Former undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov has responded to recent criticizm from former interim titleholder, Tony Ferguson – urging the Oxnard native to focus on his own career ahead of UFC 274 this weekend, and leave him alone.

Khabib, who was booked to fight Ferguson on no less than five separate occasions, most recent of which in April 2020, never shared the Octagon with the former interim gold holder – in arguably the most awaited fight in promotional history to never occur.

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson is considered one of the biggest failed fights in the sport’s history

The Dagestan native would retire from professional mixed martial arts in October of that year following a successful title unification victory over Justin Gaethje, calling time on his professional career, boasting an undefeated 29-0 record.

In the time since his most recent cancelled fight with Khabib, Tony Ferguson has slumped to three consecutive losses, dropping defeats to common-foe, Gaethje, current champion, Charles Oliveira, and the streaking, Beneil Dariush. Ferguson returns this weekend in Phoenix, Arizona this weekend against Michael Chandler.

Speaking on his failed prior matchups with Khabib ahead of UFC 274 this weekend, Ferguson told the former champion’s teammate, Daniel Cormier that his training partner had continued to run away and avoid a fight with him.

“I’m gonna be real, the last few fights I didn’t prepare like I should have,” Tony Ferguson said. “I didn’t take the opportunities I wanted to . I’m not gonna say on purpose, but I wanna be real. There was enough film out there for Khabib (Nurmagomedov) to take a fight and the p*ssy’s still running.”
Replying to Ferguson’s comments on Cormier’s official Instagram account, Khabib pointed to Ferguson’s recent skid of three losses, and urged him to just focus on his own fighting career.

“Last 3 years, Tony (Ferguson) has not won a single round in the UFC,” Khabib Nurmagomedov posted. “Leave me alone and focus on yourself stupid guy.”

Chandler: Win Over Ferguson & A Gaethje Crowning Will Solidify Title Shot

UFC lightweight contender Michael Chandler is hoping that two results go his way on the UFC 274 main card this weekend.

While a pair of title fights will head Saturday’s pay-per-view slate in Phoenix, Arizona, one blockbuster collision of entertaining veterans is threatening to steal the show. Setting the table for Rose Namajunas and Charles Oliveira’s title defenses will be a matchup pitting Chandler against fan favorite Tony Ferguson.

With both men riding losing skids and in danger of falling further behind the elites at 155 pounds, this contest is set to be crucial for the careers of “Iron” and “El Cucuy.”

But despite being another setback away from a three-fight losing skid and a 1-3 record in the UFC, Chandler believes he’s as close as one victory away from another shot at staking his claim on the lightweight throne.

Chandler: Who’s Not Gonna Wanna See Me Go 5 Rounds With Gaethje?

During a UFC 274 media day interview with ESPN MMA’s Brett Okamoto, Chandler discussed what he’s expecting for his future should he dispatch Ferguson inside the Footprint Center this weekend.

Despite the lengthy winning streaks amassed by top fives Beneil Dariush and Islam Makhachev, whose likely fight later this year is seen by many as a title eliminator, the former three-time Bellator champ believes there isn’t a single fan who would argue against him challenging the victor of Saturday’s main event, especially if ‘and new’ is read out.

“I do think there’s gonna be a very large, explosive fight for me this fall, this winter. Whether it’s Conor (McGregor), whether it’s for the title,” claimed Chandler. “There’s not an MMA fan on the planet who watches ESPN MMA that doesn’t want to see me fight Charles Oliveira again or Justin Gaethje again, especially Justin Gaethje. In a five-round title fight, are you kidding me? Everybody wants to see that.

“This sport is all left up to time and circumstance. It would be the right time for me again, obviously,” added Chandler. “And the circumstances would be right, people wanna see me rematch those guys.”

With that in mind, as well as his own success, Chandler is rooting for the most recent of his former opponents to have his hand raised this weekend. If all goes to plan, “Iron” is expecting to boast number one contender status by next week.

“My money’s on Justin Gaethje, which, one again, solidifies me as the number one contender to fight him next by the end of the year,” concluded Chandler.

According to our very own staff predictions for UFC 274, Chandler may struggle to leave Arizona with both of his desired results…

Do you think Michael Chandler vs. Justin Gaethje 2 will be the fight to make should both men emerge victorious this weekend?

Tony Ferguson, Justin Gaethje Call For Health Insurance From Promotion At UFC 274 Press Conference

Following his tirade against the UFC’s practises, and promotional president, Dana White earlier this week during his media availability, former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson called for the promotion to implement health insurance for the fighters on the organization’s roster – with those requests echoed by fellow former interim lightweight titleholder, Justin Gaethje.

Tonight’s press conference in the ‘Copper State’ ahead of this weekend’s UFC 274 card at the Footprint Center was manned by UFC play-by-play commentary leader, Jon Anik, who explained how the aforenoted, White would be present in Phoenix, Arizona later in the week.

Fielding questions from assembled media at the press event, defending lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira – who headlines the card against Gaethje, questioned if critics of his had actually consumed his recent rallying wins against both Dustin Poirier and Michael Chandler – as he continues to receive questions about his heart and will to traverse adversity.

With attention switched to main card features, Tony Ferguson, and the aforenoted, Chandler, the two shared a joke regarding reigning welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman’s attempt to emulate Ferguson for his former Sanford MMA teammate, Chandler – with both jokingly agreeing that the Auchi native left a lot to be desired with his imanari roll setups.

Speaking of both Gaethje and defending undisputed best, Oliveira, Tony Ferguson – who attempts to snap a three-fight losing skid against Chandler, insisted that future re-runs with the challenger and champion most definitely interest him in the future.

When asked if he would echo prior calls for an increase in post-fight bonus amounts akin to his calls ahead of UFC 262 last May, Tony Ferguson, instead explained how he would rather the UFC implemented a health insurance policy for fighters, explaining how he needed to think of the long term financial stability of his family.

“I’d say, let’s get some insurance for these fighters,” Tony Ferguson said during the UFC 274 press conference. “Let’s raise the tier up. You know what I mean – when they (the UFC) did the Reebok deal, they had tiers, so how many fights you had inside the Octagon, I say we do the same thing, man. We all have families, we all have to support our systems – let’s do that sh*t, man. I don’t know, Dana’s (White) not here but – insurance.”

Momentarily, Gaethje insisted that he liked the idea of another increase to the fighter bonus system for UFC 274, before taking sides with Ferguson and calling for the introduction of health insurance.

“I want bigger bonuses, bigger bonuses,” Justin Gaethje interjected. “And health insurance – but bigger bonuses.”

Replying to the Arizona fan-favorite, Ferguson said, “I’m a grown-ass man, I’ve got to look after my family, so insurance is cool for me.”

Tony Ferguson compared Dana White and UFC officials to “drug dealers” earlier this week

Challenging for strawweight spoils in Saturday’s co-headliner, Carla Esparza – who attempts to land a second career win over now-champion, Rose Namajunas, claimed that she would defeat the 2014 version of herself, who had just landed the inaugural UFC strawweight crown – adding to prior Invicta FC success.

Earlier this week, former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier claimed that he would probably face the victor of the high-profile main card clash between Chandler and Ferguson next, however, when drawn for an answer on his interest in fighting the Louisianan next, Chandler remained coy on the matchup, averting his full attention to this weekend’s bout with Ferguson instead.

Tony Ferguson is not believing Dustin Poirier’s claims.

Tony Ferguson is preparing for a very important fight. He will be facing Michael Chandler on the main card of this weekend’s UFC 274 event. The winner of this fight could be getting a big push towards a title shot in the near future. Chandler is sitting in the number five spot in the rankings while Ferguson is occupying number seven.

Both men continue to have title aspirations and being on the same card as the lightweight champion Charles Oliveira and challenger Justin Gaethje puts them in a great position.

However, despite the talks of title shots from both camps, there is another man who has expressed interest in fighting the winner of Chandler and Ferguson, that man is Dustin Poirier.

When Tony Ferguson was asked about Poireir’s intentions to face the winner as part of UFC 274 media day, he didn’t hold back.

“He’s full of shit. I’m gonna be real. He said he wanted to fight me many times. And I gave the opportunity to him,” he said at UFC 274 media day. “And then somebody gave him more money to be able to fight. The kid’s full of shit. Nothing against Poirier or any of the other fighters, but I’m worried about Chandler.”

Ferguson and Poirier were once matched together for a brief amount of time. They were rumored to meet at UFC 254, but that meeting never took place.

Ferguson is coming into this bout with Chandler having lost his last three, including to both Oliveira and Gaethje. If he wins a fight with Poirier could be the best option for him. Ferguson is a former interim champion and has proven in the past that he has the skills to beat some of the best out there.

Conor McGregor has analyzed Tony Ferguson and his supposed “issues.”

Tony Ferguson is fighting on this weekend’s UFC 274 card. Ferguson, who rarely speaks publically, had quite a bit to say during his fight week media obligations. Aside from going in on the UFC, fighter pay, and his opponent Michael Chandler, Ferguson was critical of how with his career has panned out recently.

Ferguson has experienced three losses in a row and he spoke about changes he had to make recently within his fight camp.

“I surrounded myself with all the wrong kind of mentality,” he said at media day. “I’m not going to say anything bad about anything but leading up to my last fight had to think about when one of my boxing coaches tells me not to throw a jab and everyone is telling me to knock him out. It was kind of confusing going out there. It was kind of like I froze right?”

This speech caught the ear of Conor McGregor among others. McGregor took it upon himself to lend a bit of unsolicited advice Ferguson’s way in a since-deleted tweet.

“Tony Ferguson, who changes representation around 4 times a year, is saying it’s someone else fault he is in the position he is in. How many bridges do you burn before you look yourself in the mirror and say “maybe it’s me that’s the issue”
God bless you pal, I’ll say a prayer.”

As mentioned, the tweet has since been deleted and Ferguson has not responded to it at this point, but one might think he could be setting up a fight between these two.

If Ferguson should win against Chandler at UFC 274 McGregor might be sniffing around. These two have been calling each other out in the past and both seemed interested in the potential at one point or another.

Do you agree with what Conor McGregor had to say to Tony Ferguson?
