back, right? Who knows if he goes for ’45s or ’35s. That’d be one that I would love to get back. Then we got José Aldo, a guy that I’ve looked up to when I first got into the sport and kinda dreamed about once I beat Barão. I’ve got some options to defend that belt once I get it. It’s gonna be an exciting 2023.”

Dillashaw fought Henry Cejudo for the UFC flyweight title back in 2019 where he fell to a first-round knockout defeat that night. Following what was his UFC flyweight debut, the 36-year-old would be suspended for two years due to testing positive for EPO use.

Having now returned, Dillashaw is looking to prove all his naysayers wrong on return. With a top-ranked contender already taken care of, he is now eyeing up the title before revenge over his former foe.

Cejudo recently met with the UFC to talk about a potential return to the Octagon. The question remains as to what division he would look to compete in having had the name of UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski on the tip of his tongue for a while now.

If he does return to bantamweight, then Dillashaw would be looking to run their fight back, this time in his natural weight class.

Do you see T.J. Dillashaw reclaiming his belt in the near future?
