In the co-main event of the second event put on by the UFC on Saturday night, Brazilian contender Thomas Almeida returned to his winning ways.

At the UFC Fight Night 100 event in his home country of Brazil, UFC Bantamweight contender Thomas Almeida scored an impressive second-round TKO over Albert Morales in second-to-last bout of the evening, earning himself a “Performance of the Night” bonus for the fight.

Featured above are video highlights of the Almeida-Morales bout, which saw Almeida return from the only loss of his 23-fight professional MMA career to Cody “No Love” Garbrandt at the UFC Fight Night 88 event in May with a TKO victory at the 1:37 mark of the second round.

With his hype train derailed following a shocking first-round knockout loss to title contender Cody Garbrandt earlier this year, touted prospect Thomas Almeida was looking to rebound with a big win when he met lesser-known Albert Morales in the co-main event of last night’s (Sat., November 19, 2016) UFC Fight Night 100 from the Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil.

What he lacked in recognition, Morales more than made up for in heart, taking the fight to the highly favored “Thominhas” in his native land. He made an impact with some big shots and a takedown, even taking Almeida’s back.

However, it was the respected Muay Thai striking skill of Almeida that ultimately won the day, with a barrage of accurate punches and kicks leading to an impressive finishing sequence where the Brazilian future star felled Morales with a pinpoint uppercut to the liver. Once upon a time, Thomas Almeida (21-1) was an undefeated prospect on a tear in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bantamweight division. With some impressive finishes, “Thominhas” was on a fast track to a UFC title opportunity. Cody Garbrandt changed all of that.

Still considered a prospect at the age of 25, Almeida had a chance to wash away the taste of defeat when he met Albert Morales (6-1-1) at UFC Fight Night 100 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

He did just that.

Almeida landed a counter elbow about a minute into the opening frame. Morales ate a stiff leg kick. He returned fire with a front kick to the body. A jumping switch kick from “Thominhas” was blocked. A left hand found the mark for Morales. He charged in and swung for the fences. Morales got tagged clean. Almeida wobbled his opponent, but was taken down. Morales moved to the back of Almeida and went for a rear-naked choke. They separated and exchanged shots near the end of the round.

Almeida landed a leg kick to start the second round. A spinning back kick to the body from “Thominhas” was blocked. A left hook stunned Morales. Almeida swarmed with strikes and a knee to the head. Morales went down from the combinations and that was it.

Final Result: Thomas Almeida def. Albert Morales via TKO (Strikes) – R2, 1:37

Back in May, Thomas Almeida was dealt his first career defeat, falling to bantamweight title contender Cody Garbrandt.

Now, Almeida has his sights set on getting back into contention himself starting Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 100 vs. Albert Morales.

“Spending the last three months out of the Octagon has been very good for me,” Almeida said. “I could renew my training and techniques, and review the points that I missed in the last fight.”

Almeida, a 25-year-old from Brazil, is 21-1 overall and 4-1 inside the Octagon. Three of his four wins with the UFC were finishes, including a flying knee landed on Brad Pickett.

Thomas Almeida is ready to fight again.

After suffering his first career loss to Cody Garbrandt earlier this year in 21 fights, Almeida (20-1) will be in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 100 next month opposite Albert Morales. The card takes place from Brazil and airs live on FOX Sports 1.

For Almeida, who had won his first four UFC fights, it is all about moving forward and not looking back now.

“I’m well-trained, very focused, very hungry. Now I just need to focus on my opponent’s fighting style, come up with a strategy, make weight and go have fun,” Almeida said during a recent interview with reporters in Rio de Janeiro (thanks to MMAjunkie for the quotes).

Almeida still has plenty of work to do before facing Morales, who he admits was a complete unknown before checking out fight clips of him on YouTube shortly after the bout was announced.

“I didn’t know him,” Almeida said. “Before coming here, I went on YouTube and saw a few of his fights. I noticed he’s tough, he likes to strike, he’s a taller guy. But I still have some time to analyze better, to put together a strategy. I just wanted to fight – it didn’t matter against whom or where – so I’m very happy to be able to show my game and my evolution.”

Reigning UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has a long and rocky history with Sacramento based gym Team Alpha Male, a team founded and led by Cruz’s most bitter rival, Urijah Faber. Cruz has most notably battled with “The California Kid” on three different occasions, winning twice with the most recent victory coming earlier this month at UFC 199. With a clear cut unanimous decision victory, “The Dominator” closed the door on a near decade long rivalry with Faber.

Cruz has also had bad blood with ex-Team Alpha Male member TJ Dillashaw, who “The Dominator” outpointed last January to recapture the title. In Cruz’s mind, the rivalry between him and Team Alpha Male will never end:

“I’ve been facing these guys since the beginning of my career. I said it a long time ago on one of my interviews that I chop one head off and another one just pops right back up,” Cruz said (transcription by MMA Fighting). “Those guys are never going to stop hating me. They’re never going to stop wanting to beat me.”

“Faber’s going to keep promoting these guys because he collects a percentage off promoting these guys.”

Cruz often accuses Faber of collecting money off rising fighters from the gym, and the next surging Team Alpha Male bantamweight appears to be No. 7-ranked Cody “No Love” Garbrandt. Garbrandt recently scored a brutal knockout victory over Thomas Almeida, and Faber has said that he’ll eventually be a tough test for Cruz.

The champion, however, isn’t worried about “No Love”, and actually issued a challenge to his rivals over in Sacramento:

“To me, it was just normal, Team Alpha Fail business. Them talking, trying to skip positions in the line,” Cruz said. “The way I see it is, just get in line man. Beat somebody that’s ranked in the top 3.”

“That’s how I feel about those guys, any of those guys. Don’t try to talk your way to the front of the line.”

Has Team Alpha Male jumped the gun on Garbrandt, or is the young knockout artist on his way to a title shot?
