UFC president Dana White revealed that a rematch between lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor is more than possible.

The two met in a heated grudge match at UFC 229 in October last year that saw Nurmagomedov come out on top with a fourth-round submission victory. McGregor has since called for the rematch numerous times — but given his drop in stock as well as his overall inactivity, it never seemed likely to happen.

But that doesn’t mean it’s dead. White appeared on the Rich Eisen Show recently and admitted that a sequel could happen provided both men win their next fights. Nurmagomedov is set to defend his title against Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 next on April 18.

McGregor, meanwhile, will return to action against Donald Cerrone in the UFC 246 headliner on January 18.

“He’s gotta beat Cowboy Cerrone, which is a very tough fight, especially at 170, without Cowboy having to cut weight,” White said (via @jedigoodman). “Then, Khabib has to beat Tony Ferguson.

“If both of those things happen, then yeah, I think we can make the rematch.”

In a separate interview, White added the reason why McGregor was fighting at 170 as opposed to 155:

“Conor is going to fight at 170 for this fight,” White added. “Mainly because he doesn’t want to have to cut the weight to 155. Him and Cerrone have both fought at 170.

“He’s hoping that he beats Cerrone and can turn right around and fight Khabib as quick as possible. So he didn’t want to make the cut twice.”

While that serves as good news for McGregor, one person definitely won’t be happy with White’s comments — Justin Gaethje.

Do you think it would be fair for McGregor to get a rematch with Nurmagomedov?

Khabib Nurmagomedov Lacked Motivation Against McGregor, Poirier, But Not For Ferguson

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov claims he lacked motivation against Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier — but that won’t be the case against Tony Ferguson. UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov claims he lacked motivation against Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier — but that won’t be the case against Tony Ferguson.

Nurmagomedov is set to face Ferguson in the UFC 249 headliner on April 18 which takes place in Brooklyn, New York. “The Eagle” will be looking for a third title defense following his wins over McGregor and Poirier.

Nurmagomedov notably submitted the former featherweights, with the fight against McGregor at UFC 229 being the biggest non-boxing pay-per-view of all time. Still, Nurmagomedov says he lacked the drive that he has now ahead of his fight with Ferguson:

“I will train hard,” Nurmagomedov said in a recent media scrum in Dagestan (via @MMARusContext). “With every fight, I gain more and more experience. I’m getting older, I am 31. I think it’s the peak age of a fighter’s career. Of course, I will train more for this fight because I got a worthy opponent. He is very good and very dangerous opponent.

“And to be honest, I lacked this motivation for my last fights. Iaquinta, Conor, Barboza, Poirier. They’re not the same as Tony Ferguson. That’s why I feel that fire burning inside me again.”

Given how dominant Nurmagomedov was in his last few fights, it’s a scary prospect to think that he lacked motivation in those fights.

Then again, he is facing arguably the best lightweight in the world other than him in Ferguson who is on a 12-fight winning streak. Hopefully, everyone in the combat sports world gets to see them collide.

What do you make of Nurmagomedov’s comments?

One of the most highly-anticipated lightweight fights of all time has been booked yet again.

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov will defend his title against Tony Ferguson on April 18. Nurmagomedov is undefeated in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career at 28-0. Ferguson is on a ridiculous 12-fight win streak at the moment, looking as dominant as ever.

Recently, UFC Hall Of Famer Michael Bisping took to his podcast, “Believe You Me,” to offer his thoughts on the matchup. Bisping said Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson is a “huge booking.” (H/T BJPenn.com)

“That’s a huge booking,” Bisping said. “Finally, Khabib vs. Ferguson. Well, I say finally, it’s not is it? I mean they booked it four times in the past. That’s crazy. But everybody wants to see this fight and we’ve talked about this ad nauseam, everybody knows if anyone deserves a title fight it’s Tony Ferguson.

“He just beat Cerrone, he’s on a 12-fight win streak, he’s beating people in style. Anthony Pettis, the list goes on. He deserves his title fight and he’s getting his title fight.”

Going a bit further with the magnitude of Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson, Bisping predicts the fight will draw big pay-per-view (PPV) numbers.

“Because this fight was booked four times in the past, the anticipation for it is so huge,” Bisping said. “So I feel like this will do huge numbers. I think it will be a big, big pay-per-view. And the timing actually, if McGregor was to beat Cerrone, I think the timing would work out for Conor to fight the winner but he has gotta get past Cerrone.”

Do you think Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson will draw big PPV numbers?

One would be wise not to tell Tony Ferguson that a bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov is cursed.

Ferguson is set to challenge Nurmagomedov for the UFC lightweight title on April 18 in Brooklyn, NY. While fight fans are excited, some feel this bout is cursed. It has been booked several times in the past but never came to fruition due to injuries and illnesses on both sides.

Tony Ferguson Blasts Those Who Say Khabib Fight Is Cursed

Ferguson was a guest on ESPN’s Ariel Helwani MMA Show. During his appearance, “El Cucuy” had some choice words for those who think a bout with “The Eagle” is cursed (via MMAMania.com).

“F*ck no, you can stop right there. Don’t even get the fans going on that sh*t. We’re going to set the pace right now – I want the encouragement,” Ferguson told Ariel Helwani. “F*ck you, don’t watch this sh*t, don’t buy our stuff. Go watch Bellator or some other bullsh*t. Go find some knock-off copy of what he got going on here … this is the OGs, I’m the original genius right here.”

Ferguson was last seen in action back in June at UFC 238. He earned a second-round TKO victory over Donald Cerrone. The victory extended Ferguson’s winning streak to 12. He is scheduled to be Nurmagomedov’s third UFC lightweight title challenger. Nurmagomedov is a perfect 28-0 in his pro MMA career.
