Bisping TUF 9The Ultimate Fighting Championship promotion officially announced Michael ‘The Count’ Bisping (21-3) and Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller (24-7) as the coaches for season 14 of The Ultimate Fighter.

Filming begins next month in Las Vegas as the two middleweights attempt to coach the next crop of Ultimate Fighter hopefuls to the Finale to crown a new “TUF” winner. This season is rumored to feature bantamweight and featherweight fighters.

Miller had been originally been scheduled to face Aaron Simpson at UFC 132 but that match has been cancelled. Promotion officials noted that they are currently searching for a new opponent to face Simpson at the event. I’d expect an announcement to come within the week naming a new opponent.

The two 185-pound contenders have proven they can fight at the elite level of the sport as well.

But can they coach?

Bisping answered that question as he led two of his fighters to victory on season nine of The Ultimate Fighter. Now it’s Miller’s turn to prove himself against the brash Brit when they collide as coaches on season 14 of The Ultimate Fighter, which begins filming next month in Las Vegas.

Manchester’s Bisping, winner of season three of TUF, is currently riding a three fight winning streak that includes victories over Dan Miller, Yoshihiro Akiyama, and Jorge Rivera.

California’s Miller is back in the UFC after a six year absence where he fought the likes of Jake Shields, Robbie Lawler, Tim Kennedy, and “Jacare” Souza, while also gaining worldwide fame for his stint as host of MTV’s “Bully Beatdown.” In his most recent bout, in September of 2010, he submitted Japanese legend Kazushi Sakuraba, and now he has his sights on Bisping both in the gym and in the Octagon.

Jason Mayhem MillerNews broke on Friday that UFC President Dana White had made his selections for the upcoming fourteenth season of “The Ultimate Fighter”, naming two middleweights to the coaching positions on the Spike television reality series.

Former “TUF 9″ coach, Michael ‘The Count’ Bisping (21-3), and “Bully Beatdown” host, Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller (24-7) who recently resigned with the UFC, will act as coaches for the next season. “TUF 14″ is expected to feature bantamweight and featherweight fighters, the first time the series has featured fighters from those weight classes.

White broke the news exclusively to MixedMartialArts.com today, and has since been confirmed by several other web media outlets.

Former No. 1 middleweight contender Chael Sonnen was thought to take the other coaching role opposite Bisping, but after the California State Athletic Commission voted to uphold his licensing suspension, Sonnen was unable to participate on the Spike series.

Miller is currently scheduled to meet Aaron Simpson in July at UFC 132 as part of his return to the promotion, but that bout is expected to be cancelled with today’s news.

Report: TUF Coaching Gig Hinging On UFC 130 Fight With Jorge Santiago for Brian Stann

(Stann’s weekend just got a whole lot more interesting.)

According to a report by Dave Meltzer from his F4WOnline.com insider newsletter, there’s more than just a win bonus at stake for former WEC light heavyweight champion Brian Stann when he squares off against former Sengoku middleweight champion Jorge Santiago. He’ll earn a TUF coaching gig opposite Michael Bisping if he has his hand raised Saturday night.

Since Chael Sonnen was knocked out of contention for the coaching slot when he was placed under an indefinite suspension by the California State Athletic Commission, the UFC’s back-up plan is to have Bisping and Stann as opposing coaches. Meltzer didn’t say whether it would be another “Team USA vs. Team UK” show, but it’s a good possibility considering Stann’s status as an All-American hero and Bisping’s as a cocky, spit-slinging Brit.

The question is, since the winner of a planned December Sonnen-Bisping bout was to get the next shot at Anderson Silva, does this mean that Bisping or Stann could get a title shot in the near future?

Now the UFC is jumping the shark.

Fitch hasn’t earned another title shot, so bring in Diaz who hasn’t fought in the UFC in years and give him one. And hey, while you’re at it, Joe Silva, Brian Stann and Michael Bisping haven’t had a shot yet. Why don’t you let them fight for one. Forget rankings and stupid details like that.

UFC Looking To Book Chael Sonnen & Michael Bisping As TUF 14 Coaches

UFC middleweights Chael Sonnen (25-11-1) and Michael “The Count” Bisping (21-3) are being tentatively slotted into the positions, and will square off after the series is done in a #1 contenders bout.

The rumor was reported by Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer (subscription required).

Of course the biggest obstacle right now is Sonnen’s ability to obtain a license in Nevada, following his recent suspension and current legal troubles. Meltzer covers this point in his article, noting that if the Nevada State Athletic Commission does award him a license, it will be “heavily criticized.”

The plan from Spike TV and UFC for the next season of Ultimate Fighter, which would air September through December, is to have Chael Sonnen and Michael Bisping as coaches to build to a PPV match in December. The winner would likely be in line for the first middleweight title match of 2012.

Bisping and Sonnen have already started publicly trash talking. Neither UFC nor Spike can publicly announce this due to Sonnen not being licensed in Nevada. Keith Kizer, Executive Director of the commission has said he would not rubber stamp Sonnen’s license due to his contention that Sonnen lied in his California State Athletic Commission hearing in December when he claimed he and Kizer had spoken and that Kizer had approved his testosterone use exemption for Nevada due to a claimed medical condition.

The decision, rumored for weeks, is controversial and will likely be heavily criticized if it does happen. Some will say Bisping and Sonnen are being rewarded at a time when both should not be rewarded. On the flip side, the belief is that the two, because of their strong personalities and interviews, can create another dynamic similar to Rashad Evans and Quinton Jackson, or Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz, which resulted in not only the two highest rated seasons in the history of the show, but also huge PPV numbers in each case.

What this ultimately looks to come down to is how commission members will vote on Sonnen, or if UFC wants to risk Sonnen going before the commission given Kizer’s assertion, that all evidence is true, that Sonnen lied, using his name, to get his California suspension for failing a steroid test reduced … This could go a lot of different ways. If the feeling is Sonnen won’t get the votes to get a license, rather than him apply and be turned down, I would think they will change plans.

TUF 13 coachesThe season premier for season thirteen of “The Ultimate Fighter” aired Wednesday night on Spike TV featuring coaches Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos. This seasons cast features a group of 14 welterweight fighters battling out for the “TUF” contract.

Last nights season opener pulled in an average audience of 1.5 million viewers, which was slightly lower than the number of viewers who tuned in for last seasons premier with 1.6 million viewers. Season 12 of “TUF” featured UFC champ Georges St-Pierre and Josh Koscheck, averaging 1.7 million viewers per episode.

This years show began at 9PM EST instead of the traditional 10PM EST on Spike TV.

The opening episode saw Team Dos Santos score the first victory after Shamar Bailey’s two round unanimous victory over Team Lesnar fighter Nordin Asrih.

It will be interesting to see what the ratings will look like for future episodes with coaches Lesnar and Dos Santos taking a gentler, kinder attitude towards one another, unlike last seasons series.
