Despite Recent Arrest for Aggravated Assault, Thiago Silva is Teaching Kickboxing Classes at the Blackzilians Gym

(“First, I established wrist control, then I grabbed my gun and pointed it at her like this.”)

Ever since being released from jail on a $25,000 bond in March, former UFC fighter Thiago Silva has quietly been awaiting trial for his armed standoff with Florida police back in February, the charges against him including aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and resisting arrest without violence (Yay progress!).

But being that MMA fighters make shit for money and we all know it, one would imagine that Silva could probably use a side job to pay all the hefty lawyer fees his future has in store. I mean, not at any place with a semi-reputable standing in the MMA community, but surely someone, somewhere, could put a guy with Silva’s skills (Muay Thai, BJJ, improvised intimidation techniques) to work, right?

Well…(via Fox Sports)

Silva is back at Jaco Hybrid Training Center, home of the Blackzilians fight team, teaching kickboxing and continuing to train with his teammates. Silva, who was wearing an ankle monitor, was asked for comment on his situation at the gym Friday and he declined to talk about it.

Blackzilians head coach Jorge Santiago said the team is happy to have Silva back in the fold. “Having him around is great,” Santiago said. “He brings energy. It’s contagious.”

Not to mention he’s a staple of the community! — Florida

Additionally, FOX Sports’ Marc Raimondi posted the above photo to his Twitter — an ad for Silva’s classes that conveniently neglects to mention how Silva achieved the title of “UFC veteran.”

More on this story, including an update on Silva’s estranged wife, are after the jump.

And if you think thaaat’s bad, you might be interested to know that last Friday, Silva’s wife, Thaysa Kamiji, had a judge withdraw the restraining order she had placed against Silva following that whole “He stuck a gun in mouth and said he’d kill me if he ever got of jail” thing. Apparently it’s all forgive and forget in Brazil, which is why rather than look for a plea, Silva’s attorney Scott Saul (as in, “Better Call”) is hoping that his client will beat the charges outright.

I’m looking to beat this stuff. What made this so juicy in the beginning, that’s not what the case is any longer. Why did that happen? What was written in the police reports is not exactly accurate.

So there you have it: A former UFC fighter currently facing aggravated assault charges is teaching kickboxing and life skills to our nation’s youth because hey, the cops may have exacerbated the extent of his homicidal rage in their reports. (And we’ll call it, AMERICA!)

Personally, I think the most absurd aspect of Silva’s story is that he has the audacity to list “conditioning” as one of his strong suits. HI-OH!

Thiago Silva Released From Jail on $25,000 Bond, Awaits Aggravated Assault Trial

(Props: Local10.com)

A month after he was arrested for allegedly holding his ex-wife Thaysa at gunpoint and making death threats outside of Pablo Popovitch’s gym in Fort Lauderdale, UFC light-heavyweight veteran Thiago Silva is a temporarily-free man again. On Friday, a judge granted Silva’s release on a $25,000 bond following a hearing in Broward County, Florida — despite prosecutors’ claims that Silva’s status as a Brazilian national makes him a flight risk, and Thaysa’s testimony that Thiago would kill her if he was freed.

Silva currently faces charges of aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and resisting arrest without violence. His next court appearance will reportedly take place next week. In the meantime, Silva must wear an electronic monitoring device, complete an anger management program, submit to random drug and alcohol testing, and (this goes without saying) stay away from Thaysa and Popovitch. In addition, Silva was forced to surrender his passport and must stay out of Broward County.

According to this Local10 report, Silva had dozens of friends and MMA fighters supporting him at Friday’s hearing, including Rashad Evans. In a salacious twist, Pablo Popovitch’s wife Fabianna gave testimony, stating that Thaysa “destroyed my life and my kids’ family” by “sleeping with my husband.” We’ll keep you posted when we have more details about Thiago Silva’s upcoming trial.

Bond Hearing for Embattled Thiago Silva Set for Next Week

A bond hearing next week will determine if former UFC light heavyweight Thiago Silva can leave the jail cell he has occupied since his Feb. 6 arrest.

Silva’s manager, Glenn Robinson, informed MMAFighting.com of the news on Tuesday.

On Feb. 6, Silva allegedly showed up at Pablo Popovitch‘s jiu-jitsu school and threatened to shoot the people inside, including his wife Thaysa, if Popovitch did not come outside for a confrontation. The day before, Silva had violated a restraining order issued for Thaysa; he also sent her a text message telling her he would kill her.

After the confrontation at the school, Silva fled to his home, where a SWAT team arrived. Silva was eventually arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a weapon, one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and one count of resisting an officer without violence.

Silva was held without bond at the Broward County jail because the judge presiding over his case feared Silva might flee to his native Brazil, where it would be tough to extradite him back to the United States for trial. He was originally scheduled for a bond hearing last Friday, but the case was never heard because the judge transferred it to domestic-violence court.

Silva’s contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship was terminated shortly after the news of his arrest broke, and UFC President Dana White said he would never fight for the UFC again.

He was scheduled to face Ovince St. Preux at UFC 171 in Dallas next month. He last competed at a Fight Night card in October, beating Matt Hamill by unanimous decision. Silva weighed in at 208 pounds for the fight, adding to a laundry list of missteps that plagued his career during his time in the UFC.

Thiago Silva’s Ex-Wife Says Fighter Turned “Violent” After Cocaine Use

The ex-wife of former UFC light heavyweight Thiago Silva has finally offered her side of the story regarding last Thursday’s alleged domestic violence incident that took place at Team Popovich Martial Arts and Fitness.

The ex-wife of former UFC light heavyweight Thiago Silva has finally offered her side of the story regarding last Thursday’s alleged domestic violence incident that took place at Team Popovich Martial Arts and Fitness.

Married to Silva from 2004 to 2012, Thaysa Kamiji told Brazilian website UOL (via MMA Fighting) that her ex-husband’s continued abuse of cocaine contributed to his arrest Thursday.

“You know what I don’t understand? We had a healthy relationship, we always talked, each one respected the other’s space. He became (violent) over the past three weeks. I think that’s the consequence of the use of cocaine.”

The Broward (Fla.) County Sheriff Office’s SWAT Team arrested Silva in his home shortly after the former UFC stalwart allegedly drove to Team Popovich and threatened Kamiji and Popovich with a handgun.

Kamiji, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, considers Popovich her boyfriend and coach.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office charged Silva with two counts of aggravated assault with a weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and resisting an officer without violence.

Kamiji, however, admitted that the incident didn’t mark the first time that Silva crossed the line violently with a weapon.

In fact, according to a police report from Jan. 30, via MMAMania, Silva placed a revolver in the mouth of Kamiji and threatened to kill her.

“My marriage was over in December of 2012,” Kamiji said. “In our relationship, I had to deal with the imbalance and aggressions. But I never went to talk to the police because I fear the reactions. Even after I was assaulted, I did not speak.”

Silva amassed a 7-3-2 record in the UFC’s 205-pound division, which he joined in 2007. He won five UFC fights via KO and only suffered losses to Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans and Alexander Gustafsson.

Silva never tested positive for cocaine in his 21-fight pro career, although the 31-year-old Brazilian had to settle for no-contests in his UFC wins over Brandon Vera and Stanislav Nedkov.

Silva falsified a urine sample in his post-fight drug test following his bout with Vera at UFC 125. Two fights later, Silva submitted Nedkov with an arm-triangle choke, only to fail his post-fight drug screening for marijuana.

Thiago Silva’s Lawyer: ‘Trigger-Happy’ Cops ‘Overreacted’ in My Client’s Arrest

Ex-UFC light heavyweight Thiago Silva is still being held in jail without bond for a domestic violence incident on Thursday that saw the Brazilian slugger pull a gun on his estranged wife and her boyfriend.

A SWAT team was then dispatched to Silva’s home before the fighter was detained and taken to Florida’s Broward County Jail.

That aspect of the arrest has Silva’s attorney, Scott Saul, up in arms, according to an interview with TMZ Sports.

There was NO REASON for cops to call in the SWAT team to apprehend Thiago Silva … the “trigger-happy” police simply overreacted … so says the UFC fighter’s lawyer …  Saul says … cops went “overboard” because he’s a UFC fighter. … “There was no allegation of harm against anyone,” Saul says … ‘But they treated it like a terrorist threat.”

Silva was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and one count of resisting an officer without violence.

After details of the incident emerged, UFC President Dana White told TMZ Sports,”This guy will never fight in the UFC again.”

According to a police report dated January 30, per Jesse Holland of MMA Mania, Silva had been having ongoing domestic issues with his estranged wife Thaysa, put a gun in her mouth and threatened to kill her during this incident in question.

The 31-year-old Blackzilian team member was preparing for a fight with Strikeforce import Ovince St. Preux at UFC 171 next month, but has since been replaced by Nikita Krylov.

The heavy-handed striker, with a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu to boot, had been a staple in the lower portion of the UFC’s Top 10 rankings at 205 pounds.

Inside the Octagon, Silva had decisively won consecutive bouts over Rafael Cavalcante and Matt Hamill after a 0-2 (2) stretch between January 2010 and November 2012.

It’s 2014—if you aren’t using social media by now, then you’re doing it wrong.

As much as the old-timers scold us for it, social networking gets the word out there faster than the speed of light. Gone are the days where we had to sit around and wait for what seemed like an eternity for a story to reach us.
