Perhaps the most anticipated match on the UFC 205 fight card, besides the main event itself, is the showdown between welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and striking phenom Stephen Thompson. Both men are incredibly skilled with a number different methods of winning this fight. The style clash alone is worth the price of admission and it’s a fight that’s sure to be filled with a ton of strategy. Can Woodley impose his will on Thompson or will the karate expert utilize his slick striking to get the job done? Well, let’s dive in and look at the roads to victory for each man.

After seizing the welterweight title in emphatic fashion against former champ Robbie Lawler, Tyron Woodley hasn’t exactly been given a warm reception. Whether that was due to the fact that Lawler was like the people’s champion or some of the comments made after his victory, Woodley is a man who deserves respect. His fight with Thompson is the first step to winning the fans over. In order to do that he’ll have to abandon an all out striking match. As of late Woodley has opted to contend most of his matches on the feet. While resorting to the heavy wrestling game he used in the past could seem a bit predictable, no one would argue about who the better wrestler is. Woodley has devastating striking to say the least but when his set ups and strikes aren’t landing he tends to go into a bit of a shell and only then resorts to wrestling. Rather than the calm explosive game that he’s used to, Woodley would be far better off getting right into Thompson’s face, punished the lead leg with kicks and always remain in a range where single and double leg takedowns are within reach. He’ll have to stalk Thompson and constantly threaten with quick strikes, feints, and level changes in order to corner the challenger.

Stephen Thompson should employ a game similar to that of his teammate Chris Weidman who faces a very similar opponent at UFC 205. Thompson should be judicious with his kicking game to begin with, utilizing his long jab in the outset. With the height advantage, Thompson can actually keep the champion on the end of his jab and utilize his counters and angle changes as needed. The cage could play both friend and foe to Thompson in this matchup. If Woodley decides to make this a grinding, grueling kind of match, a real possibility and smart game plan, Thompson could find himself up against the cage fending off takedowns and clinch strikes all night. Thompson could also use the fence to get back to his feet, but it’s better off that he remains in space and in the center of the cage. Thompson is going to want to apply pressure at range during this fight. Thompson has always been adept at throwing off his opponents rhythm with strikes made to irritate more than cause serious damage. If the champ decides to explode forward it’s a matter of Thompson conceding space and immediately moving back in to land a crushing counter. Keeping Woodley busy is key to winning this bout. If Thompson gives the champ time to think you can bet that Woodley will uncork a powerful right hand. Countering is Thompson’s bread and butter but it’s better for the challenger to provoke his prey, get him moving forward, then lunge in like a cobra.

There are so many ways this fight could play out. It’s in Woodley’s best interest to make this a slow and grinding kind of fight. Thompson will need to be in constant motion to better control range and stuff takedowns. Look for the challenger to use his striking acumen to keep Woodley guessing before landing fight ending punches in a thrilling match up. Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson by second round TKO.

The most stacked card in history is here.

Blowing previous mega-cards UFC 200 and UFC 202 out of the water in terms of potential excitement, high-level competition, big names, and high stakes, UFC 205 will be the promotion’s inaugural foray into New York City. The blockbuster event will emanate Saturday November 12, 2016, from Madison Square Garden in New York, NY.

The headliner will see the biggest draw in the sport today, Conor McGregor, seeking to make history. The current undisputed featherweight champion, the ‘Notorious’ one will attempt to dethrone current lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez. If he is successful, he will become the first simultaneous two-division title-holder in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The hard-nosed Alvarez will be making his first defense of the title in the money fight of his choosing. He last appeared in July, when he ripped the belt from Rafael dos Anjos.

The main card also features two other title fights. First, Joanna J?drzejczyk will look to defend her title for a fourth time when she goes toe to toe with fellow Polish striker Karolina Kowalkiewicz. Then welterweight champ Tyron ‘The Chosen One’ Woodley will square off with consensus number one contender Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson.

The rest of the main draw will see New York native Chris Weidman lock horns with Cuban wrestling dynamo Yoel Romero and former bantamweight champion Miesha Tate warring with Raquel Pennington.

Read on for a breakdown of every scrap on the main card.

Two massive title bouts will close out the historic UFC 205 pay-per-view (PPV) card tomorrow night (Saturday November 12, 2016), as UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor will attempt to win a second title when he takes on Eddie Alvarez for the 155-pound throne in the night’s main event; while Tyron Woodley will defend his title against perennial contender Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson in the co-featured bout of the evening.

Earlier today (Friday November 11, 2016) both Woodley and McGregor weighed in for their respective contests in New York City this morning, to where the two champions engaged in a rather interesting stare-down with one another:

Shortly after this Woodley took to Twitter to comment on the altercation, to which ‘The Chosen One’ stated he wasn’t phased on bit by the Irishman’s presence. This would erupt into a brief exchange between the two champs, in which McGregor would repeatedly call Woodley a ‘bitch’:

McGregor is no stranger to the 170-pound division, as he embarked on a two-fight feud with Nate Diaz in the UFC’s welterweight division, where ‘Notorious’ currently holds a record of 1-1. In his initial meeting with Diaz in the main event of UFC 196 last March, McGregor was choked out in the second round via rear-naked choke after being rocked by the former Ultimate Fighter winner on the feet.

Five months later the pair would rematch in one of the biggest fights in UFC history, to which McGregor would see his hand raised in a majority decision after a 25-minute blood bath of a war.

McGregor has expressed interest in going after the UFC’s 170-pound title before, but for the time being that strap currently rests around the waist of Woodley who has looked rather frightening as of late. If McGregor and Woodley should find themselves throwing down with one another inside the Octagon in the near future, it should be an interesting contest to say the least.

UFC 205 Weigh-in Results: Champions on Weight, Gastelum-Cerrone Cancelled

The hopes that the UFC 205 weigh-ins would go off without a hitch were quickly blown away on Friday morning.

Luckily for fight fans, all three title fights are official.

Conor McGregor (154.4) and Eddie Alvarez (154.6) checked in on weight for their history-making contest. And leave it to McGregor to add a bit of flavor to the proceedings, as he had a tense moment with current welterweight champion Tyron Woodley.

According to MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani, Woodley gave McGregor a nod as they waited to weigh in, and the Irishman had a stare down with the champ.

Perhaps a sign of things to come?

The drama of the weigh-ins started early.

Thiago Alves was one of the first fighters to hit the scale for his lightweight debut, but the American Top Team member checked in at 162.6 pounds. Jim Miller, his opponent, was on weight but had to gain a couple pounds to be within five pounds of Alves. Miller weighed in at 157.6 pounds.

Alves cannot weight more than 173 pounds before stepping into the Octagon tomorrow night, per Fox Sports’ Damon Martin.

UFC 205 did lose the highly anticipated meeting between Donald Cerrone and Kelvin Gastelum.

Gastelum did not even weigh in, as he knew he would miss weight. The fight was called off, and the main card will go on with five fights.

This marks the third time in Gastelum’s UFC career that he has missed the welterweight limit. After his second time, against Tyron Woodley, he made a move to middleweight. Not even stepping on the scale in New York City is a bad omen for his welterweight lifespan.

All other UFC 205 participants made weight.

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza made an appearance and weighed-in at 189 pounds, even though he is not on the fight card.

UFC 205 will go forward with 11 fights, down from 13 to start the week. History is still on the docket in the main event, and the five-fight main card still remains one of the most intriguing in UFC history.

The ceremonial weigh-in show takes place Friday at 6 p.m. ET. Bleacher Report will also have coverage as the staredowns should be quite entertaining.

Coverage of UFC 205 will begin Saturday with the UFC Fight Pass prelims at 7 p.m. ET.

The UFC touches down in New York for the first time on Saturday with one of the best lineups in its long history at UFC 205.

Madison Square Garden will play host to three title fights, including the biggest draw in the history of the sport. In the main event, featherweight Conor McGregor takes on lightweight kingpin Eddie Alvarez in the first meeting of two current champions since Georges St-Pierre and BJ Penn met at UFC 94 in 2009.

This champion vs. champion matchup is a momentous occasion and one of the best pure matchups that can be made in the entire sport.

The rest of the card doesn’t disappoint. Tyron Woodley defends his newly won welterweight crown against Stephen Thompson in a crackling co-main event, while rising star Joanna Jedrzejczyk puts her strawweight belt on the line against Karolina Kowalkiewicz in an all-Polish title matchup at 115 pounds.

Three more outstanding fights round out the best main card in UFC history.

Former middleweight champion Chris Weidman returns to action for the first time since losing his belt, going against Cuban Olympian Yoel Romero and his seven-fight winning streak. The surging Donald Cerrone takes on Kelvin Gastelum in an outstanding welterweight bout, and former women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate draws Raquel Pennington in the opener.

Even the preliminary card is full of talent. Former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar draws Jeremy Stephens in the Fox Sports 1 headliner, while an outstanding lightweight fight featuring Khabib Nurmagomedov and Michael Johnson deepens the offering.

Let’s take a look at each individual matchup.

Tyron Woodley knows all about the history of Madison Square Garden.

That’s why he is so excited to get to showcase his skills and defend his welterweight title Saturday night at UFC 205 vs. Stephen Thompson.

“They didn’t tell me they were going to walk me in front of the Joe Frazier – Muhammad Ali billboard and for me to fight at the same arena as Muhammad Ali, ‘Wonderboy’ better be ready to die because he’s going to get these hands,” Woodley said during an interview on UFC Tonight.

Woodley won the belt with a thrilling first round knockout of Robbie Lawler earlier this year. And why he didn’t get Nick Diaz or Georges St-Pierre as requested, he knows Thompson is a threat not to take lightly.

“I’m going to be a complete mixed martial artists. I can wrestle, I can grapple, and I have knockout power,” he said. “I’m good at not letting anyone make good at me.”
