Michael Chandler has promised to put on a show for the fans against Tony Ferguson at UFC 274 this May 7 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

Talking to Helen Yee Sports about his next bout, Chandler revealed Ferguson to be the first guy his team had approached when he made the switch from Bellator last year. Although UFC announced the fight last week, no contracts have been signed with only a verbal agreement in place between the two.

In his relatively short run in the organization so far, Chandler has become a fan favorite following his Fight of the Year performance against Justin Gaethje.

He’s become known for the signature Michael Chandler in your face flair’ and is sure to put on a show for the fans as he tends to throw the game plan out the window in favor of a less surgical brawl.

“There’s not a fan on earth who wouldn’t want to see me re-match either of those guys (Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira),” said Chandler on the possibility of getting a title shot. Chandler and Ferguson have shared both opponents as he looks determined to become the UFC champion by the year-end given he beats Ferguson at UFC 274.

Michael Chandler confident Gilbert Burns will get the win

On fellow Sanford MMA teammate Gilbert Burns fighting Khamzat Chimaev on the same card, Michael Chandler said, “There’s not a lot of guys that I would tote as people who live a championship lifestyle. When I see the way Gilbert Burns carries himself, the way he shows up early to practice, he stays late, the way he also leads with a servant’s heart.”

“Khamzat is a beast. It’s a great test but I think it’s a very dangerous fight for Khamzat because I think Gilbert Burns is championship material. He’s unbreakable and I think he’s going to go out there and win,” said Chandler as he showed his support for Burns.

Who do you think will come out victorious at UFC 274, Michael Chandler or Tony Ferguson?

The fan favorites ‘El Cucuy’ and Chandler, are set to square off in a lightweight bout where both fighters desperately need a win. This addition is a huge draw for the card that already headlined a fantastic lightweight championship fight between Charles Oliveira and Justin Gaethje. Sports Illustrated Justin Barrasso was the first to break the news about the bout.

Many fans have been excited for this matchup for months, as it was teased multiple times with no official date set. Ferguson and Chandler are two of the most explosive fighters in the division and have some fantastic standup. The bout is sure to set off some fireworks, the same way that Chandler vs Gaethje did at UFC 268 four months ago.

Both Tony ferguson and MichaelChandler are on losing streaks going into The fight

‘Iron’ Mike Chandler bursted on the UFC scene with a huge knockout of Dan Hooker and earned himself a title shot in only his second fight in the promotion. Since then, Chandler has dropped his last two bouts to Charles Oliveira in the title fights and Justin Gaethje. The Gaethje fight was one of the best fights in recent history.

Ferguson has also struggled as of late, dropping his last three fights. While he was once a fighter on a multi-year winning streak that surpassed double digits, injuries have caught up to the 38 year old legendary lightweight. Although, Ferguson has only lost to the absolute elite of the division. He has lost to the current champion, Charles Oliveira, the challenger and former interim champion Justin Gaethje, and possible title contender Beneil Dariush. Ferguson was mostly dominated in all those fights, losing to Gaethje via TKO and the other two by unanimous decision.

‘El Cucuy’ seems to think he is the draw to the PPV, adding to the hype of the event.

A lightweight showcase between former title challengers Tony Ferguson and Michael Chandler has been agreed on for UFC 274.

Sports Illustrated was the first to report the fight’s booking.

Chandler vs. Ferguson had been hinted at by UFC President Dana White during a recent Q+A on ESPN+ with Laura Sanko. The fight will take place the same night as the lightweight title matchup between Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira.

Chandler last fought against Gaethje at UFC 268, losing via a unanimous decision in arguably the best fight of 2021. Before that, he had lost his first UFC title shot against Oliveira for the vacant belt at UFC 262. A win over Ferguson could get Chandler back into the lightweight title picture.

Ferguson is looking to snap a three-fight losing skid and hasn’t won since defeating Donald Cerrone via doctor’s stoppage at UFC 238. He lost to Beneil Dariush in a lopsided bout at UFC 262 after dropping fights to Gaethje and Oliveira in 2020.

Chandler made his UFC debut back at UFC 257 after a long, accomplished career in Bellator. He passed his first UFC test with flying colors, earning a first-round knockout of Dan Hooker.

Ferguson has been a mainstay of the lightweight division and earned the interim title over Kevin Lee at UFC 216. He was slated to face Khabib Nurmagomedov on five different occasions during his career but the fight was canceled due to various circumstances.

The Chandler vs. Ferguson winner will move one step closer to a title shot. UFC 274 takes place on May 7 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, AZ.

UFC lightweight Tony Ferguson has denied the claim he turned down a short-notice fight against top-five contender Islam Makhachev.

In the main event of UFC Vegas 49 this past weekend, fans were set to witness a clash between Makhachev and fellow elite 155lber Beneil Dariush, with a shot at gold expected to be at stake.

Unfortunately, the Iranian-American was forced out less than 10 days before the February 26 showdown after suffering a broken fibula in training. In his place stepped up the always-game veteran, Bobby Green.

During fight week ahead of the card, which took palace at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Makhachev implied Ferguson turned down an offer to step in and replace Dariush, who Ferguson had fallen to a defeat against in his last outing at UFC 262 in May 2021.

Now, in a post on Twitter, “El Cucuy” has provided a different take, claiming he was more than willing to enter the cage at UFC Vegas 49, but never received a call to do so from the UFC.

“We Were Offered To Fight @RdosAnjosMMA On Short Notice For #ufc272 We We’re Moar Than Ready To Step In And Save The Fight & Perform ? We Were Also Ready To Beat Fatheads Primo @MAKHACHEVMMA This Past Weekend But No Call Was Received, TUF?Times ?? -CSO- ????? # ?

Interestingly, Ferguson also revealed he’d been offered a short-notice clash with Rafael dos Anjos at this weekend’s UFC 272 pay-per-view. The Brazilian former champion was set to face Rafael Fiziev in the co-main event, but the Kyrgyzstani was forced out after testing positive for COVID-19 at the start of fight week.

With the search underway for a replacement, it appears Ferguson is an option. However, he’ll seemingly be battling Makhachev for a place on the card.

Fresh off a first-round TKO victory over Green, a triumph that marked his 10th straight success, the Dagestani threw his name into the hat for a 170-pound contest against long-time rival dos Anjos. It remains to be seen which direction the promotion will choose to go in.

Who would you rather see step in to face Rafael dos Anjos, Tony Ferguson or Islam Makhachev?

Michael Chandler has revealed that he is currently training for a fight with Tony Ferguson, despite not having confirmation that ‘El Cucuy’ will be his next opponent.

During a recent interview with Shakiel Mahjouri of CBS Sports, Chandler said doesn’t have a date or a signed contract but is “all systems go for a Tony Ferguson fight.”

“As far as how far along it is, I’m assuming that is my next fight sometime this summer. I don’t know the exact date or the location, but that’s who I’m training for. That’s who I’m watching film of. That’s who I’m thinking of fighting. Getting in shape, laying a good groundwork, good foundation right now to go into a nice hard training camp for a fight this summer. I’m all systems go for a Tony Ferguson fight, so we’ll see when we get the contract signed and get this thing, moved along and get announced.

Chandler is hoping he can face off against Ferguson sooner rather than later.

“I don’t know if I want to wait till July, but I would definitely like to fight on an International Fight Week. So maybe I go run through Tony before that and then I can fight again in July. We’ll see.”

It appears Chandler won’t have to wait too long to fight again as, during a recent Spotify Greenroom appearance, Ariel Helwani claimed that the fight between Chandler and Ferguson is set to take place on May 7th at UFC 274.

Michael Chandler & Tony Ferguson Will Battle To Stay Relevant At 155lbs

This is a fight between two of the older guys at lightweight who are currently riding losing streaks. Another loss for either man would probably call time on their title aspirations.

Ferguson failed to win a round as he dropped three successive fights against Gaethje, Oliveira and Beneil Dariush. He’ll be desperate to rediscover the form that made him one of the most successful 155lb fighters in UFC history.
