Dillashaw Prepared For Sterling’s PED Attacks: That’s All He Has

UFC bantamweight TJ Dillashaw is prepared for the inevitable trash talk that will come his way if a fight against champion Aljamain Sterling comes to fruition.

At UFC 273, Sterling proved a whole host of doubters wrong by successfully defending his 135-pound gold against arch-rival Petr Yan. Having legitimized what had been a disputed reign up until the April 9 pay-per-view, “Funk Master” has now turned his attention to his next potential challenger.

It seems like that foe could be Dillashaw, a former two-time bantamweight titleholder and the current #2-ranked contender in the division. Following his victory in Jacksonville, Sterling used his time on the mic to call out the 36-year-old, who was in attendance.

If the matchup comes to fruition, it will represent Dillashaw’s second fight since returning from a two-year USADA suspension, which he was slapped with following his 2019 defeat to Henry Cejudo after testing positive for recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO).

While his comeback opponent, top-five contender Cory Sandhagen, didn’t address the incident too much in the build-up to their collision in the UFC Vegas 32 main event last July, it doesn’t seem as though the same will apply to Sterling.

During an appearance on DC & RC following UFC 273, Sterling discussed Dillashaw’s PED-usage, claiming “his entire legacy to me is tainted.”

Dillashaw: Sterling’s Trash Talk Is More Embarrassing Than His Striking

Following his positive test and in the years since, Dillashaw has been open and apologetic about his faults. Having served his suspension and returned to competition, the Californian has vowed not to let the mistake define his career and his life.

For that reason, Dillashaw isn’t concerned about the barrage of insults that could come his was relating to his use of performance-enhancing drugs ahead of a potential fight with the bantamweight king.

During an interview with ESPN MMA’s Brett Okamoto, Dillashaw slammed Sterling’s “cringey” attempts at trash talk, suggesting the champ has nothing to use against him aside from his past infractions.

With that in mind, the former titleholder believes he’s fully prepared for the verbal back and forth and went as far as to brand Sterling’s words as just as “embarrassing” as his striking skills.

“I mean, I’m totally prepared for it. We’re all gonna see that that’s the only thing he’s got,” said Dillashaw. “I mean, the guy is just — he took one out of (Henry) Cejudo’s book and became even cringier. I didn’t think anyone could get cringier than Cejudo, and he’s taken it a step further.

“He’s got nothing. All of his trash talk, whatever he’s gonna say, is just embarrassing. It’s the same as his striking,” added Dillashaw. “It’s embarrassing to be in the UFC with what he has to offer.”

Having just come off a heated build-up ahead of his rematch with Yan in Florida, it would appear there won’t be any let up for Sterling in that respect should Dillashaw be officially confirmed as his next challenger.

But given Dillashaw’s past and the public opinion on his suspension, perhaps “Funk Master” won’t be the villain this time around…

If this fight comes to fruition, who do you think will have their hand raised, TJ Dillashaw or Aljamain Sterling?

Dominick Cruz Mindblown That UFC Still Promotes TJ Dillashaw

Dominick Cruz is mindblown that the UFC promotes TJ Dillashaw as much as they do, compared to someone like himself.

Cruz appeared on a recent installment of the UFC Unfiltered podcast. During the episode, Matt Serra pointed out that TJ Dillashaw shouldn’t be praised for confessing to past performance-enhancing-drug usage when, as Serra put it, he only did so because he was busted. Cruz concurred and expressed frustration at how the promotion has treated Dillashaw since his return from the USADA suspension.

“You’re preaching to the choir, man,” Cruz told Serra. “I had to fight the guy on that drug. How about that? And I beat him on it. So nobody’s saying nothing about that, but that’s OK. It is what it is.

“The bottom line is: I think what blows me away is the UFC promotes that man over somebody like me who’s been healthy, clean, promoting the sport in a positive way, promoting the division in a positive way, and they’re just gonna throw him right in there in the mix.

“It’s mindblowing to me, to be honest. But that’s the way that they do business, and that’s their choice. It’s their business, not mine.”

Dillashaw and Cruz faced off back in January of 2016 with the UFC bantamweight title on the line. Cruz picked up the win via split decision to recapture the 135-pound title. As for Dillashaw, he was defeated by Henry Cejudo in January of 2019 when he dropped down to flyweight to challenge for the title.

Soon after, Dillashaw admitted to using PEDs ahead of the bout. He was subsequently handed a two-year suspension, which has since been served. Dillashaw returned to the Octagon this past July, defeating Cory Sandhagen via split decision.

As for Cruz, he currently finds himself on a two-fight win streak, hoping to get back into the title mix. Perhaps that will have him cross paths with Dillashaw once again.

What do you make of Cruz’s comments regarding the UFC still promoting Dillashaw? Do you agree? Sound off in the comments!

Despite their rocky relationship, Urijah Faber still thinks TJ Dillashaw deserves the next shot at the UFC bantamweight championship.

Recently, the UFC Hall Of Famer joined MMA Fighting’s Heck Of A Morning to offer his thoughts on the bantamweight division’s landscape. In regards to who will receive the next title opportunity against Aljamain Sterling, Faber explained why he thinks his former Team Alpha Male teammate should get the nod (h/t BJPenn.com)

“Man, that’s a great question,” Urijah Faber said. “Obviously, I would love to see [Dillashaw] vs. Aldo, but I would also like to see Aldo vs. ‘Aljo.’ I don’t think that T.J. needs to show that he’s not there yet, Cory Sandhagen could very easily be the champ, or a title contender himself.

“He’s an amazing fighter. They had a close fight and some people thought Sandhagen won. Right now, for relevancy, I think T.J. vs. ‘Aljo’ is the fight to make, and then Aldo gets the winner of that.

“I think a T.J. vs. Aldo fight would be huge as well, but you don’t have the hunk of metal on the line so it’s dulled down a little bit, and then Aldo lost to Petr Yan, so I think the story is still a T.J. vs. ‘Aljo’ fight, or an Aldo-’Aljo’ fight because Aldo is somebody that has taken that loss from Yan and it really lit a fire and he’s looked better than he ever has, so I’d like to see that, too.”

Dillashaw recently ended a two-year suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). In his return, the former 135-pound king topped Cory Sandhagen via split decision in July of last year. Now, Dillashaw is looking to reclaim the bantamweight title he never lost.

Of course, that would put him in a matchup against Sterling, who is currently on a seven-fight win streak. Sterling became the undisputed bantamweight champion with his unanimous decision win over Petr Yan in April.

A potential matchup between the pair would certainly be interesting. Dillashaw likely will have the advantage on the feet, while Sterling’s ground game has proven dominant over his current run.

Who do you think deserves the next nod at the UFC bantamweight title? And who are you picking in a potential fight between Dillashaw and Sterling? Sound off in the comments!

TJ Dillashaw doesn’t see UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling as much of a challenge ahead of their potential matchup.

Sterling retained the bantamweight title in a split decision win over Petr Yan at UFC 273. He earned the belt after Yan was disqualified for an illegal knee in their first fight at UFC 259.

Just days after Sterling controversially earned the title, Dillashaw and Sterling went at it on social media. Tensions have continued to build as Dillashaw works his way back to the Octagon.

Dillashaw most recently defeated Cory Sandhagen last summer following a two-year suspension for EPO use. He’s expected to be Sterling’s next title challenger.

During a recent interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Dillashaw gave a less-than-flattering review of Sterling’s skill set and recent wins. (h/t MMA Junkie)

“He’s good, don’t get me wrong,” Dillashaw said. “He’s got some attributes. He wouldn’t be where he is without being good, but he’s definitely not champion caliber. The guys that I’ve fought already in the past (are) much better than he is, a lot more dangerous. There’s no danger fighting Sterling. Has he ever even knocked anyone out?

“I don’t know. I didn’t even look at his record. It’s a guy that you don’t have to be worried about. There’s no way he’s gonna be out-grappling me. His striking is straight pathetic, so yeah, I’m surprised that he is where he is, and stylistically it’s a great fight for me.”

Aljamain Sterling Laughs At TJ Dillashaw’s Remarks

It didn’t take long for Sterling to get word of Dillashaw’s comments, as he responded by blasting the former 135lb champion.

“[TJ Dillashaw] who TF have you beaten that is soOoOoo much tougher than the guys I’ve faced?” Sterling replied. “This is Comedy Central. You should do stand up with [Henry Cejudo]. He’s your daddy, after he sonned your needled ass.”

Sterling and Dillashaw are expected to fight next later this year, barring some unforeseen circumstances. Dillashaw is still recovering from leg surgery after suffering an injury early in his fight with Sandhagen.

Dillashaw is looking to become a three-time UFC bantamweight champion, while Sterling is looking to further cement himself on the UFC’s pound-for-pound list.

What is your early prediction for a possible Aljamain Sterling vs. TJ Dillashaw fight?

TJ Dillashaw Aljamain Sterling

TJ Dillashaw doesn’t have high expectations for Aljamain Sterling.

TJ Dillashaw is currently out recovering from surgery. He is, however, planning his return and in doing so wants a shot at the title. Dillashaw has only had one fight in the last three years due to a suspension and injury, but he feels his résumé speaks for itself and he wants the next available title shot.

The thing is, there is already a title fight scheduled. Finally, after a few rescheduled dates, champion Aljamain Sterling will be taking on interim champions Petr Yan at UFC 273 in April. Dillashaw took a moment to break down how he sees that fight playing out in a conversation with ESPN.

“My money’s on Yan,” Dillashaw said (via MiddleEasy). “The way that fight went down and to kind of see Aljamain just break and give up… he really didn’t have much for him. I was kind of expecting Sterling to give him a lot more trouble in the grappling aspects and the takedowns. Yan just kind of shrugged them off. [Sterling] had no strength. I don’t know if there’s much, you can change with that.”

The way the fight between Sterling and Yan ended, with a disqualification knee to a downed opponent, left a lot of questions unanswered. Sterling will have another opportunity to show the world that he is the rightful owner of that 135-pound belt. It is clear that Dillashaw believes that Yan is the one to beat in that matchup.

“Yan’s a killer. You see the way he fights, he stays real tight, stays clean, and he’s got the mentality that he’s a fighter,” Dillashaw said. “You got those competitors, you got athletes, and then you got fighters. Guys like myself and guys like Yan are the full package, you do all of them.”

Sterling has been taking quite a bit of heat from all sides since he won the belt in the way he did back in March. Dillashaw might have his chance at Sterling if “The Funk Master” is victorious at UFC 273. If that fight takes place, Dillashaw believes he has what it takes to defeat him.

“I feel like Sterling is more of a competitor or an athlete. He doesn’t have that fighting spirit in him. He’s a little bit weak when it comes to that last thing.”

Who do you think will bring him the belt at UFC 273, Sterling or Yan?
