TJ Dillashaw does not see Aljamain Sterling as a real fighter.

Ahead of his return to competition against the current UFC bantamweight title holder, Dillashaw talked about Sterling’s unexpected win over Petr Yan.

TJ Dillashaw doesn’t believe Aljamain Sterling is a real fighter

In an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Dillashaw stated that he was surprised to see Sterling win and that he’s more of an athlete than a fighter.

“I definitely was picking Yan,” he said. “He wanted to fight me, he was very verbal that he wanted me next and I wanted to be there front row for a fight I thought he was going to win.

“I don’t feel like he gained that much more respect, the fact that he’s not like a dangerous fighter. He’s not someone you have to go out there and worry about getting finished or put to sleep. I’ve always known he’s great, he’s got some great skills in what he does.

“To me when I look at him, he’s not a fighter. He’s more of an athlete which you know our sport is professional athlete, but we’re all wrong to be fighters to not go out there and get that finish.”

Dillashaw is surprised to see Sean O’Malley fight Yan

Dillashaw talked about the upcoming bout between Sean O’Malley and Yan. While he does understand why the pairing happened, he doesn’t believe it to be on O’Malley’s achievements.

“Yeah, I’m surprised accolades-wise of him not even being in the top 10 getting to fight someone like Yan. But he’s done a great job of promoting himself. He’s gotten the attention, he does the stuff that a lot of us don’t want to do.”

“He’s fully a character, he’s doing the YouTubes, the Twitch, whatever it may be, and put himself out there and being colorful so he’s promoted himself hard that way and working hard, so more power to him.”

“I’m not sure it’s a great fight for him but maybe he’ll prove us all wrong.”

Dillashaw detailed his stance on Paddy Pimblett

Before Paddy Pimblett‘s latest win at UFC London, TJ Dillashaw had criticized “The Baddy” for gaining copious amounts of weight in his time off. He clarified his stance on the Scouser.

“The thing I’m worried about is how fat he gets after fight camps,” he added. “I don’t think he’ll be a world champion because of the fact that he’s got no dedication in between fights… if you blew up 30 pounds, how can you take a fight that fast or be getting better all the time.”

“Be in the f**king gym, you have the chance to make some serious cash right now and they’re going to start throwing you to the wolves. You’re going to start getting top 15, top 10, which I don’t know if he’s really ready for but it was a dick thing to say but I wasn’t trying to. That was my concern, he’s got this opportunity, he’s blowing it by being a fata**.”

TJ Dillashaw believes Petr Yan made some “big” mistakes against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 273 this past April.

Initially, Sterling won the UFC bantamweight title from Yan at UFC 259 in March of 2021. Sterling was hit with an illegal knee from Yan, which rendered Sterling seemingly unable to continue, winning him the title via disqualification.

They finally rematched last month, after Yan had captured an interim bantamweight title, unifying their championships. Sterling wound up taking the contest via split decision.

Speaking to Submission Radio, the former bantamweight champion Dillashaw offered his take on the matchup, as he journeys back to the 135-pound title himself.

Dillashaw pointed out some “big” mistakes made by Yan in the matchup, who he was picking to win the fight head of the event.

“I definitely expected Yan to win… Yan made some big mistakes and showed a lot of holes in his game. It was crazy to me that he could not get out of the body triangle, going in the wrong direction, and pretty much just focusing on not getting finished rather than winning.

“He was playing the long game, which he always does. He did that in the first round, too. He started slow… Aljamain was the only guy who really landed anything.

UFC 273 Results: Aljamain Sterling Takes Split Decision Over Yan

“Then the next two rounds, we all know what happened, Aljamain was a backpack on him for eight minutes. The only two takedowns he got, Yan gave up his back. Like, you know the guy, his strongest suit in martial arts is him on the back. He’s not a finisher, he’s not dangerous on the feet, so you just can’t let him take your back.

“His coaches were even telling him, ‘Don’t give up your back.’ First thing he did, even after the second round going into the third, right away gave up his back again. (He had) some brain farts on that.”

Dillashaw has ended a two-year suspension for the use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). His return was successful with a split decision win over Cory Sandhagen in July of last year.

Reportedly, Dillashaw is expected to be the next challenger to Sterling’s bantamweight championship at UFC 279 this September. Perhaps this would serve as an opportunity for Dillashaw to show Yan how it’s done.

UFC Bantamweight Champion Aljamain Sterling wants certain needs met before he signs on the dotted line for a fight with TJ Dillashaw.

A clash between Sterling and the former champion Dillashaw was thought to be booked for UFC 279 on Sept. 10. But contrary to preliminary reports, Sterling hasn’t signed his bout agreement yet as he looks for a more lucrative contract with the UFC.

During a recent video post on his YouTube channel, Sterling revealed that a fight with Dillashaw hasn’t been finalized.

“The one thing I want to disclose is there is no fight until there’s ink on paper,” Sterling said. “And as of right now my contract is exactly the same and usually when it’s not a title fight and when you win a fight, there’s an escalator. There’s been no escalator for this fight. I’d like to think that I did my part, did the right things, and even allowed myself to be the bad guy in the last outing with Petr Yan. I helped play up the storyline.

“So, one would think that being a company man would actually help you in the long run. I did my job, as of right now… I’m training, hoping that we can come to some type of agreement to get some type of pay bump which naturally happens in all the contracts.

“For me, I want to make sure we get the deal right before we just jump into another fight. At the end of the day, I climbed through the ranks, worked my ass off, and I played my position in terms of helping to promote the fights. I want to be a company man but also at the same time look out for my best interests.”

Sterling is coming off of a UFC 273 win over Petr Yan via a split decision. He earned the belt after Yan was disqualified for throwing an illegal knee in their first fight at UFC 259.

Dillashaw earned the planned title shot after earning a win over Cory Sandhagen last summer after a two-year layoff. He won the title over Cody Garbrandt before being handed a USADA suspension for EPO use.

Sterling was an adversary to many UFC fans who felt he was an undeserving champion. He played the role of a heel ahead of his rematch with Yan and seemed to embrace the hate from a portion of the fanbase.

UFC President Dana White and the rest of the brass have yet to respond publically to Sterling’s comments.
