Thiago Santos targets a fight with Jimi Manuwa after getting his hand raised in his latest fight inside of the Octagon under the UFC banner.

How We Got Here

It was revealed on earlier this week that Manuwa was forced to withdraw from his scheduled fight against Santos in a light heavyweight bout. As a result, the UFC needed to find a short-notice replacement to serve as the opponent for Santos and to save this main event. Thus, they got Eryk Anders.

Manuwa is coming off of back-to-back losses to Jan Blachowicz and Volkan Oezdemir. Prior to those losses, he was on a two-fight win streak where he knocked out both of those opponents.

Thiago Santos Targets

As seen in the main event of Saturday’s UFC Sao Paulo event that aired on FOX Sports 1, Santos defeated Anderson via TKO at 5:00 of the third round. This came right after Anders collapsed multiple times trying to get to his stool and as a result, the referee stepped in to stop the fight.

Following the fight, while speaking with media members, Santos made it known that he hasn’t forgotten about Manuwa and seeks a fight with him next.

“I’m going to send him a message right now,” Santos said to MMAJunkie. “I hope he recovers really well, and as soon as possible. And I hope to meet with him in December so we can fulfill the contract we signed.”

“Eryk was holding the cage so he wouldn’t fall,” Santos said. “So the ref pulled me apart and told me to come back. So I went and came back. I thought he was going to stop the fight, but he told me to continue.

“The whole time my trainers were talking about the time, and I knew it was almost up, so I tried to throw a lot of strikes so the fight would end, or he would finish the round hurt, and that’s what happened. I got tired, but it’s normal to get tired in a fight as intense as that,” Santos said. “But I felt conscious of whatever was happening. I felt power in my punches, but I was a little bit slower. So I’ll sit down with my coaches, and we’ll see what will be done.”

Eryk Anders hospitalized following his headlining fight over the weekend that saw put on a tough fight that nearly went the distance. Now, more details have surfaced online regarding why he had to miss out on the post-fight press conference.

Story Of The Fight

As seen in the main event of Saturday’s UFC Sao Paulo event that aired on FOX Sports 1, Thiago Santos defeated Anderson via TKO at 5:00 of the third round. This came right after Anders collapsed multiple times trying to get to his stool and as a result, the referee stepped in to stop the fight.

If you recall, this was not the original main event. A light heavyweight bout between former UFC title challenger Glover Teixeira and Jimi Manuwa was expected to serve as the event headliner. This fight got scrapped once Teixeira pulled out on August 14 due to a shoulder injury and was later replaced by Thiago Santos. Then it was revealed that Manuwa had to pull out because of an injury and the UFC got Anders to step-in on short-notice.

This played a factor in this fight no doubt. In the fight, Santos rocked Anders early with kicks to the body and flurries along the fence but was able to land some big left hands of his own.

Later in the fight in the third round, Anders went for a rear-naked choke from the back after taking Santos down, who escaped then they had a wild exchange in the third round. This is when Anders tried his best to get back to his corner but was exhausted and led to the referee to wave it off.

Eryk Anders Hospitalized

Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting noted on his official Twitter account that Ander had to go to the hospital following the fight. Also, Hector Lombard, who suffered a decision loss to Thales Leites in a middleweight bout on the preliminary card, also went to the hospital. Only, in this case, he went there after it was revealed that he suffered an orbital bone fracture. Here is what the reporter wrote on Twitter:

“Per CABMMA medical director Marcio Tannure, Eryk Anders was more exhausted than anything. He’s in hospital right now getting exams done. Hector Lombard suffered a orbital bone fracture.”

Thiago Santos and Eryk Anders went to all-out war in the main event of last night’s (Sat., September 22, 2018) UFC Fight Night 137 at Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil.

There’s just no other way to put it.

The original headliner for the event was supposed to be Jimi Manuwa vs. Glover Teixeira. Teixeira withdrew due to injury and usual middleweight Santos replaced him. Manuwa then withdrew and Anders – also a middleweight – replaced him at light heavyweight. But although the fighters were ‘replacements,’ they fought like champions in Sao Paulo.

The hometown competitor came out winging his trademark powerful offense. He landed straight punches, knees, and massive kicks to the body. But Anders attempted to neutralize “Marreta” with a relentless onslaught of takedown attempts. Some were successful but he was unable to ground the Brazilian striker for too long. That is until he took Santos’ back and threatened with a rear-naked choke.

The Brazilian survived and even reversed position. He found his kicking range again, but the action was halted by an eye poke. When Anders sought another takedown after a brief break, Santos began unloading a nonstop torrent of short elbows and punches that left Anders battered as the bell sounded on the third round. He fell to the mat three times in a concerning scene, awarding Santos the win in an absolutely awesome fight that won “Fight of the Night” as it deserved to.

This evening’s (Sat., September 22, 2018) UFC Fight Night 137 is in the books from the Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil. Now it’s time to watch the aftermath in the post-fight press conference.

In the main event, middleweights Thiago Santos and Eryk Anders squared off at light heavyweight. Jimi Manuwa and Glover Teixeira both previously dropped out of the fight due to injury. The two replacement fighters put on a rousing three-round fight with Santos taking home a vicious referee stoppage.

In the co-headliner, Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira secured a brutally fast stoppage over Carlo Pedersoli. Neil Magny was his original opponent. Oliveira took out his anger quickly on his late replacement, flooring him with a huge punch in the first round and finishing the fight quick.

Overall, the event was a bit short on big-name value. However, it more than made up for that with the retirements of two longtime veterans. It was also an event to remember due to its wide variety of impressive finishes by several fighters. Santos was the obvious one, but there were many other worthy finishes.

There’s a good amount to unpack from Sao Paulo, so join us for the post-fight press conference streaming live after the main card here:
