Tony Ferguson has laid out a warning to Charles Oliveira — don’t show up too overweight or their fight is off.
The pair of lightweight contenders meet in a pivotal three-round bout in the co-main event of UFC 256 this weekend. The fight was notably made on three weeks’ notice with Oliveira — currently on a seven-fight winning streak — deciding the rewards far outweighed the risks.
However, if he thinks he can use the excuse of the short notice to come in three to four pounds overweight, he’s mistaken. Ferguson claims he won’t fight Oliveira if that is the case.
“At the beginning of this camp, I made a conscious decision to trust in what got me here and the results are amazing,” Ferguson wrote on Instagram. “I have been competing in athletics for over 30 years and making weight the same amount of time. Weight is good and eating right.
“I am counting on the Brazilian Charles Oliveira and others to come in overweight like usual. So I’m calling it now. Case law. Short notice fight, Charles Oliveira will not cut weight all week and show up 3-4 pounds over weight and use the excuse of a short notice fight. If he shows up that much overweight, we are not competing. So crew, make sure you visit the kid’s page and encourage him to make weight if you want to see a fight.”
Oliveira has a history of missing weight as he has done so four times. However, all of them came when he was competing at featherweight.
Since moving up to lightweight, the Brazilian hasn’t really struggled to make the 156-pound limit for non-title bouts. Could the short notice affect things? We’ll find out during weigh-ins on Friday.
Despite all the changes, UFC 256 promises to be one heck of a card. Despite all the changes, UFC 256 promises to be one heck of a card.
The last pay-per-view event of the calendar year takes place December 12 and will see Deiveson Figueiredo defend his flyweight title against Brandon Moreno in the headliner.
In the co-main event, Tony Ferguson is back as he looks to return to the win column against the surging Charles Oliveira in a pivotal lightweight bout.
Other standout bouts on the main card include a lightweight encounter between Renato Moicano and Rafael Fiziev, a middleweight bout between Kevin Holland and Jacare Souza and a heavyweight collision between former champion Junior dos Santos and Ciryl Gane.
All in all, it’s a stacked card which is all the more impressive when you consider two title fights in a women’s featherweight clash between Amanda Nunes and Megan Anderson and a bantamweight bout between Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling were scrapped from the card.
What do you think of the card? And what are your thoughts on the official UFC 256 poster?

Charles Oliveira will be looking to secure his eighth consecutive win when he faces Tony Ferguson at UFC 256 on Dec 12th, a win which he believes will secure his place as next in line for a shot at the UFC’s Lightweight Division.
Oliveira and Tony Ferguson will be the co-main event of UFC 256 in Las Vegas. “Do Bronx” believes that a win will earn him a title shot.
Speaking to MMA Fighting, Charles Oliveira said: “It’s very clear: Whoever wins this fight is the next title contender, I have to stay focused and concentrated. He was coming off 12 wins in a row and I think he made a mistake against Justin Gaethje, so we can’t make mistakes in there.”
The Lightweight division is looking very entertaining at the moment after the recent retirement of the undisputed lightweight champion and pound for pound number one UFC fighter, Khabib Nurmagomedov. However UFC boss, Dana White has constantly stated that he believes the undefeated fighter will return to the octagon.
Charles Oliveira went on to say that he intends to finish Tony Ferguson.
“Winning this fight I’ll be the next challenger, no doubt. Seven wins in a row at the moment. It will be eight after this, and I don’t plan on leaving it in the judges’ hands. It will be eight finishes in a row. There’s no way I have to wait. I’m the next challenger.”
The Brazilian has no doubt about who is opponent will be for the vacant belt in 2021 as well. Oliveira believes he will fight the winner of the Conor McGregor Vs Dustin Poirier clash at UFC 257, a fight which he believes McGregor will win.
Charles Oliveira also believes that Khabib will stay retired.
“Conor McGregor retired many times, Paul Felder retired many times; they all retire and come back,” Oliveira went on to say. “But we’re talking about Khabib. His family, his religion, the man says he’s retired. Someone told me that he sworn on his father’s grave that he wouldn’t fight anymore. If that’s true, there’s no way he comes back. If he comes back, he would be going over his own word and his own father. If that’s true, the guy won’t come back. It’s over.”
He first has to get past Tony Ferguson who recently lost for the first time in 12 fights against Justin Gaethje. Oliveira is aware of the challenge in front of him.
“He’s super tough, he has his own fighting style, he spins with the elbow, the arm, the leg. He shoots for takedowns in a completely different way. We know the difficulties that this fight brings, the problem coming my way, but this is my moment. My time has come. There’s not much to do, just train and dedicate.”
“I’ll have the perfect strategy for this fight and I’ll make it happen. He’s tough and has an incredible cardio, so let’s go.”
Charles Oliveira has the most submission victories in UFC victory but he is aware of ‘El Cucuy’s’ ground game.
“Good jiu-jitsu, if you give him an opening he goes there and taps you. You have to respect that. We can’t fool around because I can make a mistake and he submits me too. Fights are unpredictable, brother, anything can happen. But, like I said, this is my moment, this is my time. I’ll be 100 percent focused for this fight. I won’t make mistakes up there.”
“His jiu-jitsu, his wrestling, his muay Thai, the crazy spinning things he does out of nowhere — I’ll be ready for all that.”

Charles Oliveira plans on shocking the world next month.
A win against a fighter of Ferguson’s level would not only put Oliveira on an eight-fight winning streak, but also put him in line for a lightweight title shot in the post Khabib Nurmagomedov era.
The rewards clearly outweigh the risk for “Do Bronx” who will be taking the fight on considerable short notice.
“I’m happy for this opportunity to fight Ferguson; I’m taking this fight on less than 20 days notice, but it’s a chance to display my talent and show I’m ready to fight any Top 5 ranked guy, like I’ve been saying for a while now,” Oliveira told UFC.com. “The time has come. I will shock the world on December 12th.”
As for the matchup itself, it’s a highly-intriguing one given that both fighters are similar in their striking and expertise when it comes to grappling.
Oliveira is simply expecting what many in the combat sports world are — a full-out war.
“I’m expecting this fight to be a war, because we’re both good on the feet and on the ground,” Oliveira explained. “We both like to fight, we both move forward. Fans can be sure this is going to be a war, but they can also be sure that when it’s done, my arm will be raised.
“It’s my moment. I respect Ferguson in every way – he’s tough, a fantastic guy – but now it’s my time.”
UFC 256 will be headlined by a flyweight title fight between Deiveson Figueiredo and Brandon Moreno.
