Glover Teixeira continues to perform as an underdog, earning not just his fifth consecutive win, but also his second crack atthe UFC light heavyweight crown with a phenomenal third-round rear-naked choke victory over the returning, Thiago ‘Marreta’ Santos.

Displaying his patented power from the opening couple of exchanges, Santos hurt Teixeira early with a counter right-hook, wobbling the Minas Gerais veteran who shot desperately for a frail double-leg takedown.

In typical Teixeira fashion, the veteran managed to score a takedown eventually, grounding out Santos for the rest of the first-round, finding the target from both full-mount and full-guard to really force Santos to keep tabs on his position.

Shooting once again early in the second-frame, Teixeira would land two notable hammer-fists, as Santos struggled to offer anything significant in terms of forcing some sort of scramble – failing to create much if any space for a stand up.

In a round which played out hugely similarly to the opening frame, Teixeira kept Santos busy with an accumulation of strikes from side-control on this occasion, before almost wrapping up a late rear-naked choke, with the round ending klaxon saving Santos’ bacon.

In a massive switch of pace in the third, Santos defended another early shot from Teixeira, before countering with another left hand, dropping his compatriot and assuming half-guard himself, threatening the finish. Almost forcing the issue with a massive barrage of ground-and-pound, a fatigued Santos gave up his back with Teixeira eventually forcing the tap this time around to earn his status as the next contender to the light heavyweight throne.

IT’S TIME! The UFC Vegas 13 main event is finally upon us. Light-heavyweight #1 Thiago Santos puts his ranking on the line against the streaking veteran, Glover Teixeira who is looking to stretch his win streak to five in a row. Who’ll move one step closer to a 205lb title shot? Let’s find out…

Round 1: Thiago Santos opens up with a front kick up the middle. Glover Teixeira tries to come over the top with a strike over the top. Santos clips his opponent and is trying to swarm. Teixeira is wobbling all over the place, eating punches. He manages to shoot for a takedown and create a scramble. He’s got Santos up against the fence but is eating elbows against the fence. After much punishment he finally secures the takedown and falls into an extremely dominant position. Teixeria is going to work and is turning this round around. As the clock ticks down he is working away in the top position. He continues to drop ground and pound up to the horn to end round one.

Round 2: Santos opens up with several kicks on all levels. Glover drops down an secures the takedown. It’s very early in round and he’s in top position once again and Santos doesn’t appear to have the ability to stand back up. Teixeira postures up and begins dropping nasty shots. Santos turns to his sides and looks vulnerable to getting stopped but manages to survive. Teixeira is content to ride it out in half guard, staying busy with shots to avoid a referee’s stand up. He advances to side control. Teixeira drops a nasty elbow and tries to jump to full mount but ends up back in half guard. Not for long though and he’s in in side control and then mount. He unleashes a barrage of strikes, Santos turns his back and is now getting choked – the bell saves him!

Round 3: Santos stuffs a takedown at the start of round three. He throws on the break and drops Teixeira hard! Santos is trying to swarm for the finish but his opponent is hanging tough. The tide has certainly changed here. Santos continues to drops bombs but Teixeira uses the aggression to reverse the position. He’s on the back and sinks in the choke which forces Santos to tap.

LowKick MMA will be bringing you UFC Vegas 13: Santos vs. Teixeira Results throughout the night (Sat. 7th. November 2020) from the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada.

One-time UFC light heavyweight title challengers, Thiago ‘Marreta’ Santos, and Glover Teixeira headline tonight’s event in ‘Sin City’ – hoping to stamp their respective tickets as the next contender to Jan Blachowicz’s 205-pound throne, albeit after the rise of middleweight champion, Israel ‘The Last Stylebender’ Adesanya.

Returning to action from a slew of major leg and knee injuries suffered in his tight five-round affair with two-time champion, Jon ‘Bones’ Jones back in July of last year at UFC 239, 36-year-old bruiser, Santos dropped his first defeat at 205-pounds in his razor-thin decision loss to Jones.

Making a timely rise to title challenger status, the American Top Team trainee had blasted through Eryk Anders, Jimi Manuwa, and scored a knockout victory over current best, the aforenoted, Blachowicz at UFC Fight Night Prague back in February of last year.

41-year-old Minas Gerais favourite, Teixeira would not only book his place in a second light heavyweight title fight under the promotion’s banner with a win over Santos, but would also secure his eye-catching fifth straight win. The poised boxer and grappler completely descimated common-opponent, Anthony Smith in the main event of UFC Fight Night Jacksonville in May, adding to a winning run which includes prior victories over Nikita Krylov, Ion Cutelaba, an Karl Roberson.

In the night’s co-main event, veteran former UFC heavyweight kingpin, Andrei ‘The Pitbull’ Arlovski returns for the second time this year, as he welcomes Canadian division prospect, Tanner ‘The Bulldozer’ Boser.

Sharing the above mentioned Jacksonville card with Teixeira, Arlovski returned to winning ways with a unanimous decision win over Philippe Lins.

Hoping to score his third consecutive win, Boser rebounded from a unanimous decision loss to fellow prospect, Ciryl Gane, with a pair of knockout victories of his own both common-opposition, Lins and Raphael Pessoa, in June and July this year, respectively.

In the UFC Vegas 13 main event, we have an epic light-heavyweight fight with title implications. Thiago Santos returns from his year-long layoff to square off against the streaking Glover Teixeira tonight. Who’ll win? Let’s see what the LowKickMMA staff think…

Jordan Ellis: I almost feel silly picking against Glover Teixeira who has looked so great lately. However, Thiago Santos is a championship level fighter who already holds a win over the current 205lb champion. I believe even after a significant injury and subsequent layoff Santos will be able to get by Teixeira. I actually expect him to score a stoppage quite early in this one.

Prediction: Thiago Santos

Abhinav Kini: This is actually pretty hard to pick for me. While you would naturally go for the more powerful and younger fighter in Thiago Santos, he is coming back from over a year out due to injury and multiple surgeries. It will be interesting to see how he fares upon his return. Glover Teixeira, meanwhile, is on a four-fight winning streak and looks better than he ever has in recent years. He’s also one of the hardest guys to put away. I’m actually going with the upset and picking Teixeira to win. I believe he has more tools and will mix things up and probably get the edge on the ground.

Prediction: Glover Teixeira

Ross Markey: It’s going to be really interesting to see how Thiago Santos returns from his slew of leg and knee injuries suffered in his close title challenge loss to Jon Jones last year. For Glover Teixeira, the veteran is in the form of his recent career, and a victory over his compatriot surely solidifies his status at the next contender at 205-pounds for Jan Blachowicz, after Israel Adesanya of course. While Glover is a patient but very, very slick boxer, evident in his May battering of Anthony Smith, Santos is a wild, explosive Muay Thai practitioner who has laid waste to Jimi Manuwa, common-foe, Smith and of course, holds a knockout win over Blachowicz. I’m picking Thiago Santos to get back to the win column tonight, and in rather fashion via a barrage of strikes.

Prediction: Thiago Santos

Karim Nathan: Santos is one of my favourite fighters to watch so i’m really excited for his return, but you never know how someone is gonna look after all that time out recovering from a devastating injury. Glover on the other hand has been on a very impressive streak in the LHW division and has looked really good especially vs Smith and I feel like he shouldn’t be counted out quickly. However, I think Santos has the heavier hand and I also believe he as the motivation to go and win as he feels he could get the belt since he already stopped the champion previously. So, i’m going with a second round KO win for Santos.

Prediction: Thiago Santos

Harry O’Connor: I’m really looking forward to this fight, I think we will get five solid rounds of fighting, I think it will be fight of the night for sure. I’m going to back Santos, I think as he’s younger and fresher he will edge Glover, who deserves all the credit for being where he is at this age. I think Santos will win this and go on to fight for the Light-Heavyweight title, whether that’s against Jan or Adesanya, we will wait to see. Santos by UD for me.

Prediction: Thiago Santos
