Tony Ferguson got a response from longtime rival Khabib Nurmagomedov, the latest in a series of verbal jabs lobbed at one another recently.

Nurmagomedov and Ferguson were scheduled to face each other in the Octagon no less than five times, but the bout never came to fruition for a variety of reasons. With Nurmagomedov happily retired and Ferguson looking for ways to recover from a four-fight losing streak, we’ll likely never see the two square off in the cage. However, both fighters have expressed interest in coaching on opposite sides for a season of The Ultimate Fighter.

The possibility of ‘The Eagle’ and ‘El Cucuy’ competing as coaches on TUF seems to have rekindled the rivalry. Ferguson got things going by taking a jab at the former champion, comparing him to pop star Justin Bieber.

“Hey Khabieber, you done with your world tour yet About time you man up and face a real coaches’ challenge. How about a pie-eating contest fatty? Nom nom nom, time’s time to make some real nose buddy foo foo, 29-1. I win – the champ.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson Have Reignited Their Long-Running Feud

Nurmagomedov clapped back tweeting, “I’m waiting for you to wake up,” referring to the brutal knockout Ferguson suffered against Michael Chandler at UFC 274 in May.

Fans online are certainly enjoying the verbal sparring between the two lightweight icons. Even UFC president Dana White has taken notice, admitting that he is open to the idea of the two coaching on a season of The Ultimate Fighter. With fans generally unhappy with the lackluster season of TUF currently airing, Nurmagomedov and Ferguson could be exactly what the series needs to return to its glory days.

Khabib Nurmagomedov could be returning to the UFC against Tony Ferguson in a different setting as hinted by Dana White.

Former UFC Lightweight champion Khabib had an unblemished record inside the cage with 13 wins coming under the banner. There was a time when both Khabib and Ferguson racked up 12-fight UFC win streaks and were indisputably two of the best 155-lbs of their time. Having been matched up against one another five times in the past, not a single bout came to fruition.

Dana White is interested in Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson TUF Season

After Khabib announced his retirement from the sport in October 2020, his dream fight against Ferguson was declared to be one of the biggest fights that got away. However, there may still be a way for these two to compete.

Last month, Ferguson expressed his desire to compete against ‘The Eagle’ in any sporting format, be it grappling or another form of an athletic contest. In a recent appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, ‘El Cucuy’ proposed the idea of coaching a season of The Ultimate Fighter opposite Khabib.

The undefeated Dagestani voiced his support for the idea and even offered to propose a deal on his own promotion, Eagle FC.

In a recent appearance on The Spinnin Backfist MMA Show, UFC President Dana White seemed to be interested in the prospect. While he did appear to be worried about having two coaches that won’t likely fight each other, he could get behind the idea if the fans want it.

“So you’re telling me, you guys as fans, media, whatever it might be, like the idea of two guys possibly coaching that wouldn’t fight each other?” White responded Tuesday when asked about Ferguson’s proposal.

“I’ll consider it. Congratulations. … I will absolutely entertain that idea.”

White continued to joke about having the two get mad enough at each other so they can actually make the fight happen.

“Hopefully they’ll get p*ssed off enough at each other that they actually want to fight and I can make them fight,” White joked. “I’m in. You sold me.”

Ferguson pitched the idea of coaching TUF opposite Nurmagomedov in the future. Nurmagomedov went on to accept Ferguson’s offer, although Nurmagomedov is retired from the UFC and is focused as a promoter of Eagle FC.

While Nurmagomedov and Ferguson never got to face off in the UFC Octagon, they remain on each other’s nerves, as proven by recent social media banter. It is arguably the biggest fight in UFC history that never came to fruition.

During a recent interview with Barstool Sports, White seemed open to making a Nurmagomedov/Ferguson TUF season happen.

“I’ll consider it,” White said. “… I will absolutely entertain that idea.

“Hopefully, they’ll get pissed off enough at each other that they’ll actually want to fight.” (h/t MMA Junkie)

Nurmagomedov retired from fighting after a win over Justin Gaethje in his last lightweight title defense at UFC 254. He left the Octagon undefeated and defended his belt against some of the best all-time lightweights, including Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier.

Ferguson is on a four-fight losing streak, with his most recent loss coming against Michael Chandler at UFC 274. Despite his recent struggles, he remains a fan favorite in the UFC.

The current TUF season featuring Julianna Peña and Amanda Nunes is nearly at its conclusion, and White may consider making a Nurmagomedov/Ferguson season next on the show’s agenda.

Former interim UFC lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson has once more teased a potential future fight against former two-division titleholder, Conor McGregor – claiming that he would not be letting the Dubliner off easy, just because a prior fight evaded the pair.

Tony Ferguson, who currently sits at #9 in the official lightweight pile, suffered his fourth consecutive loss at UFC 274 last month in Phoenix, Arizona.

Featuring on the main card of the Footprint Center event in the ‘Copper State’, Ferguson initially started quite brightly against one-time title challenger, Michael Chandler, dropping the Sanford MMA native to steal the opening round, however, suffered a brutal second round front kick knockout loss.

The defeat following a trio of prior one-sided defeats opposite Beneil Dariush, as well as former undisputed champion, Charles Oliveira, and former interim gold holder, Justin Gaethje

As for McGregor, the former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion, headlined UFC 264 back in July against former interim champion, Dustin Poirier in the pair’s trilogy rubber match – fracturing his left tibia, resulting in an opening round doctor’s stoppage TKO defeat.

The loss following a January knockout loss to Poirier on ‘Fight Island’ – with McGregor now tasked with rebounding from a two-fight losing run for the first time in his professional mixed martial arts career.

Tony Ferguson yet again issues a call out to Conor McGregor

Receiving another call out from Ferguson, the Oxnard native, who previously alluded to a fact that a fight with McGregor was impossible due to the fact they shared the same management firm – mentioning the Miller-Ayala act, insisted the 33-year-old was not yet off the hook.

“”McNugget Monday’s Commence”,” Tony Ferguson tweeted, accompanied by a video on his official Twitter account. “We’re not letting you off that easy kid -Champ -CSO- @vaynersports.”

In his most recent victory, Ferguson managed to land a second round doctor’s stoppage TKO victory against common-foe, Donald Cerrone at UFC 238. The triumph came as Ferguson’s whopping twelfth consecutively.

McGregor’s most recent victory also came against Colorado veteran, Cerrone, stopping the one-time lightweight title challenger at the welterweight limit with a blistering 40-second knockout in January 2020.

Tony Ferguson has respect for Islam Makhachev, the teammate of longtime rival Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Ferguson was a guest on “The MMA Hour” last month and discussed potentially burying the hatchet with Nurmagomedov. “El Cucuy” said he’ll always joke around about Nurmagomedov, especially since he still believes there was controversy surrounding one of his weigh-ins.

This is something Ferguson has been very outspoken about when it comes to American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) fighters, including Daniel Cormier. However, when it comes to Islam Makhachev, things are different.

“I’ll joke around and I’m going to continue to joke around because that’s how I am with my stuff,” Ferguson said. “Because, you know, obviously, he [Khabib] cheated on the scale too over there.

“But it’s one of those AKA things where they do that, and they get away with it. With Makhachev, he’s different. He’s different. I got respect for that.

“So, out of everything, and all due respect, I’m still giving Khabib the finger, but until that day when we do shake hands like man — maybe it’ll never happen, so, props.”

In regards to Ferguson, he’s currently on a four-fight losing streak at the moment. His last outing resulted in a second-round knockout loss to Michael Chandler. It was the first time in his career that Ferguson was knocked out unconscious.

As for Makhachev, things are going far better. He’s currently on a 10-fight win streak and is the No. 4-ranked lightweight in the world. Makhachev is likely up for a contender’s fight next or could even go right into a title bout against Charles Oliveira.

Tony Ferguson thinks he would get the better of top lightweight contender Charles Oliveira if they were to cross paths again.

Ferguson is on a four-fight losing skid that has included losses to Oliveira, Justin Gaethje, Beneil Dariush, and most recently Michael Chandler. He is in search of a new team as he looks to get back on track in his MMA career.

Ferguson fell to Oliveira via a unanimous decision at UFC 256. A win over Oliveira would’ve put him right back in the thick of things in the lightweight title picture.

In reply to a fan’s recent question on Twitter about whether an Oliveira rematch or a fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov would be a tougher challenge, Ferguson assessed why he feels he fell short against Oliveira.

“Nothing personal, but I really didn’t train anything for Charles,” Ferguson admitted. “He’s A Good kid who needed a boost. I’ll see him again. Any of them & with real training I win. Khabibi on the other hand would be a fun one the fans would like.”

Ferguson didn’t elaborate on his training conditions before the Oliveira fight, but he certainly feels he wasn’t in peak condition.

Following his recent knockout loss to Chandler at UFC 274, Ferguson sounded optimistic regarding his UFC future. His last win came against Donald Cerrone at UFC 238 back in Aug. 2019.

As for Oliveira, he’s now the top lightweight contender after defeating Gaethje at UFC 274. He was forced to vacate the title due to missing championship weight.

Ferguson wants to run it back with Oliveira and recently declined an offer from Oliveira to train together. Regardless of how some may feel about Ferguson’s claims, he’s certainly not lacking confidence ahead of his eventual return to the Octagon.

Do you think Tony Ferguson could beat Charles Oliveira in a rematch?
