UFC lightweight contender Justin Gaethje revealed he was offered a fight with Tony Ferguson, only to turn it down.

A Ferguson vs. Gaethje fight is a dream matchup for many in the combat sports world, which the latter has also been open to in the past. It could have even happened last month at UFC 238 in Chicago. The problem was Gaethje was only given four weeks notice for that fight, which he deemed insufficient time to prepare for “El Cucuy.”

In the end, Donald Cerrone was given the call, and would later lose to “El Cucuy” via TKO (doctor stoppage). However, Gaethje is still open to a fight with Ferguson, as well as Khabib Nurmagomedov in the future:

“They called me to fight Tony [but] it was four weeks notice,” Justin Gaethje told Aaron Bronsteter in a recent interview. I can’t do that. I can’t go in there compromised. It’s a huge opportunity to miss out on but I asked them if they could push it until Saturday [UFC 239] and they couldn’t do it. ‘Cowboy’ got the bid.

But yeah, I would love to fight Tony. I want to fight the Russian. I got to get through Tony, or through one of those guys.”

Ferguson would be the ideal next opponent for Gaethje. However, “The Highlight” feels the former interim champion is deserving of getting the next title shot:

“I think Tony earned his shot at the title,” Gaethje added. “I think he would be foolish to fight me or anybody before he fought the winner of Khabib and Poirier. So yeah, that’s my answer.”

Gaethje, Ferguson Toughest Opponents For Khabib

Many feel the toughest opponents for the undefeated Nurmagomedov would be one of Ferguson or Gaethje.

Gaethje absolutely agrees with that as he believes both of them present a lot of problems for “The Eagle”:

“I do agree with that,” Gaethje responded. “Absolutely. Tony’s dangerous on his feet and he’s probably the most dangerous from his back. And physically, as far as slashing you up with elbows.

So it’s something Khabib would definitely have to worry about. Can’t just go in there and sit on top like he does and be boring. He’s going to have to work and Tony might cut him up when he’s on the bottom. And I can stop takedowns. I’ve been stopping takedowns my whole life and I hit hard as f*ck so we’ll see.”

Joe Rogan Dubs Tony Ferguson ‘Scariest Guy’ At Lightweight

There’s no doubt that Tony Ferguson is one of the most dangerous athletes inside the UFC’s Octagon.

However, longtime UFC commentator Joe Rogan has dubbed “El Cucuy” as the “scariest guy” at 155 pounds. Speaking with former UFC fighter Yves Edwards on the latest edition of his podcast, “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Rogan explained why he believes Ferguson is the baddest man at lightweight:

“Tony Ferguson is an animal,” Rogan said. “An animal. He’s the scariest guy at 155 in my world. He doesn’t get tired. The ‘Cowboy’ fight freaked me out. ‘Cowboy’ looked like Tony had bricks in his gloves. His face was all busted up, Tony didn’t look like he had a scratch on him, Tony wasn’t even tired.

“It’s crazy man, he has insane power, man. It’s like, it’s a weird thing. Because Tony does stuff to people and he doesn’t get tired.”

Rogan went on to further explain just how impressive Ferguson’s gas tank is, recalling what he saw from the former interim champion during his fight with Donald Cerrone:

“Cause the ‘Cowboy’ fight, I’m telling you man, I watched him from the moment they stopped the fight – after the second round – I’m watching him, and he goes back to his corner – ‘Cowboy’s’ face is a mess. He’s just beating the sh*t out of ‘Cowboy,’ he goes back to his corner, his stomach isn’t even heaving. He’s not breathing heavy.”

Ferguson has been gunning for a title opportunity for quite some time now. Unfortunately, injuries to both himself and opponents have plagued his title aspirations. He once captured the interim lightweight title, only to injure himself prior to his scheduled unification bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov last year.

Now, Ferguson has racked up a ridiculous 12-fight win streak, with his latest coming by way of TKO over Cerrone. With Nurmagomedov set to unify his title with interim champion Dustin Poirier in September, perhaps Ferguson will be next in line for the winner.

Do you agree with Rogan that Ferguson is the “scariest guy” at lightweight?

UFC President Dana White has responded to a certain claim regarding who will be next in line for a title shot in the lightweight division.

Khabib Nurmagomedov faces Dustin Poirier at the UFC 242 pay-per-view (PPV) event later this year. Many fight fans believe that Tony Ferguson should be next in line for a title shot. While talking on Instagram live recently, White set the record straight by stating that the promotion won’t make the call on who is next in line until UFC 242 takes place:

“He just looked phenomenal in the fight [against Donald Cerrone]. I just posted something the other day about his last seven opponents. The guy’s a stud and he’s in a good place right now mentally and physically and we’ll see how this thing plays out in September and then we’ll go from there,” White said (H/T to MMA Fighting).

“Everybody’s acting like I’ve denied Tony his shot at the title. It’s just that he’s had a bad string of luck and things haven’t gone his way. But everybody’s terrorizing me like I’m not giving him what he deserves. If you’re a fan of the sport, you saw how this whole thing played out. That’s how we got where we are now.

Dana White Responds

Despite having one of the most impressive win streaks in recent memory under the UFC banner, a title shot continues to elude Ferguson. After putting together the lengthy winning streak, Ferguson’s latest fight ended in controversial fashion. Ferguson beat Donald Cerrone in a lightweight bout at the UFC 238 PPV event at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

At the end of the second round, Ferguson landed a foul strike. Cerrone blew his nose in between rounds and his right eye was swollen badly. The fight was stopped by the doctor. There had been talk of doing a rematch, but the more appealing option would be to have Ferguson take on the winner of Khabib vs. Poirier.
