After a somewhat controversial decision victory over Carlos Condit in a back and forth war for the ages at last January’s UFC 195, the future was unclear for reigning welterweight champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler.

The 170 pound weight class is currently booming with contenders, making the Lawler’s next challenge a tough decision to make for the UFC.

An instant rematch with Condit seemed to be a strong possibility, as well as a bout with the rising Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, who recently dismantled former champion Johny Hendricks.

Veteran Demian Maia has been on a roll as of late, and Tyron Woodley has been waiting for a title shot for what seems like forever now.

And of course, there’s always the possibility of a potential return to action for former long-time divisional kingpin Georges St. Pierre.

After months of speculation, however, it appears as if the promotion is closing in on a decision, as UFC President Dana White recently spoke on Lawler’s future (Via MMAFighting):

“He’s terrorizing me for UFC 200 like every fighter is right now,” White said, “but Robbie is going to fight at either 201 or 202.”

“I don’t know who yet,” White said of Lawler’s opponent, “but more than likely going to be [Tyron] Woodley.”

Woodley, a man undoubtedly deserving of a title shot, is currently ranked No. 3 in the divisional rankings. “The Chosen One” has won four out of his last five bouts, and is coming off of back to back victories over Dong Hyun Kim and Kelvin Gastelum.

Woodley was supposed to face off with Hendricks last October, but “Bigg Rigg” was forced out of the fight on weigh in day.

Prior to his clash with Condit, Lawler had picked up four wins in a row, including a title defense over Rory MacDonald in one of the best fights of 2015.

Who would you pick to come out on top in a potential fight between Lawler and Woodley?

UFC president Dana White sat front-and-center for a thrilling night of finishes Friday at Resurrection Fighting Alliance 37.

White appeared on the program, which aired live on AXS TV, and commented on when we might see Robbie Lawler – who was also in attendance – back in action to defend his welterweight title and who might challenge him.

“It’s more than likely going to be (Tyron) Woodley,” White said, adding that UFC 201 or 202 would be the event for the fight.

Lawler (27-10) has scored back-to-back title defenes vs. Carlos Condit and Rory MacDonald since winning the belt over Johny Hendricks in 2014. He is on a five-fight win streak overall.

Woodley (15-3) is 4-1 over his last five, with the lone defeat coming to MacDonald. He has not fought since January 2015, though, as a planned title-eliminator with Hendricks was scrapped after the former champion missed weight.

Recently, Stephen Thompson declared himself for that role, citing his believe that he is a “more exciting” fighter than Woodley.

The former NCAA wrestling standout took exception, offering up what he described as “Reminder Monday” on Twitter recently:

Woodley (15-3) has won two in a row and four of his last five, losing only to former title contender Rory MacDonald since 2013. He picked up a split decision over Kelvin Gastelum last year, losing his shot at Johny Hendricks – who Thompson finished in the first round – when the former UFC champion suffered issues cutting weight.

Skyrocketing UFC welterweight Stephen Thompson shocked possibly the UFC’s most talented division when he knocked out former champion Johny Hendricks in the first round of UFC Fight Night 82 last night from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Coming into the fight at No. 8, Thompson exhibited world-class striking range that simply had “Bigg Rigg” neutralized in the Octagon after an early first round takedown attempt. The much shorter Hendricks ever got his once-vaunted power punching going, and instead ate a monstrously precise straight left that opened up the floodgates for one of Thompson’s trademark spinning kicks, after which a flurry of punches caused a surprisingly quick stoppage to the fight.

‘Wonderboy’ called out for a title shot versus Robbie Lawler following his biggest MMA win, and after he handled the former champ with such ease, and it might be tough to deny him at this point. However, there are a slew of top contenders like Rory MacDonald, Tyron Woodley, and Carlos Condit ranked ahead of him, and all of them would certainly make for exciting match-ups that could decide the next title challenger. He could also face the winner of May’s Demian Maia vs. Matt Brown, bout which would be a rematch of his only UFC loss if Brown were to win.

No matter what direction the UFC takes with their flashy star in the making, the future is bright for ‘Wonderboy’ and his next fight will be a pivotal one. Whom do you think he should meet in the Octagon?

No. 8-ranked welterweight contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson went into last night’s (February 6, 2016) UFC Fight Night 82 from Las Vegas with a chip on his shoulder.

Facing off with No. 2-ranked former champion Johny “Bigg Rigg” Hendricks in the night’s main event, Thompson had something to prove, and he did just that.

In unexpected fashion, Thompson came out firing, using his elite level striking to bulldoze through Hendricks, scoring a first round finish and a huge upset over a perennial title contender.

Having taken out one of the division’s best, “Wonderboy” has undoubtedly skyrocketed himself towards the top of the rankings, and should be in line for a huge fight next.

Let’s take a look at four possible options for Thompson:

(What an absolutely shocking development. There is literally no way we could have seen this coming.)

We’re just a few minutes out from the UFC 192 weigh-ins, and we’ve already seen our first casualty.

Yes, it appears that the weight-cutting woes of former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks have taken a far more serious turn, as “Bigg Rigg” was forced out of his co-main event title eliminator against Tyron Woodley earlier today after being hospitalized during the weight cutting process.

Details after the jump.

Hendricks, who parted ways with nutritionist Mike Dolce earlier this year, was rushed to the emergency room last night and had to be given an IV after suffering a blockage in his intestine and a kidney stone.

“The weight was coming off fine and then yesterday my body just started to shut down,” Hendricks said in an interview with MMAFighting. “Then yesterday my body just started to shut down. When it hit that point, I tried to push through it, and well, it didn’t go well because then I had to go to the ER.”

The news was first broke by Dana White via Twitter and later confirmed by Ariel Helwani.

Hendrick’s opponent is understandably perturbed by the news.

I’m frustrated, obviously. I’m always trying to look for the lesson in things and positive signs. I believe things happen for a reason. I’m counting this as a loss for him. You got to make the weight. I’m sitting here at weight, wired, ready to wage war and now I’m not going to get that opportunity.

Hopefully, I’m compensated accordingly because this shouldn’t be a strike against me.

And as it just so happens, Woodley will be *heavily* compensated in the form of a title shot against the winner of Robbie Lawler vs. Carlos Condit at UFC 193. The flyweight fight between top contenders Ali Bagautinov and Joseph Benavidez will also be bumped up to the UFC 192 main card as a result of the Hendricks-Woodley cancellation.

As for Hendricks? Well, you’ve gotta assume that a temporary move up to 185 is in his future, ala Kelvin Gastelum. And it looks like Hendricks might actually be in agreement.

“I think I have to lose more fat or move up,” he said. “We might move up to 185, but I want to get home and start testing myself on body fat and try to work it down and see if that’s going to work in a mini weight cut. Then that’s when I can really focus on what’s next. If it doesn’t go go good, then it’s 185 for sure. I still enjoy fighting, just not the weight cut.”
