Paddy Pimblett predicts finish of Tony Ferguson at UFC 296 I've got a statement to make

Slated to make his first Octagon walk in a year at UFC 296 in December, promotional-perfect lightweight contender, Paddy Pimblett has plans to land a first round stoppage over former interim champion, Tony Ferguson, claiming he has a certain “statement” to make his return to action.

Pimblett, a former undisputed Cage Warriors featherweight champion, has been sidelined since he co-headlined UFC 282 back in December of last year, landing a hugely-controversial unanimous decision win over Jared Gordon.

The victory saw Pimblett improve to 4-0 since landing in the Octagon back in 2020, with the Huyton native securing a trio of consecutive stoppage victories over Luigi Vendramini, Kazula Vargas, and Jordan Leavitt.

Booking his comeback to the Octagon last month, Pimblett is set to fight the above-mentioned, Ferguson at UFC 296 in December, looking to inflict a disappointing seventh straight loss on the Oxnard veteran, who is without a victory since a 2019 win over Donald Cerrone.

Paddy Pimblett plans first round finish of Tony Ferguson at UFC 296

Defending the matchup – as has his manager and Cage Warriors leader, Graham Boylan, Pimblett claims he has a “statement” to make against the former interim champion, predicting a first round stoppage triumph to boot.

“I’ve got a statement to make, it’s been a while since I’ve had so long outside the cage,” Paddy Pimblett told The Schmo during a recent interview. “By the time I fight, I’ll have over a year out of the cage. The amount of training I’ve done to get better and I’m just a different fighter. It’s gonna be ‘The Baddy’ 2.0, a new mythical fighter is going to get unlocked.”

“I want to be champ, lad, of course,” Paddy Pimblett explained. “It goes without saying. [I] can’t get ahead of myself, especially after my last performance. All I’m thinking about now is coming out and finishing Tony Ferguson in the first round. Make a statement, let everyone know what they were missing, and then I’ll start looking at ranked opponents in the UFC.”

It’s safe to say there is no love lost between undefeated prospect Muhammad Mokaev and fast-rising UK star Paddy Pimblett.

On October 21, Mokaev is scheduled to step back inside the Octagon for a clash with veteran standout Tim Elliott. Ahead of his return, Mokaev appeared on the Believe You Me podcast with Michael Bisping to discuss his upcoming contest and what may come next should he collect his 11th straight victory at UFC 294.

Needless to say, it didn’t take long for Mokaev to come up with a name when asked who he would like to fight if given the chance.

“I want to f*ck [Paddy Pimblett] up bad! I just don’t like this guy,” Mokaev said. “I beat a couple of guys from his gym he’s still upset about that,” (h/t MMA News).

Muhammad Mokaev Hopes to See Tony Ferguson Retire After UFC 296

Pimblett will make his first appearance of 2023 come December 16 when the Liverpudlian makes his long-awaited return for a showdown with former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson. Asked for his thoughts on the matchup between Pimblet and Ferguson, Mokaev said:

“Tony is good. Like, Tony is not like people put a cross around him but I mean he was doing good against Chandler, he was doing good. I think he can beat Paddy. Paddy is not like great fighter. Like, his chin is up. He shoots like I don’t know. He lost last fight too.”

Fight fans have been heavily critical of the matchmaking with many suggesting that the bout is putting Paddy Pimblett in a lose-lose situation while others believe Ferguson would be best served by hanging up his gloves for good after dropping six straight inside the Octagon.

“I think he should retire after this fight,” Mokaev said. “He earned a lot of money. What else he need?”

If Tony Ferguson comes up short against Pimblett at UFC 296, ‘El Cucuy‘ will tie B.J. Penn’s record for the longest losing streak in UFC history.

Tony Ferguson glitched during UFC fight with Beneil Dariush his striking paused it was awkward

Beneil Dariush has voiced his concern for past-foe, former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson, claiming he witnessed what he described as a “glitch” in their UFC 262 clash back in 2021, calling for the Oxnard native to truly consider retiring from the sport.

Dariush, the current number four ranked lightweight contender, has been sidelined since he featured in the co-main event of UFC 289 back in June, suffering a first round ground strikes TKO loss to former undisputed champion, Charles Oliveira in the pair’s championship eliminator.

The defeat saw Iranian-born grappler, Dariush’s impressive eight fight winning run halted – having most recently turned in a one-sided unanimous decision win over recent UFC Vegas 79 headliner, Mateusz Gamrot back in October of last year.

Embarking on a stunning winning streak between 2018 and June of this year, Dariush turned in an impressive unanimous decision win over former interim champion, Ferguson two years ago – almost submitting the Californian with a third round kneebar in Houston, Texas.

Beneil Dariush claimed Tony Ferguson “glitched” during their UFC 262 clash

However, when reflecting on his bout with The Ultimate Fighter victor, Dariush claimed he witnessed somewhat of a “glitch” in the system for Ferguson, pleading with the 39-year-old to retire from mixed martial arts.

“As far as Tony Ferguson goes, I think Tony should hang it up but it’s his decision because from my understanding, in his training, he feels better, he’s doing better, it’s just for some reason, fight day, it’s not showing up, you know,” Beneil Dariush told Luke Thomas during a recent interview. “And he has reasons for every one of the fights but from what I felt personally, when I was striking with him, and we didn’t do a lot of striking, there was a weird, awkward pause in his striking, almost like a glitch in the system.”

“So, I didn’t like that,” Beneil Dariush continued. “I personally think he should retire. But, it’s Tony’s choice.’ (H/T MMA News)

Already booked to return following a sixth straight loss against Bobby Green at UFC 291 in July, Ferguson is slated to feature on the main card of UFC 296 in December, taking on the returning polarizing lightweight, Paddy Pimblett in an end-of-year clash.

UFC lightweight, Tony Ferguson, discusses his recent career rough patch and how it has impacted him

Ferguson could potentially be heading into his last fight in the UFC when he takes on Paddy Pimblett on December 16. The once interim lightweight champion is now on  six-fight losing streak after suffering the now infamous loss against Justin Gaethje in May of 2020.

El Cucuy‘ is a fan favrioute, and his recent skid along with the damge he has taken during it has been a little hard to watch for some, especially when in comparison to a prime Ferguson. Despite a lengthy win streak and impressive performances, the 39-year-old was very unlucky not to get a undisputed title shot during his heyday.

Tony Ferguson details losing streak

Talking to ESPN, Ferguson discussed his recent losing streak and how it impacted him personally and while he shows no signs of wanting to retire, admits that it is difficult seeing how it impacts those closets to him.

“You know what the f*cked up part is? None of that punching or kicking, the eye poke; none of that hurts,” Ferguson said. “The one part that hurts is going back and then seeing my family’s faces. Because, I’m telling you, since I was a kid, it’s always been gold medals. I’m not even bullsh*tting. It’s always consistently been that. (H/T MMA News)

“So it’s like, ‘Do you really wanna do this?’ And that’s the part that hurts, is when I get that question asked to me,” Ferguson continued. “I get all like, ‘What are you talking about?’ Like, ‘Hey, you’re retired, right?’ F*ck you, no I’m not retired. You go retire. I have sh*t to do it. I’ve been competing for 35 years. I’m not even close to being done. What it’s gonna take is a great team.”

Paddy Pimblett

UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley sees Paddy Pimblett’s fight with Tony Ferguson as a lose-lose situation for the Liverpudlian.

Last month, Dana White revealed that the much-maligned matchup would take place as part of the promotion’s final pay-per-view of the year, UFC 296. The announcement immediately drew the ire of fight fans who disparaged the decision to put Ferguson, a fighter on a six-fight losing streak, against Pimblett, a budding superstar riding a six-fighting win streak.

Sean O’Malley echoed those same sentiments in a recent YouTube video suggesting that Pimblett has nothing to gain and a lot to lose by taking on Ferguson.

“Initial reaction, I’m like, ‘Goddamn, that’s a lose-lose for Paddy,’” O’Malley said. “You go out there and beat Tony—who’s really good, but on a six-fight losing streak—so if you beat him, you’re not going to get credit for beating f*cking Tony Ferguson. You’re going to get credit for beating a guy that’s like, you should beat him, but it’s a dangerous fight. It’s not that easy of a fight.

“It’s going to be a tough fight. Tony could 100 hundred percent win this fight. Now you’re coming off a loss to a guy—I mean, at least it’s still T-Ferg, but it’s like, is it T-Ferg?” (h/t MMA Fighting).

Tony Ferguson Has Been Fighting Far Tougher Opponents Than Paddy Pimblett

By the time Paddy Pimblett steps inside the Octagon on December 16, it will have been a full year since he escaped with a highly controversial unanimous decision win over Jared ‘Flash’ Gordon at UFC 282. The victory moved ‘The Baddy’ to 4-0 under the UFC banner and a winner of six in a row.

Meanwhile, Ferguson will enter the bout not having entered the win column in more than three years. Though to be fair, his near-record-setting streak of losses has come against a murderer’s row of lightweight killers including Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, Beneil Dariush, Michael Chandler, Nate Diaz, and Bobby Green. Looking at the strength of schedule for ‘El Cucuy‘ and the lackluster performance from Pimblett in his last outing, many believe this could be the fight that puts Tony Ferguson back into the win column.

That would be a disastrous result for Pimblett who is still trying to erase the memory of a fight that, by all accounts, he should have lost.

Tony Ferguson not even close to being done with MMA calls for retirement after UFC 296

Former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson has claimed he’s “not even close to be being done” with mixed martial arts, amid calls for the Oxnard veteran to consider retiring from active competition in the wake of a worrying six-fight losing skid.

Ferguson, a former interim lightweight titleholder under the promotion’s banner, is slated to make his second Octagon walk of the year at UFC 296 in December, taking on the polarizing contender, Paddy Pimblett in a main card clash.

Last time out, Ferguson slumped to 0-6 in as many fights since 2020, dropping a third round arm-triangle submission loss to Bobby Green in a one-sided defeat at UFC 291 in July in Salt Lake City.

Tony Ferguson once again shuts down calls for him to retire from MMA

And despite calls for The Ultimate Fighter victor to consider calling time on his career should he lose – or even emerge with a victory against Pimblett, Ferguson insists he once more has no plans to hang up his storied gloves.

“I have nothing against the kid,” Tony Ferguson told ESPN. “Patrick (Pimblett) seems like a pretty legit dude. He gets pretty big, his standup is okay, but his ground game is a lot better. I love fighting internationals, it’s cool, I love it.”

“I have sh*t to do,” Tony Ferguson explained. “I’ve been competing for 35 years. I’m not even close to being done. What it’s going to take is a great team that got me to my championship belt, my interim belt. I had a great team. But holding on to certain things car sometimes be very detrimental to yourself, which sometimes you just got to let go and hold onto the things that hold onto you very tight. And that goes faith, family, and friends.”
