Ex-UFC megastar Ronda Rousey describes what it feels like to break someone's arm: 'It kind of grosses me out'

Despite being known as the queen of the armbar during her historic MMA run, Ronda Rousey was never particularly fond of the damage it would do to people. In fact, she was kind of grossed out by it.

Even before making her first appearance inside the Octagon at UFC 157, ‘Rowdy’ was already well-known for snapping limbs in a matter of seconds. Under the Strikeforce banner, it took her less than two minutes to collectively tap out Sarah D’Alelio, Julia Budd, and Sarah Kaufman.

She also submitted Miesha Tate in Strikeforce two years before repeating the performance in a slightly more competitive rematch.

However, in a recently resurfaced interview with MiddleEasy five months before her UFC debut, Rousey revealed that she found nothing satisfying about hurting her opponents with the devastating maneuver.

“I don’t think it’s satisfying,” Rousey said. “It kind of grosses me out. I tell everybody, it kind of feels like tearing apart a turkey with a crotch. It really does. It’s gross. When you’re trying to get a turkey thing off and you feel all the cartilage and the tendons and the bones coming off, when you’re pulling it, it really is that exact feeling.

“It’s gross. But that’s the way it is. They’d try to do the exact same thing to me. I’ve felt it being done to my own arms” (h/t talkSPORT).

Ronda Rousey went 6-0 with six first-round finishes, all by armbar, before being declared the UFC’s first-ever female world champion. But of those six women who fell, Julia Budd undoubtedly suffered the most. Squaring off at Strikeforce Challengers 20 in November 2011, Rousey recalled dislocated Budd’s elbow a mere 39 seconds into the scrap.

“I totally felt it go out. The referee said I couldn’t talk to her. So, I was like, ‘Alright, that’s totally out,’” Rousey said at the time. “I flipped her over and I was like, ‘Ew!’ I didn’t want to take my arm and point at it but I was like, ‘Uh, somebody stop this please.’”

Ronda Rousey despises being called a ‘one-trick pony’

Rousey added two more armbar submission victories to her resume during her first two appearances with the UFC, prompting some fight fans to dub her a one-trick pony.

“When people say that I’m a one-trick pony and only have the one armbar, they don’t realize that I have so many setups to that armbar that I don’t even know them all – I’ll make them up on the fly,” Rousey said in an interview with the UFC following her debut.

“When you’re watching boxing and you see somebody knock someone out with a right hand every time, they’re not like, ‘Oh, they’re a one-trick pony.’ No, they have a billion different setups for that right hand. And just because it ended with a right hand on the face, it doesn’t mean it’s the same thing every time.

“And just because so many people are unfamiliar with grappling and they just see the armbar ending the same, they assume the setup’s the same, but if you look back at all those fights, I’ve jumped into that armbar from many different positions. It ends the same way, but the setups are always different. So they can prepare for a certain setup, but I’m always gonna think of more.”

Ronda Rousey

Ronda Rousey wrapped up her career in 2016, winning the Strikeforce and UFC bantamweight titles and going 12-2 along the way. Every one of her dozen victories came via finish with nine armbars and three TKOs.

“How do you go from being in the UFC, arguably one of the biggest stages in fighting, in combat sports, to then going on to fight an influencer?” Brooke told VanZant on The MMA Hour. “There’s a reason that [Floyd] Mayweather does it, it’s for money. I don’t think it’s necessarily for the passion anymore. You’re doing it for the money and who am I to judge?”

“I just don’t think that you can necessarily say it’s for the love of the sport,” Brooke said. “Because you are fighting an influencer. What do you gain from that? She’s gone from UFC, BKFC, to now fighting an influencer. I don’t know, in my head it’s not because she’s on a losing streak and she’s just like, ‘I want an easy fight.’ Is she underestimating me?”

We’ll find out in two days on DAZN.

To be immortalized on the wall in the city that I’ve stood on by one of the greatest to do it, and right by the Sky Tower, it’s fitting, it’s poetic, it’s awesome.”

Carlos Ulberg replaces Khalil Rountree set to fight Jamahal Hill at UFC 303 in June

Off the back of his impressive first round knockout win over Alonzo Menifield at UFC Fight Night St. Louis earlier this month, surging light heavyweight contender, Carlos Ulberg has reportedly accepted to replace Khalil Rountree on short-notice at UFC 303 next month, in a co-main event fight against Jamahal Hill.

Ulberg, the current number eleven ranked light heavyweight contender, featured just earlier this month in Missouri, turning in a blistering 12-second knockout win over the above-mentioned, Menifield in the pair’s reworked pairing. Earning a Performance of the Night bonus, Ulberg’s stoppage win came as his sixth consecutive victory.

As for former champion, Hill, the current number three ranked divisional contender headlined UFC 300 last month in a title grudge fight with Alex Pereira, himself suffering a thunderous opening round knockout defeat in his return to the Octagon for the first time in over a year.

News of Carlos Ulberg’s booking against Jamahal Hill in place of a suspension-strikened, Rountree, was first reported by The New Zealand Herald this Thursday evening.

Prior to his knockout win over Menifield, Ulberg a staple of City Kickboxing under the tutelage of head coach, Eugene Bareman, Ulberg had turned in notable wins over the likes of Ihor Potieria, and Da Un Jung – finishing both with knockout and submission wins, respectively.

As for Hill, the Dana White’s Contender Series product headlined UFC 283 back in January of last year on enemy territory in Brazil, snatching the vacant light heavyweight crown with a decision win over former champion, Glover Teixeira.

Khalil Rountree Jr. is out, Carlos Ulberg is in.

Just a few days after “War Horse” was forced to withdraw due to a wonky drug test, “Black Jag” has volunteered to step up and trade leather with former light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill in the UFC 303 pay-per-view (PPV) co-main event, locked and loaded for Sat., June 29, 2024 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

New Zealand Herald first reported the booking on Thursday.

Hill (12-2, 1 NC) is just a couple of weeks removed from his knockout loss to Alex Pereira as part of the UFC 300 extravaganza in “Sin City.” As for Ulberg (10-1), he captured his sixth straight win by planishing Alonzo Menifield at UFC St. Louis back on May 6. That gives both fighters just over a month to prepare for their UFC 303 showdown.

Which is probably going to end long before the final bell.

UFC 303 will be headlined by the welterweight collision between former 155-pound champion Conor McGregor and all-action lightweight contender Michael Chandler. Elsewhere on the card, Cub Swanson and Andre Fili hook ‘em up at featherweight, not long after Joe Pyfer and Marc-Andre Barriault collide at 185 pounds.

Khalil Rountree hit with two month suspension after testing positive for DHEA ahead of UFC 303

UFC light-heavyweight Khalil Rountree has been handed down a ban following positive drug tests.

Rountree had been booked to fight former champion Jamahal Hill at UFC 303, a fight which if victories could have seen him build a serious case to fight for the 205lb title shot. However, Rountree would release a statement last week in which he detailed he had tested positive for a banned statement and would be forced to withdraw from the contest

Yesterday the UFC would issue a statement which revealed Khalil Rountree’s tests had tested positive for “the exogenous origin of 5a-androstanediol, 5b-androstanediol and androsterone, all metabolites of DHEA.”

The statement would also state that Rountree had accepted a two month suspension but CSAD, the UFC’s testing agency, would cite a ‘massive oversight’ from a supplement manufacturer as the reason for the positive test.

“Rountree provided CSAD with shipping records, detailing that he received the supplement containing DHEA on May 2, 2024, just two days before he provided the May 4th sample. “Rountree also provided documentation from the owner of the clinic that sent him the supplement, reflecting that the company’s Brand Marketing Director sent Rountree some of the company’s ‘therapeutic blends’ supplements ‘without prior approval.’

“The owner described the mistake as ‘a massive oversight on our part.’ The evidence reflects that as soon as Rountree realized the mistake, he immediately notified UFC personnel, who immediately passed the information along to CSAD.

“CSAD consulted with SMRTL (Sports Medicine Research Testing Laboratory), who informed that Rountree’s May 4th sample result was consistent with the above facts and that Rountree’s short-term use of DHEA in the doses present in the dietary supplement did not provide any significant performance benefits.”

What’s next for Khalil Rountree?

While the statement confirms that Rountree unknowingly ingested a banned substance, athletes are still responsible for what they consume.

If a two-month ban is all he will receive, it should not impact his career too much. But it’s unclear if the UFC will look to rebook the fight against Hill, it would certainly be a big fight to miss out on for Rountree.

Will Khalil Rountree fight for a title?
