Khabib’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, believes that his client fighting former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson would be an easy fight. That is a strong statement to make but Ali has never had an issue with speaking his mind.

UFC President Dana White has made his stance known regarding the next fight for Khabib Nurmagomedov. Although a rematch against former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor makes sense, he would like Ferguson get the next title shot.

At the end of the day, Abdelaziz wants to get Nurmagomedov his biggest payday possible. In his mind, Ferguson “cannot move the needle” when it comes to pay-per-view buys.

“I think it took 11 or 10 fights for (Nurmagomedov) to become champion,” Abdelaziz said to MMAJunkie. “It’s the longest winning streak outside Tony. Now, you can’t be like, ‘Fight somebody who is not going to help you sell pay-per-view.’”

At the end of the day, what is next for Khabib all comes down to the decision made by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. That call will be made on January 29th for his punishment in the role that he played in the UFC 229 brawl. When it comes to Ferguson, Abdelaziz anticipates an easy paycheck for the champ but it won’t be his biggest payday.

“Tony Ferguson is an unbelievable fighter, but I’m telling you, he’s one of the easiest fights for Khabib out there,” Abdelaziz said. “He’s sloppy. He’s slow. Khabib will beat him. He will put a beating on him, a worse (beating) on him maybe than (he did to Conor). The fight will happen, but when it will happen, I don’t know.”

Tony Ferguson responds to the latest callout made by fellow top contender Dustin Poirier through the power of Twitter. It all started once Poirier voiced his frustration with the lightweight division as there is a hold-up at the top. The reason for that is due to Conor McGregor and UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov being on the sidelines. Until the NSAC makes their ruling regarding their involvement in the UFC 229 brawl, these two stars aren’t allowed to fight.

This leads us to Ferguson and Poirier as they are the next fighters in line for the strap. UFC President Dana White even tossed out two potential ideas for these stars. That would be to have Ferguson challenge Khabib for the strap. On the flip side, McGregor would fight Poirier at the same time. Then the winners of these fights would compete against each other. It would be like a mini lightweight tournament.

This leads us to Ferguson responding to the latest callout by Poirier who started it when he sent out this first tweet:

“Just woke up and read theres gonna be more waiting around at the top of the lightweight division. Let’s give the fans the violence they deserve @TonyFergusonXT. Let’s go @ufc !!! Stop holding up my weight class!”

The former UFC interim lightweight champ fired back with his own tweet and doesn’t appear to be interested in making that fight happen.

“I Liked You Better When You Were Quiet Kid. Don’t Ruin A Good Thing You Got “Goin’… Diamond” @DustinPoirier TonyFergusonMMA Is Tops, Much More Efficient Than @TheNotoriousMMA & @TeamKhabib In The Same Day. I Already Know How To Beat You By The Way You Tweet. Sit Down.”

The UFC’s lightweight division is in a very interesting predicament at the moment.

As of this writing, two title challengers stick out like a sore thumb. Those are Dustin Poirier and Tony Ferguson. What these two men have been able to do inside of the Octagon as of late has been nothing short of incredible. However, the argument certainly could be made that Ferguson deserves the nod first. He is currently on an 11-fight win streak and was recently stripped of his interim lightweight title due to injury.

Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is awaiting punishment for his involvement in the post-UFC 229 melee against Conor McGregor’s team. He won’t be booked until his punishment from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) is settled. With that being said, this puts the lightweight title picture – more specifically, Ferguson and Poirier – at a stall. In the meantime, Poirier has an idea of how both men can keep busy:

Speaking to MMA Junkie Radio recently, Poirier explained his call-out of “El Cucuy”:

“I just need clarity on what’s next for me,” Poirier said. “I know some of the stuff is out of the UFC’s hands. I’m not blaming the UFC. But just the whole picture. Let’s get this (expletive) going.  I’m sick of this. I want to fight Tony. And if it’s not Tony, good for Tony, he’s (expletive) more than earned his shot at Khabib. He’s definitely next in line for the world championship.“He’s ahead of me. I agree. But if that’s not going to happen, let’s let the two best guys who are available go at it.

“Or let me and Conor go at it.”

The prospect of a rematch with Conor McGregor is interesting. McGregor knocked Poirier out in their first meeting at featherweight back in 2014. The Irishman has gone on to become one of the biggest stars in all of sports, and a former two-division UFC champion. Meanwhile, Poirier has thrived since moving up to lightweight, propelling himself into title contention:

“It’s a fun fight for the fans and for both of our careers,” Poirier said. “And it makes sense. But I don’t know what makes sense in this (expletive) company any more.”

Tony Ferguson calls out Max Holloway for a fight at lightweight after he retained his UFC featherweight title over Brian Ortega. In the headliner of the UFC 233 pay-per-view event, Holloway busted up Ortega to the point where his left eye was closed shut.

As a result, the doctor stopped the fight and Holloway was awarded the late TKO win. The event went down on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson was keeping a close eye on this fight as he took to Twitter to note that he would fight Holloway. There is one stipulation to go along with this. He wants UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov next.

In case that doesn’t happen as Ferguson thinks he’s ducking him. Then he would like to fight Holloway at what would likely be at lightweight. He wrote the following:

“Woooooooooo!!!!! Good Job Both Fighters!!  Love To See That Kind Of Entertainment!!! @BlessedMMA #ufc231 ???? Enjoy The Victory, If @TeamKhabib Ducks Me Let’s Run It – Respect.”

During the post-fight presser, Holloway also seemed open to the potential showdown against Ferguson.

“We’ll see what happens,” Holloway said (H/T to MMAFighting). “That’s a fun fight. You guys watched Embedded, somebody called me Tony. We’ve got a bone to pick.”
