Tony Ferguson is ready to take down a bear if it means protecting his family whilst out in the wild.

That’s the mentality ‘El Cucuy‘ will attempt to bring with him when he makes his long-awaited return to the Octagon this Saturday night. Ferguson, a former interim lightweight world champion, will look to climb back into the win column after coming up short in his last five outings. Tony Ferguson will meet lightweight standout Bobby Green as part of the stacked UFC 291 main card in Salt Lake City.

Before stepping back into the cage, Tony Ferguson spoke to members of the media during the UFC 291 media day on Wednesday. During his time, ‘El Cucuy’ spoke about his training and specifically noted an incident where he found himself tracking a bear. When prompted for more information, Ferguson revealed that he began tracking the animal while on a camping trip with his family.

“It’s blades and shades. I don’t f*ck around,” Ferguson said while brandishing a knife from his pocket. “I have to protect my camp. So when I’m out there, and my family was out there too, they walked. I had my wife and my kid when we were tracking and I had two different places.

One at the south part of the hill and I had one at the north part. So I had two points of access. So when we were out there and I saw the cans going out there, it used to be funny. We used to say, ‘Hey you know what? If you guys have a chance and see a bear, run down the hill as fast as you can.’ Well, it turned into reality when my guy over here rolled in. And when he rolled in was the same time that I saw the bear, and we scouted him.”

Tony Ferguson Used the Opportunity to Get Back to a ‘Rocky’ Style of Training Ahead of Octagon Return

Tony Ferguson detailed his adventure scouting the bear, revealing that they had tracked it back to its water and food source, though ‘El Cucuy’ made it clear that they had no intentions of hurting the animal. It was all about testing himself out in the wilderness with very few resources.

“I need to have that. I needed that ‘Rocky’ style, where I needed to f*ckin’ get that grunge again,” Ferguson said. “And with the bear, it wasn’t like I wanted to go and hurt him, but I wanted to scout him. I wanted to see how good I was and I’m pretty f*cking good. Found his water table. Found his food supply. Found where his route was. Found where everything was, and boom. There it goes. And on our way out, he gave us a little salute.”

Tony Ferguson is 15-6 inside the Octagon with all, but one of those losses coming in the last three years. Prior to that, ‘El Cucuy’ was on a 12-fight win streak that spanned eight years. Ferguson’s last appearance inside the Octagon came at UFC 279 last September where he suffered a fourth-round submission defeat against fellow fan favorite Nate Diaz.

Tony Ferguson dismisses talk of retirement ahead of UFC 291 I'm barely hitting my prime

Former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson has claimed he is still in his fighting prime ahead of his return to the Octagon at UFC 291 this weekend, shutting down any potential plans for a retirement from combat sports.

Ferguson, a former interim lightweight champion under the banner of the UFC, has been sidelined since he headlined UFC 279 back in September of last year, suffering his fifth consecutive loss in the form of a fourth round guillotine choke defeat to Nate Diaz in an impromptu welterweight headliner.

Tony Ferguson denies talk of any potential retirement

Making a lightweight division return this weekend, the Oxnard native takes on fellow veteran striker, Bobby Green on the main card of UFC 291, and despite riding a career-worst run – after previously embarking on a division-best 12-fight winning run, Ferguson insists he has no intention of calling time on his storied career.

“I feel at this point in time in my life, I’m barely hitting my prime, which is crazy,” Tony Ferguson told assembled media ahead of UFC 291. “One of my coaches, Juan, earlier we were doing mitts between interviews and I told him, ‘I’d be getting up eatly, I have to lay down, I know I have to lay down.’ And I got up and did my interview, and I was like, ‘Hey, is the room open. He went down and said yeah, I said, ‘I’d be right there, bring your mitts.’ I didn’t even wrap up, and I hit pads.”

“Nobody else is going to tell me (to retire),” Tony Ferguson explained. “They can propose to say, “Oh, Tony, whatever. He’s going to retire.’ No, motherf*ckers. F*ck you. I’m going to be done when I want to be done. But I’m also going to have to do what I have to do to get to where I want to get. Five fights and a title, baby.”

Tony Ferguson vows he's back in a different way ahead of UFC 291 fight Bobby Green

Former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson attempts to prevent a stunning six-fight losing skid in his return to the division this weekend at UFC 291 – admitting he is “back in a different way” amid a return to prior training routines ahead of his bout with Bobby Green.

Ferguson, a former interim lightweight champion, has been sidelined since he headlined UFC 279 back in September of last year in an impromptu welterweight main event with fellow veteran, Nate Diaz, turning in an impressive performance before a fourth round guillotine choke lsos to the Stockton native.

The defeat came as Ferguson’s fifth consecutively, following back-to-back defeats against Michael Chandler, Beneil Dariush, Charles Oliveira, and Justin Gaethje – a far cry from form which saw him embark on a division-best 12-fight winning run and an interim title clinching win prior to 2020.

Tony Ferguson looks to snap a five-fight losing run in his UFC 291 return

And returning to lightweight limits for his UFC 291 outing with fellow Californian veteran, Green this weekend in a main card clash in Salt Lake City, Ferguson appears to have taken things back-to-basics, with a return to a ‘Big Bear’ training regiment.

“We were staying up in Big Bear around like 72, 7,400 feet up in the air, training, puking, dragging sh*t, picking up sh*t and throwing it, battling bears,” Tony Ferguson said during an episode of UFC 291 Embedded.

“This feels good, man,” Tony Ferguson explained. “It feels good to be back; back in a different way. I love all you guys, but I’m doing this for me now. (Transcribed by MMA News)

Prior to his 2020 standing TKO loss to Gaethje, Oxnard native, Ferguson had turned in a string of victories over the likes of Gleison Tibau, Josh Thompson, Edson Barboza, Rafael dos Anjos, Anthony Pettis, Donald Cerrone, and landing an interim lightweight title against Kevin Lee back in 2017.

Dan Hooker so f*cking offended by offer to fight Tony Ferguson in UFC return

Ahead of his Octagon return this weekend at UFC 290 during International Fight Week, lightweight striker, Dan Hooker claims he was “so f*cking offended” by a recent offer to fight the faltering former interim titleholder, Tony Ferguson.

Hooker, the current number twelve ranked lightweight contender, has yet to return to action since featuring against Peruvian grappler, Claudio Puelles at UFC 281 back in November of last year Madison Square Garden – stopping the upstart with a third round body kick TKO win.

Dan Hooker fights Jalin Turner at UFC 290 this weekend

Slated to return earlier this year against the eye-catching, Jalin Turner, Hooker suffered a fractured hand ahead of the bout – forcing his withdrawal, however, meets the former in a rebooked fight this weekend at UFC 290.

Snapping a two-fight losing skid to lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev and featherweight contender, Arnold Allen with his stoppage win over Puelles, Hooker, a staple of City Kickboxing, revealed a potential bout with the veteran, Ferguson was proposed to him – one at which he duly scoffed at.

“I broke my hand and then I was getting back into training, easing back into training,” Dan Hooker told Submission Radio. “And then I think someone fought and my manager asked, ‘What about this guy?’ Like a top contender, I can’t remember who it was. But I messaged him and was like, ‘What about this guy for the next fight?’ He replied, ‘Oh, we asked for Tony Ferguson.’ I was so f*cking offended.”

“That sparked me,” Dan Hooker explained. “I was like, ‘Nah, f*ck this.’ The doctors were saying you got to wait another month for your hand before you can get back into training. I said, ‘F*ck that.’ I went and sparred the next day because I was so offended.”

Himself slated to make his comeback at UFC 291 at the end of this month, Oxnard veteran, Ferguson is booked to fight fellow lightweight stalwart, Bobby Green in Salt Lake City, Utah.
