It appears Golden Boy MMA was a one-hit wonder.

According to Tito Ortiz, who fought Chuck Liddell in the main event back in November, he announced to TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter that the promotion is no more.

“Yea it’s dead,” Ortiz said when asked if Golden Boy MMA was still around (h/t BJPENN.com). “They are just in the boxing business and I can leave it there. I gave them the opportunity to run with something and make it huge but it just didn’t work out. I did what I needed to do promotion wise. Getting ready for the fight it was eighteen weeks and it just ended up getting me another fight in the future.”

Although the promotion only did one show, a trilogy fight between the two legends, Ortiz says he was happy with Oscar De La Hoya. And, the UFC Hall of Famer says he can’t say anything bad about him because he gave him an opportunity to fight. And, he is now signed to Combate Americas because of it.

“I can’t say nothing bad about Oscar because he gave me an opportunity and I am very thankful for it. It’s just one of those things as a promoter, you’ve got to do your homework. You know a perfect example is Dana White. He does his homework, he busts his ass and he does it for the MMA crowd and not just for his family but for fighters and their future. Oscar just really didn’t put his homework in and he didn’t do what he wanted to do for mixed martial arts. He’s a boxing promoter, and I guess we will leave it right there.”

De La Hoya and Golden Boy are sticking to boxing, after a failed venture into the MMA space.

Oscar De La Hoya reveals his high expectations for the trilogy fight between UFC Legends Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell that takes place later this year. The boxing turned MMA promoter is already doing what he’s paid to do, which is to promote.

Motive

Thus, when talking about the upcoming fight, he promised that they would get paid more in this fight than their first two bouts. This has been a topic that he has talked about quite a bit while trying to make this fight happen and continues to do so.

Although he won’t get into specifics, he says both combatants will earn their biggest checks ever for a fight. According to Oscar, one of his reasons for getting into MMA is to offer fighters another outlet and wants to see them get paid big.

Oscar De La Hoya Reveals

“Look, we have arguably the two biggest names in MMA. These are the pioneers that started with UFC and they have had two incredible fights together. Now Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell will once again give the fans their money’s worth,” said Oscar (H/T to MMAMania) on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show.

“The fact that I am including them in all revenue shares makes a huge difference. Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell deserve it, they are legends. They deserve to be treated the right way.”

“All I can say is that they are going to make the most money they have ever made in their careers. And I know that for a fact,” he added. “The fact that we are including them in all revenue shares is a big game changer for both guys. This fight was relatively easy to make because we do include them in all revenuers that are coming in to the pot. What fighter in UFC can say that other than maybe Conor McGregor?”

This event goes down on November 24, 2018 inside The Forum in Inglewood, California and will air live on pay-per-view. More fights for the main and under card of this show will be announced in the coming weeks.

So….this is happening:

It looks like all that talk of Golden Boy getting into MMA promotion and putting on a trilogy fight between Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz are true, as “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” says he’s now out of retirement to “give the fans the fight they’ve been waiting for”.

Rumors of Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy getting into the MMA game spread like wildfire last weak, with the Liddell vs. Ortiz trilogy oddly at the center of it all.

Ortiz took to Instagram on Friday to announce his coming out of retirement to once again fight Chuck Liddell:

I want to give the fans the fight they have been waiting for #TitovsChuck3 #Redemption thanks to @primetime360esm with @get_repost Tito Ortiz is officially out of a year long retirement. While on @BitetheMic with @MikeTyson and @Tattootheone Tito was asked if he was going to fight @chuckliddell -Tito replied why doesn’t @OscarDeLaHoya @GoldenBoyBoxing get into #MMA and promote the fight. The two former UFC light heavyweight champions have certainly had differing endings in their respective careers, with Liddell retiring after suffering his third brutal knockout loss in a row back in 2010.

Meanwhile, Ortiz managed more of a fairy tale ending, having signed with Bellator before racking up a few wins before retiring after a submission victory over Chael Sonnen in 2017.

However, when the two fought in the past, “The Iceman” TKO’d Ortiz twice and clearly got the better of him. Those happened all the way back in 2004 and 2006, and Liddell never really looked the same following their second bout at UFC 66. He would end up losing the title to Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 71.

This will be the first MMA fight Golden Boy will promote should the deal go through. The respected boxing promotion is backed by legend and former champion Oscar De La Hoya, who was extremely enthusiastic about the trilogy when recently asked about it.

Are you interested in a trilogy between “The Iceman” vs. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy”? Or is there a reason even Bellator may not touch this fight…
